  5. In answer to your question, air molecules don't flow straight over a wing linearly from fore to aft. Instead, the air passing under the wing tends to curve outboard, whereas the air flowing over the wing tends to curve inboard. Combined with the fact that the pressure on top of the wing is lower than the pressure under the wing, the air under the wing is going to be sucked up and over the wing at certain points, typically at wing tips. This interaction between the two air flows causes a spiral motion. As the angle of attack of the wing is increased this interaction becomes more pronounced. Extending trailing edge flaps increases the effective angle of attack and some aircraft will experience vortices from their flaps, whereas by design others don't. Aircraft with winglets are less susceptible to wingtip vortices and indeed the purpose of the winglet is to reduce the vortex effect as it causes induced drag which costs fuel. Vortices are more visual on aircraft approaching to land in moist conditions. ie, conditions where the air temperature and dew point temperature are close. The accelerating air within the vortex causes the pressure and therefore temperature to drop to that of the dewpoint temperature and the vortex becomes visible. (You can test the theory of pressure and temperature dropping in accelerated air by clenching your teeth and sucking in quickly-your teeth go cold). I hope this answers your question. For the record, I fly the real thing professionally.

  7. A fellow NoVA native! We've got the same snow. Earlier today I went to the upstairs room closest to the street to look at the front of the house. About 1/3 of the window was covered with snow. I know where I'm doing some IFR flying today!

  8. The flap vortex effect is awesome, but has anyone notice THE REALISTIC SOUND in the last sequence of the video!!!!????. It sounds real!!!! I thought it was a sound effect from real world inserted in the video!!! If you IXEG guys pay attention to this tiny details, I can't imagine what's waiting to discover!!!!

  9. Mornings are definitely no good time to fly into Dubai... Some planes have been in that holding pattern for over 40 minutes!!

  10. Fantaswtic, now do it again in HD, full screen at low res doesnt do it justice!!!! My first ever flight was in a 733 to Dunedin, turbulence all the way! Slainte, Andy NZCH

  11. What you say has merit - especially when you consider that you can make a "simplified" airplane within a year or so - and probably sell almost as many copies as you would for a very realistic version. But I think we already have a good offering of planes like that in the X-Plane franchise. And we are not only in this to make money - for me it is mostly a hommage to the best airliner I ever flew. And thinking that the very first 737-500 that I ever flew just got scrapped in Tulsa breaks my heart. I hope that we can immortalize this great aircraft with this add-on. And I don´t want to immortalize a dumbed down version (although we do have to succumb to some X-Plane and flight-simulation realities, of course). Another thing to keep in mind: The 737 is a plane that was built to "simply fly". No overly complicated system logics, no constant fighting the automation (most spoken words on some airliner´s flight deck: "What is it doing now?" and famous last words: "It´s never done THAT before!"). Not on the 737! So I think if you are a casual user and just "want to fly" you can do so. The (real) 737 does not ask for much more knowledge or system manipulation than a King Air or a Citation Jet. Set the pressurization, extend the flaps, off you go. There is a lot more to know to operate it efficiently and with reliable safety, but if you don´t have to pay for the fuel or a new airplane...then you can get away with a bare minimum of procedure adherence. If you are a total airplane noob then don´t expect to hop in and fly some complicated circling procedure on one engine. But if you can fly the default heavies with some degree of success, you will certainly be able to get our 737 from A to B. Jan

  13. Really, if we're being honest, this topic is about a video, butttttt.... Tom = Working on FMS code, as well as 3D items that had to be wrapped up and were to be expected to ship with version 1.0. VNAV continues to be the primary focus for Tom starting tomorrow after a short break to give his mind some rest and do some "easy" 3D. Sadly, he got quite ill last week while out at my office to work, so the last days have been relatively rough. In the evenings working on manuals and formatting them has been the norm, sick or not. Jan = Working with Tom on FMS testing as functionality gets implemented, and working on manuals. Me = Assisting in manuals and being overly obnoxious as per usual. Nils = Working on 3D and texturing Morten = Working on getting the paint kit in releasable fashion, as well bringing new UV maps/liveries up to speed, and just completed the new IXEG livery as seen in previous post of this thread It's a situation of the last 10% is always the hardest. You fill in the small things to make the overall product polished and complete.

  15. This is the way it works: With HDR off, you only get two "illumination beams". Inside the cockpit those are used for the "dome light" and for the "pedestal flood light". Outside the cockpit we use one for "landing lights" and one for "other lights". The other lights will switch and swap dynamically to give you the best possible experience. So in the cockpit you can still use and adjust most of the cockpit panel lighting (they dont use illumination beams), but you will loose map lights, emergency flood lights, emergency exit lighting. Outside you can see most lightbulbs shining, but the visual lighting effect is limited to two beams at the most. One is reserved for the "landing lights", so you will always see those and they light up terrain and stuff. The other one is reserved for other lights, and will be displayed as best possible. If you have one runway turnoff light on, only then that lightbeam is used. If you turn on both, then the lightbeam lights up a broad area in front. If you have only the winglight on, then it will illuminate the wing, but only one side (only one beam, remember?) Now before you start complaining - this is not something we invented to save us work, it is just a limitation of X-Plane. If you want to run a contemporary flight-simulator with an adequate appearance, you need to have the hardware. Buy, beg, borrow or steal. It´s been like that for the last 35 years. I feel sympathetic to anyone pursuing this hobby with a limited supply of resources (been there myself for the first 15 years of my computer gaming), but if we could make this simulation run full bore with 50+ FPS on your 20 year old Pentium 5, then we would be guilty of sorcery and burn at the stake... 16. I think so, too - I have only heard good things about those aircraft... the truth is that I don´t really have the time to fly X-Plane for leisure, anymore :-( Jan

  17. Click the gear button bottom right and change quality to 720p. That will give you HD in full screen (EDIT) Why on earth would someone dislike a post that is meant to help someone with a request?
