  1. Freda - To install custom scenery in X-Plane, you save the file to the "Custom Scenery" directory within your main X-Plane directory. Are you familiar with the installation process of custom content in X-Plane?
  2. This and a new Canon lens will certainly more than fill my Christmas stocking this year. Cheers to you, John. We're all grateful that you pulled through all the hassle of making this work. It's a whole new sim...
  3. lols no linux support hehehehehehhehe
  4. Hawaii is even better now. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Also, thank you. I wish I had a computer powerful enough to use this stuff. Time to sell the car and mortgage the dog.
  5. Although beauty and aesthetics are the focus of scenery developers, one common focus of almost all members and developers of this community is the concept of keeping in mind the primary use of X-Plane: flight. Not 3D modelling of environment. I will have to agree, the beauty of the world as seen while flying is nowhere near achieved in the X-Plane world. Perhaps it will be one day, but most effort these days goes into flight model performance. X-Plane is special for this. As a scenery developer, I can promise you that it is no easy task to achieve what you'd like, and certainly on a large scale, at this time, it is impossible. I have no interest in flight modelling personally, I wish to improve the flights of those who are. On missions, there are plugins for that. In real life, there are no missions. You do as you are told without constant updating and controlling. In real life, if you wanted to go AWOL with that little Cessna you rented, you could. In X-Plane, you can. Use your creativity to have missions. When I feel like playing a game, that's what I do. X-Plane is diverse. All of what you said is possible - some of it may not yet be available or developed in any way. It takes time. With a user-reliant community, that's how things work. Cheers.
  6. If you need more help, let us know. We are here to help.
  7. Hey what do you have against Nunavut? That's an important part of Canada I cannot wait - thanks for all the great work!
  8. In a twin engine plane, when one engine fails, there is always enough power in the remaining engine to get you to the site of the crash. WestJet pilots have mastered speedlisting, a new form of the landing checklist completed in a minimal amount of time, due to the size of their bounces. ETOPS: Engines Turning or Passengers Swimming How many pilots does it take to change a lightbulb? One - one to hold the lightbulb and the whole world to revolve around him. At a recent software engineering management course in the US, the participants were given an awkward question to answer. "If you had just boarded an airliner and discovered that your team of programmers had been responsible for the flight control software how many of you would disembark immediately?" Among the ensuing forest of raised hands, only one man sat motionless. When asked what he would do, he replied that he would be quite content to stay onboard. With his team's software, he said, the plane was unlikely to even taxi as far as the runway, let alone take off. Q: How do you know if a pilot is at your party? A: He'll tell you. The propeller is just a big fan in front of the plane used to keep the pilot cool. When it stops, you can actually watch the pilot starts sweating. The probability of survival is inversely proportional to the angle of arrival. Helicopters can't fly; they're just so ugly the earth repels them. The three most useless things to a pilot are the altitude above you, runway behind you and a tenth of a second ago. (This one is awful) That was quite a bump, and I know what you are all thinking. I'm here to tell you it wasn't the airline's fault, it wasn't the pilot's fault, it wasn't the flight attendant's fault ... It was the asphalt! Enjoy! More on their way as I find them
  9. A note on importing into WED: With GeoTIFF, the images will literally fall straight to where they belong.
  10. Here are the sources I use/am aware of: United States/~40km of Canada North of the border, including Oahu, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa and all 48 of the Contiguous United States: (GeoTIFF Format): USGS EarthExplorer United States, American Samoa, Maui, Kauai, and Maui Volcanic Chain, as well as certain USA Protectorates (GeoTIFF in some areas, JP2 in others - JP2 requires conversions): TheNationalMap Many cities and areas provide TIFFs of their areas. Please note that G2XPL is illegal if you are making use of Google, Bing, or Yahoo! imagery, along with copying any Google data (including image data) into WED. (edit:) This includes using Google, Bing or Yahoo! imagery as a reference material. No derivative works as per the terms of use. Cheers! I hope my sources helped you out. If you need help using them, I am familiar with the tools.
  11. Thanks, I'll look into it. Fortunately there are no other islands except the ones I'm working on within the DSF tiles for this scenery. Cheers.
