Colin S Posted July 26, 2015 Report Posted July 26, 2015 Hi, This isn't a performance issue but it's more an aesthetic. I'm a bit OCD about file organization on my computer and I want to know if the folder that was placed in my X-Plane 10 root directory called _CommonRedist is vital or if it can be removed safely? Thanks, I love SkyMAXX, worth every penny and then some. Quote
sundog Posted July 26, 2015 Report Posted July 26, 2015 I think it's just Visual Studio runtime library installers that have already been installed into your system, so probably safe to delete. I'd wait for someone from X-Aviation to chime in to be sure though. Quote
Cameron Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 I've actually never heard of this, nor do I know what you mean. Is there anything in the directory? Quote
Jim Kallinen Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 Just went through my X-Plane 10 route directory and found no such file. Even went through all my plugins and found nothing. Something installed must have had this with. I have just aboutevery plugin and add on installed and have heard of it. I would suggest scanning it with an antivirus program before deleting. No telling if its a trogan. Quote
Colin S Posted July 27, 2015 Author Report Posted July 27, 2015 (edited) It was installed with SkyMAXX Pro (as in I watched the file appear and saw the words CommonRedist flash up) when it was installing. If it's a trojan I'm unimpressed but I'll scan it. Here's the file structure. Cameron or John might be able to shed some light. EDIT Apparently it's to do with C++ 2010. I still need to know if it's vital for SkyMAXX Edited July 27, 2015 by Colin S Quote
Cameron Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 We don't ship x86 files, Colin, nor do we create such a directory. Judging by the creation date I'd say you may be faking yourself out here. Never in my life have I seen these files or folders. This is not part of the SkyMaxx Pro install. Quote

I'm not "faking myself," whatever that is supposed to imply. I'm just looking for a bit of help. I'll remove the file and see if SkyMAXX still works. If it doesn't well then I guess I'm hooped, eh? sundog Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 While I don't know for sure where those files came from, they are installers for the Visual Studio runtime libraries. If SkyMaxx Pro is working OK on your system already, then SkyMaxx Pro has no need for them. Quote

Cameron Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 I'm not "faking myself," whatever that is supposed to imply. Seriously? I said faking yourself out...as in making yourself think it was a part of SkyMaxx Pro when it wasn't. I know your personality enough to know you want to come back here in a reply now and tell me I'm wrong and you're right. I still disagree. Quote
philipp Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 Those are the _installers_ for the Visual C++ redistributable libraries (msvcrt.dll and other dlls). The _installers_ can be safely deleted. They are unpacked by the installers of the parent products (like the CRJ, Skymaxx, and probably other addons) and then launched in the background to have the msvcrt.dll and similar files installed in the appropriate location of Windows (C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64 respectively). So you CAN delete the installers left behind in the X-Plane directory. Nuke them, nothing bad will happen. You CANNOT delete the MSVCRT.dll from C:\Windows\System32 because that will cause many software (not only X-Plane plugins) to fail. Philipp 1 Quote

Provided the installers actually contain them, Philipp. In this instance, that was more the question. Our installers do not dump this directory in this folder as explained by Colin. 1 Quote

Sorry Cameron, I've never heard that expression and to someone who has never heard that expression it sure sounds a lot like me faking that anything had actually happened. My bad. Thanks for the clarification. I knew they were the installers, and thank you for clarifying that they are destroyable. Problem solved gentlemen, thank you! Quote
