Is it just me or does anyone else have really no clue what this is all about?3 points

Should payware planes have demo modes? I saw this on X-Plane.org and wanted to know what you guys think. The planes could have a serial code system. I think the Boeing 777 has this along with others. If you don't have a serial code you might be locked into say a 10 minute demo mode. In the demo mode after 10 minutes you can't fly anymore. The plane would also start up with the engine running so we can fly it around for 10 minutes to try out the plane and not spend 10 minutes finding out how to turn it on. I think you could get a lot more buyers this way.2 points

Great topic! I must have spent an HOUR on Sunday night reading other forums and posts about just this very topic, and I have something for you on this I would like to share - as it makes my mind up 100% It's quite simple actually. Buy a single GTX680 4096GB. Why? XP10 is going to go 64bit "soonish" - sliders to the right time! (Sort of!) What you'll be limited by a lot of the time will be VRAM, so given there will be "no limit" on the X-Plane application's use of RAM means that you'll want to take as much advantage of available VRAM as possible - so that you get more "stuff" on screen. So, this means that a 4096 vs a 2048 will be better yes? Fairly obvious. OK, so why a 680 over a 690? There is a quietish marketing secret about the VRAM on the 690 that is not disclosed. As you already know, it is two GPUs on one card, two cards in SLI on one physical card if you take my meaning. BUT: In order for the SLI-bit to work each GPU has to have it's own local "copy" of the VRAM - which means that each GPU consumes 2048Mb each just for the SLI-bit. This leaves 2048 useable VRAM for the applications, in this case X-Plane. Which means you only get 2048Mb of VRAM to play with. Secondly, X-Plane doesn't support SLI yet, so there is no point getting more than one card - so a single GTX680 4096 it is then! Finally, in terms of performance, if using a GTX680 is like slicing through a log first time with an axe, then a GTX690 is simply going "too hard" and shattering the axe head and then your wrist as a result. What do I mean? TOO much power we ain't gonna use. Not yet. Give me more VRAM today so that I can fill the screen with lovely things. As long as I get 30-50fps I will be as happy as a pig in sh1t. I don't need 120fps, or epilepsy for that matter. I hope that helps - sorry the sarcastic tone, it was not meant that way, more to be playful as I am happy *grins* to post about something I spent quite some time doing some research on and came to happy conclusion - plus I get to save about £250 on the potential purchase of an under-utilised 690!! Cheers James2 points

here is my second project currently i have only modeled the engine part of the wing and a very ruff fuselage obviously the engine cowling needs some work and but at least i have started work anyways here a photo of the engine also i know there are 4 propeller mounts when there are only 3 propellers per engine on a c-46 this is due to where the engine interior came from (it's the interior of the b-29's since they are almost identical)1 point

Some interior cockpit shots of the Saab 340! We'll write up a systems update again soon to help you learn what everything in this cockpit is about, but for now enjoy some more screenshots to ease the pain of waiting! As always, these are work in progress previews.1 point

