Paraffin Posted April 3, 2012 Report Posted April 3, 2012 This is a wonderful model. If you haven't read "Fate is the Hunter" by Ernest K. Gann, then buy it and read it now! It's about the early days of civilian and military aviation, and a good portion of the book is about flying the DC-3.I only had one ride in a real DC-3, and it was a long time ago in Venezuela, on the run out to Angel Falls/Canaima. I'll never forget that.
hobofat Posted April 3, 2012 Report Posted April 3, 2012 Congratulations!Plane is bought and installed, can't wait to find the time to take it for a spin. I wanted to mention how happy I am that you saw this project through. My greatest enjoyment in flight sim has come from learning about and simulating classic propliners. X-Plane doesn't have nearly as many high-quality options in this regard, but now we have one of the best!Really, really, really looking forward to spending some time with this one!
C47 Posted April 5, 2012 Report Posted April 5, 2012 Congrats,This is a piece of art, really stunning.
CheAG_Slava Posted April 6, 2012 Report Posted April 6, 2012 Hi! first thx for an acfI have a little problem with painting livirie of Aeroflot CCCP-1015as you can see on next pain scheme there is number 1015 on left wingand I guess that part of number CCCP on right wingBut recent mapping do not allow do that because there is mirror map coords for both wingsI think there are more liviries in the world with such number placing. Please sorry for my english.
Goran_M Posted April 6, 2012 Author Report Posted April 6, 2012 I'll get Theo to look into this and see what we can come up with in the next day or 2.If we see 4096 x 4096 textures in the next major X Plane update (as has been announced), then we'll make a new texture for the wings and fit both of them on one 4096 texture map.
CheAG_Slava Posted April 6, 2012 Report Posted April 6, 2012 (edited) IMHO: Maybe you should try trick like you did with mapping of Fuselage. mirrored texture. for another wingAnd you do not need to remap coords for 3D. so there will be one more same texture and same liviries will work property.UPD Just delete right wing and create one more mirrored obj with same mapping for that wingsorry my eng is ill and difficult to say what i really mean:) Edited April 6, 2012 by CheAG_Slava
MaidenFan Posted April 7, 2012 Report Posted April 7, 2012 Hi! first thx for an acfI have a little problem with painting livirie of Aeroflot CCCP-1015as you can see on next pain scheme there is number 1015 on left wingand I guess that part of number CCCP on right wingBut recent mapping do not allow do that because there is mirror map coords for both wingsI think there are more liviries in the world with such number placing. Please sorry for my english. That's an awesome livery!
joga Posted April 8, 2012 Report Posted April 8, 2012 Due to the release of Keflavik, i'm spending currently more time in XP10 and i have noticed that the DC-3 flight-model behaves slightly different from XP9 (which feels really good to me).Example:2000ft (no winds), props@22.5, map@30, pitch trim@4 gives me a perfectly trimmed level flight @140knots (which seems very very realistic)While in XP10 same settings gives me only about @115knots with alway a tendency to climb further (even with trim@8!)Any idea about this? XP10 fault/beta state, or needs the dc-3 v10 flight-model more tweaking?cheers and happy easter, jops: if helpful, i can send you the corresponding screenshots. both sims are up to date, default payloads, X52 full linear @0%, stability @25%
Goran_M Posted April 8, 2012 Author Report Posted April 8, 2012 Some differences in XP10 are to be expected because of some of the extra's. I've already made a few changes to the XP10 flight model for the next update that should change a few of the flight characteristics. After I run a few more tests and consider it "final", it'll be added to the store (which shouldn't be much longer). Happy Easter!
joga Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 Thanks for looking into it Goran!I just want to add, it looks like there is also a trimming problem with other planes using XP10 (i.e. the F33A almost needs tripple as much aileron-trim than in XP9). Maybe some change in the trimming resolution, which is not compatible to XP9?Still a long way to go with XP10, but i'm really glad to hear that at least the DC-3 will be tweaked and fine-tuned to perform correctly!
CheAG_Slava Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 Hi! one more question. Cant find rear doors. They do not exist on paintkit (front doors too) and when i opened it on AC3D i didnt found it at allIs it some special convension of DC-3 modelled ?On my livery i painted Fake Cargo and passenger door. But im to lazy to paint frnt door on right place.
Goran_M Posted April 9, 2012 Author Report Posted April 9, 2012 There are no rear doors. There is only a front door. The front door is behind the cockpit on the left side.
Cameron Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 How are we supposed to get out then? Traditionally through air stairs hooked up to the front doors.
Ntr09 Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 Traditionally through air stairs hooked up to the front doors. Yes, true but most DC-3s have rear doors for boarding without air stairs.-NR
Cameron Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 Yes, true but most DC-3s have rear doors for boarding without air stairs.-NRBut those that do have them are not the same variant as this one. So regardless of whatever some others may have, this one does not. 1
Phantom88 Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 Fantastic work!! Thank You for not taking any short cuts and really giving this iconic aircraft her just due.
steven winslow Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 (edited) Pretty sure the little door located behind the cockpit you're talking about is the "emergency" crew door. Some referred to this door as the "hamburger door" because of it's proximity to the prop...and what might happen if the prop was still spinning if you exited through that door. This door gave access to the pilots if the plane was crammed full of cargo or if the access throught the rear door was blocked for some reason. The passengers wouldn't be entering the plane through that door and you certainly couldn't get any freight through that door. Passengers entered the plane through the door located on the rear left side of the aircraft. Freighters, like the Buffalo are equipped with larger doors, sometimes dual doors, on the rear left side of the aircraft. Some DC-3's were even equipped with right side passenger doors. Regardless, it seems this DC-3 is missing its passenger/cargo door.http://www.buffaloai...rnid=66&page=66http://www.starksrav...restoration.htmhttp://www.douglasdc3.com/bigaer2.jpghttp://jetphotos.net...=7327820&nseq=5http://jetphotos.net...=7324791&nseq=7http://jetphotos.net...7317902&nseq=10http://jetphotos.net...7312366&nseq=14http://jetphotos.net...7275978&nseq=29 Edited April 10, 2012 by steven winslow
Ntr09 Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 Thanks for clarifying my statement steven. All DC-3s have rear doors.-NR
Cameron Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 Thanks for clarifying my statement steven. All DC-3s have rear doors.-NRThat's not so, unless you clarify double cargo doors as such.Steven's representation is relatively accurate, though this does not mean that every single aircraft had such a configuration or that passengers always boarded through the back (though most all passenger variants did this, and as such most photos represent this).Goran has given his explanation on this. There's a great paintkit included if you'd like to artificially paint your own on!
PWJT8D Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 So I came up with an idea to use with this excellent new DC-3. If your looking for a tour, try stoping at every Aerosoft freeware airport available in Europe for XP10. I did not bother creating waypoints between each leg, you can do that as your own preference as there are multiple VOR's and NDB's available, it seems the coverage in Europe is quite extensive. I created this route to most efficiently go from one airport to the next starting in the most northern airport, Glasgow and ending in the most southern airport, Faro. The longest leg is 292.5 nautical miles and the shortest leg is 18.69 nautical miles. The total direct route length is 2932.34 nautical miles. The route is as follows:EIDWEGBBEGLLEGSSEGKKLFPOLFPGEBBREDDKEDLPEDDVEDDHEDDTEDDFEDDSEDDMLSGGLFMNLEBLLEMDLPFR
