Am I banned?

I've been flying X-Plane only since V8.  I've been involved in the X-Plane community for 7 years or so.  Been a member at the org since November 2006.  For what it's worth, it was probably 8 months before I even realized there was a forum at the org.  Maybe the reason I don't understand the complaints here is because I don't get too involved over there.  Like Tom says, I just use it to get free stuff and the occasional purchase.  I leave the forums alone, other than the Carenado support thread.  I rarely say anything in the shout box.  When I do, it's usually something silly or random or a comment to Jack, Dan or Joe.  Maybe the secret to happiness is laying low at the org and cutting loose over here.  Hmmmmm......

One thing that is not lost on us here is that we...... having a free download library, are also subject to the same kind of situation over the long term; however, being the file library is in its infancy though....and developers that upload here also seem to upload to the org file library.....that means our download library serves no real purpose except to serve those with conviction against supporting the org......and right now, that is a small bunch of dudes and "long term" is probably just that....really long term, as in possibly never.

So unless developers upload here only... the x-pilot file library really won't serve the needs of those except the convicted and that isn't the fastest growing group.   BUT....as I said, this is not lost on us and we are always looking at new ways to build a better community and experience.  So it's not just a matter of us hoping the file library gets big enough with community contributed, x-pilot exclusive content to make folks come here instead of there because I don't think that will happen nor do I want it to.  Developers generally love attention and adulation and you get a whole lot more of that at the org than here so the incentive to host files here only is very small.

So we're considering (Ok, I'm trying to sell) to Cameron a few different ideas for steering x-pilot and it's community experience.  We dont' just want to be a smaller version of the org or even AVSIM,  we want to try some new stuff, quality over quantity.   Time will tell if we can get it done and if it will work.

I only posted once over there, complaining that my email to sales was ignored.

I will be uploading here only and I'm sure the trend is going to continue as more people abandon ship over there.  It is like the days of Saddam Hussien over there,  nobody willing to say anything negative about anything or they'll get shot.  Life under a dictatorship is in plain view over there.

Anyway because I'm only in it for the pure love of flight sims, I won't allow some little men with no sense of self worth or power take out their "shortcomings" on people like me.  Case closed!

  • 10 years later...

I would be the one to post on a 10-year-old conversation. I have shared my opinion in other posts regarding the way I was treated on the other website. However, I found Tom's explanation of the division from the .org site to be very interesting; it was an enlighting read.

Even 10 years later, I can't refrain from saying this:

When I first came across .org, I made a common mistake - I thought it was the official website of X-Plane.com. At that time, I was not familiar with Laminar Research or Austin Meyers. All I wanted was to improve my simulator experience. The website's name "X-Plane" gave it an inherent advantage, but it's not the official site. Nevertheless, I still use it for add-ons and support, albeit with reluctance. Although I miss the  conversational atmosphere of the other site, I'm not inclined to go back.

And I'll add on to this 10 year old thread with my opinion lol.

I was just banned from the .org forum for mentioning that a reply to a new member from a community leader was a little bit rude (in my mind it was actually quite rude) and they banned me.  I have no use for that forum over there also.  I enjoy the store part and have kept them in business for the past few years.  Brett is one of the biggest culprits over there, no sense of haha in that one.

Honestly, I miss participating in those forums, but not enough to go back. I often start conversations in the General Discussions area of this X-Pilot with the hope that people might wanna engage. Even without engagement, if I have something to say, I'll post there without hesitation.

My observations in these forums are that the administrator stays busy assisting developers with various projects and, thus, over the past 15 years or so, has abandoned the idea of taking on the other forum, head-to-head. Since the other forum shares the name of the flight sim product, it has an inherent advantage. Nevertheless, we have an opportunity here, IMO.

Another observation here is a lot of the regulars are also busy. This leaves them little time to be conversational, but they are super-happy to answer questions one has about products they support. Getting feedback on other products might be problematic; I have an issue with Better Pushback and have yet to get feedback to help figure out a resolution. Unfortunately, that compels me to go to the other forum, which I support ONLY for support.
I'm long-winded this morning. Thanks for adding to this 10-year-old thread.