Well, I just cut the rope and kept on moving, too. I also just got banned from the so-called "org" - more like the Borg. Unless you are willing to drink their coolaid all the time, that in and of itself is enough to get you banned. And, don't even think about asking intelligent questions about X-Plane, or make any intelligent (patently obvious) critiques of X-Plane on the Borg Collective Forum, as that will get you nothing but a collective "Go fly the demo to get your questions answered," or it will immediately get you labeled a "troll" by a pretend Cop wearing a "Moderators" uniform with the crack of his butt showing each time he sits down at his computer. I posted some very direct questions about the "Application Architecture" of X-Plane, and was rudely interrupted by the very same Trollish Attitude that I got labeled with, merely for asking intelligent questions. For the Moderator and his Borg-like Minions to behave that way, was just flat out stupid. What's the point? What's the point of even having a forum with the name X-Plane.org. What - did they really think that having a name like that and allowing public registrations for membership would lead to no one asking questions based on their observations of X-Plane? How absurd a notion is that. The Moderator temporarily suspended my account - merely because I levied the truth on their forum about how I was displeased with the difference between what the official X-Plane Sales Video shows -vs- what you actually get out of the box when you install the product. You don't get the nice looking scenery, high resolution ground level detail, precise surface topology with respect to major landmarks, etc., with X-Plane 10 Global. My X-Plane 10 Global, looked absolutely nothing like the video and all I did was echo what I've seen others say before about their Out-The-Box experience with X-Plane Global and the apparent discrepancy between the polished video -vs- what ultimately gets installed on their HDD. The level of rudeness, arrogance and total blindness on that site is beyond my ability to cope. I wrote back to the Traffic Cop (moderator) and told him to not just temporarily suspend my account - but DELETE my account entirely, as I had absolutely zero need for such an arrogant environment. I also made it abundantly clear that I LIKED X-Plane, even more than I liked FSX. So, I'm not some FSX Vendor Water Boy. I went there to learn - but apparently, you can't learn a damn thing inside the Borg Collective, unless you agree with every hallucination they can fathom. It was an unreal experience to say the least. The arrogance on that forum is palpable. I suspect this forum is a whole lot different? I've also seen a number of other forums with a lot more traffic, a lot more learning going on and a lot less ego to throw around. What is it with arrogance on forums anyway? Why do people lose their social skills when they enter a forum? Why bring that kind of obnoxious anti-social attitude into a forum, when you know darn well you won't have that same arrogant attitude standing directly in front of someone? What you see, is what you get with me. I'm polite and courteous in-person and I'm the same way online. I don't attempt to over compensate for some kind of weakness, merely because I go online. Yet, I see this time and time again on forums. What's the deal? Weren't these people reared by parents who taught them at a young age, how to conduct themselves in public places and how to remain consistent in demeanor, whether in public or private? I was taught that by my parents. I'm so sick of all the online idiocy and Group Think Mentality. Drink the coolaid so you can get along with the "Borg," or you will be classified as a Troll. And, we ban Trolls. We don't ban ourselves for acting just like trolls, but we do ban others who we say are acting like trolls. In other words, we are total HYPOCRITES and we like it that way (with a stupid grin on the face, no doubt). Oh, man! I am SO sick of that online attitude! When does it stop? When do people stop acting like this online? When do we get down to some intelligent discussion, rational debate, healthy challenges and some actual learning without all the Borg'ishness behavior? Why can't these be real places of learning, sharing, cultivating, knowledge transfer, understanding, development and growth? What - am I asking for too much for people to be civil with each other? PLEASE tell me that this forum is different in its approach and its overall attitude? I brought my own beverages, thank you very much. I don't drink coolaid, but I am willing to share what I do have. I've got some chips and salsa, too. I can't cook very well, but I can roast the heck out of a chicken (lol!). I'm also getting better making Lasagna, and once upon a time, I made a stir fry dish with 100% fresh ingredients and it was just as good, if not better than anything I've ever experienced in a nice restaurant. Thus, I have developed a whole new level of respect for Professional Chefs - how they get it perfect every single time, I will never know. But, I have to watch what I eat, or my blood sugar levels will get out of whack - don't want that to happen. Like I said, what you see is what you get. Now, I was saying something about X-Plane....1 point

