The "org" site is being reported as containing malware
greggerm replied to puffy's topic in General Discussion
Getting the same type of message in Firefox (*also the Google warning). Probably a false positive, but we'll need to give them time to clear it out. -
Finally - Terwilliger's next project! AWESOME!!! He earned his chops with One Six Right - now he's got Harrison Ford narrating and James Horner doing music? How great is that.

I'd humbly state that the statement "LOCK PLEASE!!!!" comes off far more like a demand than an offering of an opinion. But that's just my opinion.

And here I was just about to post something to the effect of Laminar Research having returned to the "crickets" mode of communications....

Yessir. Thank you! Ok - I thought the screenshots looked like SketchUp. Thanks! Keep up the good work, -Greg

Chris, As a local to PVD, let me thank you for the work you put in on that scenery. It sure stomps on my "lego brick" version! Out of curiousity, what modeling tool are you using to create these? Not that I have the time to actually get into such custom projects, but I'm interested to know on the off chance I want to dabble. Thanks, -Greg

Japan - X-Plane 10 Hd Mesh Scenery V2 Released!
greggerm replied to alpilotx's topic in General Discussion
Of course not! I just have no familiarity with Japan, so the improvements would be lost on me.... This stands in contrast with your North American HD mesh which ratcheted up the realism in areas I am familiar with, making it all the more valuable! That work in Japan is sure to make some people very happy! All in good fun! -Greg- 13 replies

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with it. Any downloading method might not be the ideal distribution vehicle for a game which spans 8 dual-layer DVDs, but its otherwise just fine. Never had any issues with it or the titles I've purchased via Steam. From an X-Plane perspective, I'd expect Steam to bring in lots of newbies, which historically has tested the patience of various forums and help communities. It will be interesting to see how it goes. In the end I can't imagine it being anything but a positive for the platform, however it won't be without it's bumps and dust-ups. -Greg

Isn't it fun! I had a network down in Tennessee for some time. Had the FBO at KBNA and a host of others for a while. I sorta miss it down there! -Greg

On the altitude blurries: Remember - you still need a system with the horsepower/capacity to support the change. You'll need plenty of memory to support the additional data being loaded, and plenty of power to make sure it plays nice with everything else. It looks like this change might actually challenge the average 64-bit system's physical memory capacities. I'm happy to see it's being addressed, but the distant visibility blur was a conscious limitation put in place by Laminar, not a bug. My three wishes: >Proper seasons. >More art assets - FAR more art assets. (autogen for better cities and for lego brick expansions for airports) >A bigger budget at Laminar for more full-time developers. (grin)

Most modern flight simulators are not bound to the speed of their storage systems except when it comes time to load a flight. Using a RAM disk might improve scenario loading times, but it won't likely do much to improve actual in-game performance like framerates and smoothness. I believe you would also need to copy your entire X-Plane installation from more traditional storage up into the RAM disk after every reboot, which may end up taking longer than the time you save by using a RAM disk. Heck - give it a shot and report back. I'm just curious what you'll experience.

Had a hardware failure (hard drive/RAID array) on their forum servers. They've been working on fixing it for the better part of the week, but apparently the process is taking quite some time. AVSIM does have a Facebook presance, and they've used that channel to provide basic "we're alive and working on it" messages. -Greg

There's been so much thrown around regarding 10.30, I have officially given up on caring about it until it's actually available as beta. Between Laminar Research's track record on their nebulous "we hope to", "we'd like to", and "we're aiming to" plans, to the community's rumor mill which swings from simple improvements to the GPS all the way up to a fully functional Garmin GNS 430 (*among others), I find myself disinterested in "playing the speculation game" and more interested in seeing results.

Not surprising - these files (*and the total size of the entire set) is larger than anything they've ever hosted I'm sure. Andras - I plonked down my $30 for a flightsim membership because of the headaches with a normal download. Once I get my full set of files, I'm considering joining the torrents as a seed. When I first "installed" it, I was quick to notice few differences.... hey, that lake hasn't changed much.... wait, I added that river and its still not here... WAIT?! WHERE'S MY OSM WORK!!?! GAAAAH! ...aaaaaaaaand then I realized I didn't install it correctly (*forgot the "earth nav data" folder). Oops! Fixed, relaunched, and aaah - better. I'm pleased with the resolution which is being utilized for OSM rivers, shorelines, and lakes. I didn't expect the recut to take some of these smaller items into account, thinking they would be filtered out, but alas - most of them are indeed present in the sim. I'm still fetching various files for the regions I did a lot of OSM work in, but around my hometown, it seems pretty clear that the improvements are there. Impressive work. It certainly does bring a lot more of the underlying scenery up to life. I'm going to explore it a bit more, especially in areas I spent a lot of time on in OSM. Of course, seeing these improvements only makes me itch more for the ability to do this sort of (DSF file) scenery generation on our own, as it's very fulfilling to see all the changes take form in the simulation. Well done. -Greg

Custom scenery buildings and objects, be it 3rd party addons or built-in as part of the new airport initiative, always have the chance to interact with each other unless there are exclusion zones created. Ultimately, the author of the 3rd party Boston scenery (or yourself) will need to add exclusion zones under and around the buildings in the 3rd party scenery to suppress the new buildings which show up as part of the base scenery.

[Closed] DC3 update - compass info please
greggerm replied to rjsagel's topic in Douglas DC-3 (no longer in use)
Hello all - I'm just getting around to reinstalling X-Plane and the DC-3 after a good period off from the sim, and (like everyone else) I'm seeing the funky compass. I came in to report it, but it appears as though it's already been discussed. It's been just about 3 weeks since the last communication on the matter, and 2+ months since it's appearance here on the forum... Any updates on when we should expect the update? -Greg -
PMDG officially developing for X-Plane

How about the European Saab 340? Can't speak to it's quality (not an owner), but it is a brand spankin' new turboprop for X-Plane... -
DC3 v1.2 HUD View (cockpit interference)
greggerm replied to greggerm's topic in Douglas DC-3 (no longer in use)
Most strange - upon further review (aka: tonight's flying session), the issue is not apparent and all is working normally. The HUD view is behaving as it should, without any signs of the 3D cockpit in view. Strange. It would appear to be OK at this time. I'll report back if it happens again. -
Greetings, Upon updating/installing v1.2, I've noticed a change in how the HUD view functions. Prior to the update, selecting the X-Plane forward HUD view presented the classic (*dare I say proper?) appearance of a forward-looking view with only the HUD information superimposed on the window. Now on v1.2, the HUD mode keeps the 3D cockpit in view, and the HUD itself is superimposed on that while looking out the cockpit window, with all the cockpit instrumentation and framework cluttering the view. Despite the well-done 3D cockpit of the DC-3, I often enjoy flying in the HUD view to get an uncluttered, full-frame view of the world passing below. It'd be a great shame to have it lost on this aircraft. Would it be possible to have this view restored to its original functionality? Or did something go wonky with my installation which has caused this issue? -Greg

Well, the original screenshot vs. Steve's were from two different pages on the website. I don't have a .org store account so I can't verify this to be the case, but it stands to reason that the information may be different on the "Account History" page vs. the "Available Downloads" page. I think it's more telling that the original poster has remained silent on this topic since the original posting. Two going on three pages later, I tend to feel that if this was a legitimate complaint he'd be more active in the discussion.
