  1. Hi Jenoma, I'm not an expert by any means, but what I investigated so far (for non commercial apps), it heavily depends on local services available for the area you're interested in. (I mean local national geographical services). In Spain, for example we have http://www.mapa.es/en/sig/pags/sigpac/intro.htm that has public high quality images, although they are watermarked. Other countries may have similar services with different restrictions. The World Wind project at NASA makes use of many publicly available sources, you may have a look at it. If you were thinking about Google Earth / Virtual Earth, you really need to go through their licenses carefully. They don't happily allow the distribution of content streamed by their servers outside their own applications. But don't take this firmly, go through the licenses and make your own interpretation.
