  1. Hmmm.... So I'm just going to say how I felt when I watched this interview. I wasn't impressed. I don't think this was because of Austin. He's the owner/producer of XP. So that was completely normal. But I thought the interviewer wasn't very good. It's one thing to be a fan of Austin/Laminar/XP. But when you have an opportunity to interview him, I would have put more challenging questions to him. But then given that the interviewer is from the .Org site, I guess it was not going to go that way. I guess the ability to be a fan of a product and yet ask good questions is something that comes from maturity. Thanks for posting it here though @VirtualGAaviator

  2. I second that. It replaced my Twin Otter in the Hangar as my new Favorite. And for now, I enjoy it at the 25 Days Around the World Trip.

  3. Depending on the day, sometimes all of the above. He just likes to aggravate people. Debating/Gaslighting is a hobby of his it seems. He's a programmer of some third party freeware projects, but the significance about stops there.

  4. So you have never went around the world in a big bird(airliner)? I did a few times back in the of FS9 days, Never in x-plane. One day when I am ready, I would like to ask you send some good municipal airports in North Carolina. So I can add them to my database in my VA. Most of my flying is in the US. Mainly the western US, but go east as far as Kansas, Texas and sometimes Louisiana. Last summer I spent all summer in Alaska. I started to do the same this summer, but cut short because I think to much. I do plan to go back next summer. Thank-you for your kind words.

  5. No closed beta, and no plans to call it an open beta at this time. While its been a lot of work porting things over, its been more about calibration of the flight model, flight testing and accomodating some new datarefs than a massive overhaul of the entirety of the system. We'll be on 'rapid standby' after release to address obvious issues though and get critical patches out quickly. -tkyler

  6. I'm campaigning for this to Laminar.....the ability to exclude light sources from reflective surfaces...but as of this moment, I don't believe we can. I'll squeeze in a quick report here also. Just completed all the interior cabin texturing....at least 99.5% of it....and now I'm working on the lighting for the rear galley. Lighting for cabin/front galley already done. Next week some time I'll begin the final punchlist items list and we'll start looking to wrap things up to package for release...that's not an overnight step, lots of checks have to be made, but we're definitely coming to the end of this V12 port + process. I'm going to start calling this the "V12 compatibility patch + (plus)"....becuase its exactly that. A port of the existing V11 functionality to V12, PLUS a few extra 3D stuffs thrown in. I want to make sure people understand this isn't some "V2" with all new 3D throughout, revised FMS/VNAV etc.....that work comes after this release...this is to get folks flying the 733 in V12. Here's a update screenshot of the new cabin/rear galley....the works that's been going on the last 4 weeks. -tkyler

  7. Agreed. The questions did not push him. Maybe the next interview, wherever that might be will. BTW: I am impressed with Austin, LR and X-Plane, as well as 3rd party devs who deliver high-end products. I remember when AOL and Yahoo dominated the internet. Sears dominated retail sales. I even remember when Lotus 123 and dBase dominated software sales. The point is, org's domination is not carved in stone. As for Cameron and the X-Pilot.com site, I think he might be open to volunteer help as long as the volunteers is seriously willing to make a commitment and is competent. If all C did was maintain the site it might look different. Turns out C is heavily involved in development, as far as I can tell. I began drafting a letter to LR asking for an interview. However, I decided I might be overstepping.

  8. I am just starting to fly the "big birds", again something I've always said I'll never do. Never say never, right? I have logged quite a few hours in the CL650, though. I can program the FMC, fly SIDs and STARs. It holds the course and sticks nicely to the VNAV profile. Most of my jet flights have originated out of Raleigh-Durham and I've gone to places like Dulles-IAD, Orlando-MCO, Atlanta-ATL, Memphis-MEM, etc. I'm not a long-haul flyer. In piston-driven and turbo GA aircraft, I've limited my flight from 30nm to about 500nm depending on the aircraft, where the MU2 or PC12 might be a 500nm flight. I really don't have many airport recommendations. I downloaded some backcountry freeware airports for Idaho and Alaska. These were mainly for bush-type aircraft. Otherwise, depending on the speed of the aircraft, I'd use Skyvector to pick out an airport. I tend to limit my flights to no more than a couple hours. As for NC airports I particularly like these: Asheville-AVL, Fayetteville-FAY, and Charlotte-CLT.

  9. AVSIM is a pothole of self entitled assh..., er... "geniuses"... X-Plane was always there, the unwelcomed child of flight sim, so is not a representative place of the community's sentiment about X-Plane.

  10. No place like home. I admire you for getting out of your home area in low and slow GA aircraft. Unless I'm doing a PE flight I tend to stick really close to home. I've heard that a high percentage of fllght simmer do too. There's a whole world out there. I can say that 90% of my flights are in the US. Canada makes up 9% and the remaining 1% is other countries. I hope you get your mojo back. I've enjoyed your blog.

  11. It already is the best turboprop available for X-Plane. It is amongst the best general aviation aircraft ever made for X-Plane.

  12. I totally understand your rant, and agree troubleshooting can be very frustrating. I've occasionally found similar annoyances in X-Plane and sometimes it's easy to run out of energy and motivation to continue to troubleshoot. Rest assured it's as frustrating for the developers and publishers because they really do take a lot of pride in the product and seeing customers have a negative experience is very frustrating for everybody. From some very brief discussions there's a working theory that the issue could be related to antivirus software interacting badly with the simulation. I've seen various reports of this with other aircraft in X-Plane over the years, and there's a good possibility this could be the case for you. If you ever find yourself wanting to try X-Plane and the Challenger again then temporarily disabling your antivirus would be a good place to start for troubleshooting. You can start X-Plane when online, make sure the licence is up-to-date for the Challenger and then restart X-Plane when offline if that would make you feel happier without antivirus. If this does allow the Challenger to operate then we could continue to problem solve from there, but no pressure - as I said I understand how frustrating it can be to spend sim time on troubleshooting. If you are keen to explore the troubleshooting further, the Hot Start Discord is probably the easiest medium for this is it's slightly more interactive. Don't hesitate to tag me on there if/when you get back to it - one of the developers, moderators or the community will be there to try and help you.

  13. Hi, Thanks for your reply. I got very frustrated and then very busy so I just got back to flying again. Yesterday I was flying my TBM and X-plane crashed on me as I was changing a setting on the airplane. I know that today. if I choose new flight It will just have the engine running full speed on the ramp, flooding the engine and probably catching on fire and ruining the engine, again... This is exactly the kind of thing I would like to have addressed. Thanks again.

  14. They should. if you put them in the "locked" position, you will find you won't be able to move your controls. I know this because I spent 15 minutes trying to debug why my hardware throttles weren't working one day....until I realized I had move the control lock levers to forward. Frustrating and a relief at the same time. What I have not yet simulated though, ergo has no effect... is the alteration of lever position based on 'vibrations' or 'loose rigging'. I"ll put this in eventually...and can't wait for the bug reports when I do. -tk

  15. Status report, I just got my hands on V12.06....and the reverse seems only marginally better, still not right IMO. I expect a back and forth with Laminar on this one...and hope we can see eye to eye. If not, I'll have to overwrite and rewrite my own prop governor...not my first choice as it'll take a bit....*sigh -tk

  16. It would not bother me in the slightest if you did...I have zero pride...I make plenty of stupid errors. I don't spend the kind of time operating the sims as you guys do as I always have some other area of development I have to deal with... and always welcome observations I may have missed. Its a great part of this feedback loop and please don't hesitate to point out whatever....it makes the product better! I couldn't do it without your inputs. -tkyler
