  1. I've started working on the ortho-underlay for KFMY. Thanks to Chris K I managed to keep WED 1.2 from crashing as I placed the ortho TIFFs and downsampled to 4096 pixels. I took a look in X-Plane, and my jaw dropped. It looks so life-like. Here's what they look like without any manipulation: I plan to remove some buildings and shadows and "lay some sod" around Base Ops, as the photo was taken during its construction. Then, I will probably DDS these, as I did notice that having 6 4096px PNGs absolutely killed my FPS with textures rendering at "very high." Once this update is finished, I'm moving on to...ahem...the international airport.
  2. Regarding the navigational equipment like ILS beacon, VOR, check out this topic: http://forums.x-pilot.com/index.php/topic/3408-moving-ils-ariels-in-wed/
  3. I too was attempting to work with USGS ortho TIFF files downloaded directly from the map viewer. Each file is 15,000 pixels square. I'm not having alpha issues, but when I load them in WED 1.2 (beta) in order to snap them on their coordinates, WED crashes. Is this a memory issue, or a file issue. The former orthos downloaded via email from USGS worked in WED.
  4. I'm texturing this based on what I saw on Google Street View. This going to work for you, or do you want it a standard beige. And do you want GI lighting attached to the building?
  5. Thanks! I really appreciate the comments (and the suggestion Chris...I've already made the change.) I have a ortho that I have been working on in photoshop. It's really large, and after removing a lot of planes and buildings etc, I found some tips (thanks again Chris!) that made me want to wait and perfect it before publishing. That will be included in the update. My only issue is how wide to go with the ortho beyond the actual airport. I feel that it doesn't fit well with the auto gen scenery. But thanks!!
  6. What kind of doors/ type of hangar is it? And where? I could use the same texture I sent you to model one that size. I like to see a pic if possible.
  7. Have you ever tried overlaying monochromatic noise in the orthos using photoshop, particularly on the hard surfaces? I noticed in the ortho I was working on (similar to yours above) that the WED lines had so much more texture than the ortho underneath.
  8. I may be dreaming. As it is right now in xp10, one can file a flight plan and request IFR clearance using a valid radio frequency. The specifics of the flight plan are determined in the ensuing dialogue box in X-Plane. Using this same set-up and the valid frequency for one's airport, what would it take to request a VFR departure (with a destination selected), or a simple traffic pattern for touch-and-go's. Either way, especially for most controlled airports, the steps (and programming ) are the same as currently exists with IFR, just without a radar following, and vectors. For example: 1. Request Clearance. (same) 2. Request Taxi. (same) 3. Receive Take Off Clearance (same, including a departure heading) 4. Hand-off (same) --proceed to destination-- 5. Request Approach (the possibility could exist within a certain NM range of the declared destination??) 6. Request Landing Clearance (same) 7. Receive Landing Clearance. (same) 8. Receive Taxi instructions (same) Is this possible, or feasible?

  10. File Name: KFMY - Page Field - Fort Myers, Florida File Submitter: 3TB File Submitted: 10 Jan 2013 File Category: DSF Scenery Packages X-Plane Version(s): X-Plane 10 Page Field (KFMY) is a popular GA airport in Fort Myers, Florida. If you are into GA flying, or business jets as large as 727s, this is the hub for you. Page Field is also a great airport for cross country flying. Located in Southwestern Florida, it's easily accessible to Orlando, Lakeland, Tampa, St. Pete, Palm Beach, Vero, Miami, Key West, Naples, and it's nearby companion, KRSW. My goal was to make this airport as realistic as possible for the sake of "feeling at home" and for practicing IFR cross country procedures. Contents Completely accurate airport layout 26 Custom Objects, accurately representing facilities including Base Ops (FBO), hangars, tarmac layout, parking lots, etc. Multiple starting points for single/multi-prop and jets, including hangar space and tie-down spots. Starting points on all runway entrances. Global lighting attached to every building. Accurate, named ATC paths Taxiway and Runway signs Most up-to-date Airport Diagram (PDF) Requires X-Plane 10 OpenSceneryX for aircraft population only (can be removed using WED 1.2) Object Rendering Settings at "tons" for full airport To Do List (for future version) Bump Maps on all objects Finish modeling 5 remaining hangars Model surrounding shopping centers, etc. Ortho-photo of all grassy areas on airport premises This is my first airport scenery for X-Plane. I used WED 1.2, Blender 2.63, and Photoshop. I am grateful for so many of you who have posted invaluable how-to information. Please let me know if you have any issues or problems. Also, if you would like to use any of my custom objects, please feel free--and let me know! I'd also be happy to customize any, if I am able. Click here to download this file
  11. Page Field is POSTED!!! After 4 months of work, Page Field is complete. Download and enjoy. Also, please let me how I can improve. I modeled and textured all objects (and lights) using Blender and a text editor. As far as OBJ8 specifications go, I learned as I went. I did my best to incorporate all objects using one texture file. However, to do so, and to save texture space, I struggled with the vertices count. How high is too high? Anyway, let me know if anything sticks out to your trained eye.