  12. Today marks Remembrance Day in Canada. I took the bus downtown to the ceremonies and watched as thousands of people stood in silence with their hats off in the freezing air to honour those Canadians who fell for our country. This was followed by a flyover by three CT155's from Cold Lake. I hope all of you Canadians stopped at 1100 this morning and gave two minutes of silence to the fallen of our nation, and I hope that those in other countries around the world will stop on their day of remembrance and think about who was sacrificed for you to be where you are now. Rest in peace infantry, sailors and airmen alike who lost their lives in our wars which have been far too many. Lest We Forget.
  13. Good picture of what is finished so far:
  14. Another screenshot....
  15. More development from after hours last night ... (don't ask about the three runways, it's the airport which is a separate scenery file) Here are the modifications to the airport imagery I had to make: -Relocate airport by approximately 900 feet. -Move runway within the airport boundary to avoid a cliff. -Add a completely new road from scratch. -Add another completely new road from scratch. -Remove a plane from the tarmac (and that was the easy part).
  16. Well, my computer finally recovered, and I have a long weekend ahead of me... after only about 7 hours of tweaking, I have my template to do the coastlines of Tau, the island that will be released in the demo. Here it is... (It has since changed a little, the imagery isn't so "hazy" looking): Cheers, and this project is back on track
  17. Without a shovel. No, seriously, here's what I want to do: I want to modify the default DSF tiles to remove the old ground textures so that I can drape my orthophotos on them without any ground underneath. Please don't question my motives, I just want to know how to do this. No alternatives. I just need a way of replacing the default textures with my own. Thanks to anyone who could help with this. EDIT: In case it wasn't obvious, I need terrain to remain. EDIT: As in elevation profile.
  18. Not X-Plane, but aviation, related: I've been reading about the Thorium engine concept: using high-energy Thorium to produce heat, making steam, and running a turbine. I personally think it's brilliant: With a bit more research, I found out that Thorium is easier to obtain than Plutonium or Uranium, and is not radioactive enough to cause any harm to humans. Although extended exposure is linked to health issues, it is generally safe, probably safer than breathing in gasoline fumes every day at the pump. Apparently, the cars would only have to be refuelled once every eighty to one hundred years. Here's my musing: What if we could apply this to aircraft engines? Imagine being able to land and take off without fuelling up, especially in a huge plane like an A380 or a B747. Of course, these wouldn't be able to run for eighty years on fuel, probably only a couple of flights considering the volume of fuel currently consumed by aircraft, but it would open a new possibility in the world that vanished with rising fuel prices: Supersonic air travel. Fuel costs too much. Also, having less weight on board the planes in fuel, the airlines could fit more cargo onboard, allow for heavier luggage (although we all know that would never happen without extra fees), and that pesky carbon tax would disappear off the ticket price. Currently the technology isn't efficient enough to be light enough to power a plane, but it's almost there.
  19. I am no longer developing scenery publicly for X-Plane. Sorry for those who were looking forward to current projects.
  20. Awe baby yeah.
  21. I have this attachment to the X737, only because I have flown on a 737-800 more than any other aircraft out there. I would have to put a C150 in close second, since it's the only plane I've ever been behind the controls of. In the way of space ships, the Space Shuttle is a beautiful girl. For "the one that uses too much fuel but is still cool," the 747. The A380 is cool, but the 747 has personality. And I've seen one being built, so that also helps.
  22. www.youtube.com/embed/DtyfiPIHsIg Awesomeness. EDIT: My embed function doesn't work.
  23. FLAT OUT PAUSE Ok that's about it. I've put the project on pause as midterms are here. Very little has been accomplished recently with the project, and I will have to do a ton of work before even the demo is usable or distributable. On that note, however, Christmas still seems like a very reasonable timeframe. I need to go make an omelette now. See y'all on the flip side.
  24. Holy crapamole looking forward to this release. Money in hand.
  25. An FPS count? My computer can barely load X-Plane alone. I managed to load it and see that it's beautiful. Sorry about that All I can say is keep up the good work.
