Hi everybody! I was wondering, how do you guys fly your approach? Do you follow the STARs all the time (Every approach)? When do you lower the gear and flaps? I'm still trying to figure out a "standard", as my approach procedures are a bit random from time to time. Usually I lower the flaps to 15 and gear out at approximately 2500 ft above the field (Or at the radio altimeter call out). After that I just slowly slow down to a speed I feel flaps 30(40) should be lowered, then slow to landing speed. But the same goes to flaps 1 and 5. When do you lower them? Towards the Final Approach Fix / Downwind & Base? I'm still learning and hope to get some good replies.

Guys, While everyone returns to flight school (with a big smile on their face) I thought it appropriate to share a great video of some touch and go practice....Yes it's an NG (and yeah lots of you will have seen it before) but the set-up - Take off from KSJC/SJC (MINETA SAN JOSE INTL, UNITED STATES) to KSMF/SMF (SACRAMENTO INTL, UNITED STATES) for the touch and go's via the SUNOL7 departure is a nice little jaunt with a dash of realism.. I've just completed about 5 "bounces" and it's really satisfying nailing them in this bird, hand fly as much as you can and you'll be rewarded - although the automatics come in handy as a solo pilot when you're "go-ing" Anyway here's the video link, hope you have fun recreating (don't forget to use the FIX feature on the CDU to set up your 3 mile ring ) "Stand em up, push em up...." Good morning all, Sorry to bother with what may seem like boring old questions. I am trying to learn flying helis, with the 500 and EC135 at present, with the idea of buying BK117 asap. I am finding it very very difficult. take off ok, level flight ok, but landings are hit and miss. I read some of Nicola m suggestions so I try to approach at 40kt, between 300/500fpm descent, flare than hover just above ground and touch down. Well often i get it wrong and often, just when i think i have all under control and coming smoothly down, all power goes to zero and i drop down like a stone. I can see my mistakes when i overcontrol etc... But this sudden shutdown and stone-drop i cannot understand. Any ideas? Have seen videos on you tube of xplaners landing so smoothly and on a ten pence coin, how on earth do you guys do it? Any help is kindly accepted. Best regards PS would the BK117 make things easier for me?