  13. If any of you would like to test KFMY on your system/version of x-plane, please message me and I'll send you a link. I'm all done, and will be posting the file this week, perhaps tomorrow if no issues.
  14. I saw that KEKQ has two row hangars and I measured them in Google Earth (really handy tool for sure!). They are 70m (230ft) x 16m (52ft). The hangar in the photo I posted is the same size. Yours if you want it.
  15. NR, what size do you need? I have made custom row hangars for my KFMY scenery, of varying length. If you are interested, let me know the length/width in meters and the general color (light or dark beige). I may be able to customize it for you.
  16. Thanks Capt.Standford! There is a fence around the entire field, exactly as there is one at FMY. Using Google Maps 45 degree view and Bing's Birds Eye, I placed the fences and gates in x-plane exactly where they exist. Out of all the buildings and hangars at FMY, there are only a couple not modeled. Thats what took me so so long. If you use the airport chart for KFMY, all of the buildings marked on it are there, except the fire station and two or three privately owned hangars. I need better pictures on the fire station before I can model it. One thing that I'm sad to say isn't exact is behind Base Ops in the parking lot there is a beautiful T-6 on display. Unfortunately I haven't begun learning how to model aircraft yet, so I used OpenSceneryX's P-47. The airport is DONE. I cleaned the file up last night and am figuring out how to upload it. Look for it this week!
  17. Capt.Stanford, what do you mean by spawn point? I have optional "starting points" on every ramp, (eg South Ramp, Southwest Ramp, L hangars, F hangars, the new West Ramp, etc.) Does this look familiar? Yes, I have Paragon's hangar and a few 172's on the ramp nearby. I hear good things about them! I can't wait to hear how "realistic" you find this apt file! Here's some other screen shots I posted a couple months ago:
  18. Thanks all, and thanks, Simon, for that link! -Tim
  19. Page Field (KFMY) is a popular GA airport in Fort Myers, Florida. It's a perfect airport for flight training, where I logged 20 hours or so back in 2000. Since then the airport has grown, both in aircraft population and infrastructure. My goal was to make this airport as realistic as possible for the sake of practicing IFR cross country procedures. This is my first airport scenery endeavor, and I did my best to recreate FMY and its infrastructure, including a usable Class C airspace, for X-Plane 10. Here's what I came up with: Completely accurate airport layoutCustom Objects, accurately representing facilities including Base Ops (FBO), hangars, tarmac layout, parking lots, etc. Multiple starting points for single/multi-prop and jets, including hangar space and tie-down spots. Global lighting attached to every building.ATC pathsTaxiway and Runway signsOpenScenery X for aircraft population only (grouped and labeled; easily removable in WED)The only thing I'm missing is palm trees and some small shrubbery. I've tried some custom objects, but haven't quite taken to them yet. I have an orthophoto, but I'm not including it in the first version. I'm in the final stage of testing the file and organizing the folder contents. I hope to upload by next week. Let me just say that I am so grateful for the many of you whose how-to posts have been a huge help! I do have one logistical problem that I can't solve. Any ideas how to move what appears to be the airport VOR or glideslope beacon (as shown)? It doesn't show up in WED, and it's not where it *should be.* I'd like to not have to move the taxiway (which has only existed at FMY for a couple years now)
  20. Page Field in Fort Myers, Florida is a perfect airport for GA operations in Southwest Florida--and for flying instruction. (It's where I flew my first solo) It's also my first airport scenery for X-Plane 10. I'm using Blender, Photoshop, and WED. I'm also programing G.I lighting on all models. My plan is to only use OpenSceneryX for static aircraft population. I'm currently working on the last few models, as well as some palm trees and plant vegetation. I plan to also increase the resolution on the ortho once I know how the FPS interacts with the models. The ATC paths will be included as well. If any of you are into GA operations in the Southeastern United States, hope this can be an asset for you--and a base to house your aircraft. (hangar real estate will be..available)
  21. KFMY (Page Field, Fort Myers, FL). And thanks, I think I'm going to err on the side of detail.
  22. completed 8 objects and have 15 more hangars/buildings with moderate variations in texture and complexity. I'm also attaching global lighting to each object. I'm brainstorming best way to build inexpensive vegitation in blender as v10 library is lacking. Problem is I'm learning as I go, and when I do, I have to go back and "make changes" on object commands, etc. I'd love a "standard." As for my "FBO" obj, I designed large (low point count) meshes with whole faces drawn on its own UV map. However, im thinking with a more complex mesh, isolating windows and doors etc, will enable me to cut texture space in half. I guess this would necessitate remapping anyway. Oh well.
  23. Yes. Since discovering how Tom organized his scenery files, I started texturing my models using the same 2048x1024 PNG. However, I now want to go back and do this for the (..complex) models I have already built and textured with their own individual PNG files. I am frightened by having to re-map them again for collaborations sake.
  24. Tom, I'm a latecomer to this, but is this collaboration effort still in the works? Would love to contribute. I'm curious how to combine UV maps in blender for separate objects. I'm starting to optimize and finalize objects and textures for my first airport project.
