Ok, that wasn't so hard. I think i am going to package this as an add-on scenery to the base airport, because it will eat up VRAM like cookie monster.

Doing some photo scenery testing. They are high res (4K tiles) should take about 36 of them to cover the airport. In the images below are 3 of them. I had my doubts, but I think it looks pretty good: The runway texture is by FLYJSIM, the blast pad is the orthophoto: Coloring is not too bad, kinda close to the deafult textures so hopefully it won't stand out as bad:

Thanks for the kind words. I should be finished soon.

Thanks for the responses guys. Let me follow that up with another question. Are there any issues with releasing an additional package of orthophoto scenery that would sit under the my current KPVD? That way users could elect to have the photoreal or not depending on preference and computer quality. I've run some tests and it seems to work ok...but I don't see this happen much and I am wondering if I am missing something. I think they will actually look pretty good (don't mind the black line...alpha problem due to re-projection and conversion..will be fixed.) and i think they will blend into the default scenary fairly will (not the airport grsss, which will be gone) Thanks, Chris

Oh No.... it was a totally accident, Tony! Sorry...i didn't realize i hit that button...wierd... and I just now noticed this post. I love where your tool is headed. I have not had a chance to try it...mainly because I am waiting for my new computer to be up and running. I am way low on disk space on this one. Keep up the great work!! Anybody know how to remove a dislike?

Still going....lots yet to do, but I can see the light!! I had to get creative with the interlink "T" train station...a bit of facade a bit of modeling. I'll be adding the factories and stuff that goes around the station: Finished the ATCT facility, complete with spinning radar...my first animation! Work continues on the ramp and equipment: There are a few areas which ramp vehicles can pass underneath the terminal. I hope to get marginal's ground traffic zipping through there. View from the flight deck. Interesting that many of the lead in lines and ramp marking are very different from each other. Kind of a pain. haha Still lots to do...

So what are people thoughts generally about whether to place othrophotos in airport scenery? Personally I find them distracting when they are low res, and even athigh res they sometimes don't look great on the ground. But when they are done right, they look amazing. I do have access to .15m resolution orthophoto's for my KPVD project, and am currently using them for overlay images in WED to update and expand on the default layout. They are pretty high res, but man were they a pain to work with. The were originally, JPG2 files from the USGS at 10000X10000 pixels in UTM zone 19N. I had to re-project them to LL-WSG-84, then "chop" them up into 16 sections because WED chokes on huge images, then convert them to geo-tiff. Thankfully I have tools at work that allow be to script and batch the process all at once, but still. Anyway I am considering using them in my project, but I am not sure i want to go to the effort of actually getting them into x-plane (well until WED 1.3 is release, which may be a different story). Is this something people really want? Sorry for the late night open ended question...

Work continues.... Today, I took a break from the tedious texturing of the main terminal to do a fun little building on the the northern end of the airport. Officially know as the Rhode Island State Airport Terminal building, it was built in 1932 as part of the initial airport construction. It served as the main terminal building and ATCT until 1961. It's a lovely little art deco gem, that is still in use today as an office of the US weather service: Its interesting that taxiway A on the north ramp actually jogs to miss the building: I've also been toiling away at the main parking area and interlink connection to the train station about a mile away. The main connector is built, i just need to add the station, and clean up the roads and autogen: The taxiways, markings and lighting have all been finished (for the most part): Finally, I'll leave you with a shot looking across the airport looking southeast to the Providence River and Greenwich Bay, if you look close you'll see a SW B737 lifting off from runway 5. (can you tell I like night shots ;-))

Your link is missing? What type of GIS data is it?
-
Thanks for the encouragement. Here is some more progress. Drop off area is getting there and all of the taxiways updated and enhanced (correctly positioned, etc) and includes real markings at confusing intersections...these are FAA hot spots: ummmm...Which way????

Moving onto the terminal... modeling is about 75% done for just the terminal building and concourses. I started some texturing and laid out a few gates. Texturing needs work for sure, I am testing out different methods of baking the ambient occlusion, getting close to something i like.. Haven't done and normal maps or anything yet.

Thanks John, let us know if you come up with anything.

Hi John, sorry to hijack this thread a bit, but is there a list of known issues for SMP posted anywhere? I've been having this problem with the police car lights and its been driving me nuts, but never thought SMP was the issue....i will diable it to confirm.

First up, the ARFF. I've model the building and a single crash truck (#2), still need to model the bigger trucks. I've used the light bar lights, but they always seem to look bad for me for some reason...still working on it. This is what I used for reference http://capecodfd.com/pages%20special/ARFF%20Apparatus%2009.htm

Hi All, This will be my first real attempt at developing a custom airport. I chose KPVD because of it's modest size, yet has all the bells and whistles of a very large airport. I've also flown in there a few times (as a passenger). It is decently fleshed out in the global scenery, so I will be adding custom buildings and areas bit by bit. I'll update this thread as I progress. Any suggestions or feedback is welcome and appreciated! Goals: Fully modeled terminal, including all gates, curbside drop off and interlink buildings and "T" stationFully modeled accessory buildingsAccurate ramp and taxiway markings/lightingAuto-gatesGround TrafficAccurate ATC flowsPOSSIBLE orthophotosother stuff.... It will be freeware obviously. This will be a learning experience for sure. Well... here goes nothing!

Thanks guys, exclusion zones did the trick. Thanks!

Thanks guys I will check both of those. I am pretty sure the ICAO are identical, but will check to be sure.

Hi All, I'll be playing around with making some custom airports, and I am having a problem with a "global airport" the ships with the sim, still showing even though my "custom version" is listed higher in the scenery pack ini file. I've created and modified a few other airports without issue. The only difference I made this time was grabbing the snippet of code that defines the airport in the huge apt.dat file, and making a new apt.dat that I've modified via WED. I've also placed some items via the overlay editor, but they obviously conflict with the default global version. Should I have cut that snippet rather then copy it? I just assumed that having a higher priority should have suppressed the default scenery. BTW, the airport in question is KPVD T.F. Green International. I am working on a new realistic terminal building and few other goodies. I'll make a new thread once i have some progress to show. Thanks for any assistance, Chris