I have to agree with Cameron I'm afraid. A "demo" in a lot of cases once compromised can be then compromised globally for anyone looking for the.... compromise. Look at JailBreaks for iOS devices to give a "modern" analogy. And generally speaking it's not possible to release "half a product" for demos, it's either feature complete or it's not. Unless the longevity of a product revolves how many "levels" it's got you can't really release the "gameplay" and then expect people to pay full price. Demos have their place certainly, but its based on a strategy, which is in turn based on economies of scale unfortunately. For me, the best 3D viewer out there is........................... YouTube. If you're not sure, wait for someone else to buy it, someone else to love it, someone else to upload a cool 1080P HD video with 120fps and TrackIR integration with a really cool soundtrack that makes your leg twitch for the wallet - THEN its buying time!!! Or if you can't wait, do you research, take a punt and buy it. Something not paid for has no value. If you've paid for something you're much more likely to look after it, or try to learn how to use it. Trust me. I used to be a teenager that at one point thought it was possible to download the entire world and read every web page. (What can I say, I was keen!) Another favorite quote of mine, used it this morning while speaking with my wife who wanted to buy some more Tupperware: "Don't buy just any shit - buy cheap, buy twice." Just my thoughts. Demos have their place. But not all the time. Last year I tried the XP10 demo for 10 mins and binned it - to go to MS Flight. Wow. The 10 mins wasn't "enough" if you can believe that. In the end I bought the damned thing and got involved. Cheers James1 point

I'll bug some people I know to toss that in as a feature request. As I said, in theory it should be possible to do.... Assuming the runway rendering code path is the same for other draped poly's.1 point

Enjoying the area north of San Francisco, looking down on the far north end of Lake Barryessa, just east of the famous Napa Valley wineries. This flight is heading west toward the Napa Valley and the city of Santa Rosa - beautiful day to take some friends up for some VFR site-seeing!1 point

Tough call. You also open yourself up (as a distributor and developer) to people trying to crack and pirate your product doing this without any chance or really figuring the culprit. Sad, but true. We've gone back and forth on this internally for a long time. Maybe one day it will happen, but not now.1 point

no more big systems; however, we do still have some work to do on the vnav. I'd describe it more as that point when say...building a bridge from opposite sides you have to meet in the middle and get it all connected. The bulk of the mass is there...we just kind of slow down, hook it all up and make sure it's right. The lnav tracking is working great....you can hit lnav right off the deck and it will fly you to your destination, following the route beautifully. There are a few small systems laying around, but nothing like all the big pieces we have already done. We are setting aside vnav for the moment to focus on the 3D. Texture the engines, animate the main gear, build rear of cocpkpit and then cabin and texture it all up. After that, we will start tying it all together and hitting the final stretch. I don't think you will have problem at all with your card. I am running an i3 with 512 video card and I get about 30fps, BUT I don't run with much scenery either. If I crank it all up, things get slow. I've run it on Cameron's machine...an imac with 2gb video card and i7 processor and you can just turn everything up and it runs great. Anything new should be fine I'd think...my video card is over 2 years old. When we get everything working, I think we'll probably do a complete flight video...perhaps time-lapsed to speed things up, but we would like to demonstrate a cold and dark startup and flight...at least through takeoff and maybe part of a SID. Yes Remlap is correct, and also a tiny bit too early in thinking you will succeed when you haven't completed your first plane. So go back to your workshop1 point

0 out of 10 for doing it and hurting 3rd party x-plane developers in the process. Just what this community needs - another reason for developers to flee.1 point

Some VATSIM traffic shots as I was departing LOWW this morning: Ground movements: Holding short RWY 34 for an inbound heavy: His paint looks a little nicer than my (lack of) paint: I wonder if he's on X-Plane as well, or if the runways in MSFS scenery line up that well with the ones in X-Plane: And I'm ready to line-up and take-off: It was a busy morning in Vienna!1 point

No worries at all. You're still looking around, I get that. My first week of X-Plane, having been "loyal" to FSX/P3D for years was full of: "Doh! How do I do this *simple* thing when it should be right in front of... Oh there it is, OK then." Still finding my way around a little, but the learning curve does start to drop off with some time and patience. Sufficed to say, I have more fun/time *doing* things in XP than previously. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to be in "one camp" or another until the end of time, I like to keep an open mind - but at present the "switch" I made to XP has got a firm hold. Good luck with the rest of your evaluation. Cheers James1 point
