I guess my biggest gripe, and why I won't support this flightplanner, is that they don't mention anywhere about how it can be used in conjunction with X-Plane. Why in the world would I support 3rd party addon software that won't officially acknowledge that their product will work with X-Plane? I simply won't ... and certainly not for the price they're asking! Now ... if the planner stated that they supported X-Plane .. I'd buy it in a heartbeat, because I (in common with every other dedicated X-Planer ), have a vested interest in seeing X-Plane grow.

Mint is a repackaging of current Ubuntu and alternatively, Debian. The main Mint distro (the Ubuntu version) comes with Mint's own environment options .. Cinnamon and/or Mate; which I believe are forks from Gnome2 ... a response to dissatisfaction with where Gnome 3 and Unity ( for Ubuntu) was headed. You can currently get the main Ubuntu based Mint in KDE, XFCE or standard (Cinnamon/Mate) configurations.

I don't get that impression at all ... don't you think he's more likely to be realistic about Linux sales?

It's Friday and I have to go to work .. I'll REALLY be concentrating on the task at hand today ...not! Thanks Cameron

Then Linux Advocates are confused ... because GPL is not about free as in 'costs nothing' .. it's free as in the source code is open and when you buy/get the software, you also get the rights to change it to suit your needs (with certain specific caveat's depending on license) ... so it doesn't ignore sales per se. There is another type of Linux Advocate ... such as your good self ... who both advocate Linux and are willing to use the non-free software ... these are the advocates who need to be the architects of the future they wish to see with regard to X-Plane. Every grand design has to begin from somewhere ... and the progress can be agonizingly slow! As for me, I identified a while ago that I was more interested in flying than tinkering with Linux ... and since making that decision, my stress levels have dropped and my hair grew back .

And that's the issue in a nutshell .. and what I've been harping on for ages on the Linux Advocacy forums. Linux may be the next best thing since sliced bread .. but paired with the intention to install X-Plane on it .. it's a bloody nightmare .. especially for a person who has no knowledge of the OS to begin with. It shouldn't matter that Linux is great and all that .. for an X-Plane user what matters is that they can install XP with minimum fuss, get their setup working (JS etc) with minimum fuss .. and get to fly some awesome payware planes .. with minimum fuss. If this all means that I have to fly Windows 7 .. then so be it .. thank be to the gods that I can do all of that in Windows .. and I'm sure the Mac guys feel the same way . Linux advocates have a bit of work to do .. if they want a future that supports their OS .. It's unreasonable to expect the devs to do it .. when they're trying to survive (and hopefully thrive) as a business .. and when people are downright rude and unsociable to these same devs .. it's just unconscionable behaviour IMO (not saying it's you btw!). Cheers Kris P.

Ointment .. I haven't heard anything from Goodways .. I quoted from a blurb on their web site which has been up for donkey's ages. My point though, was that having a flight planner that's integrated into the sim is actually a good thing IMO. I don't own Goodway .. but it does have a rep in the X-Plane world, just don't think that it works in XP-10 anymore (until or if 5 makes an appearance).

I disagree about the FM realism of IL-2; I thought it was very watered down.. but that's OK .. we just see it differently! Regarding DCS I find that the world and the reasons for flying it to be the limiting factors. I'm not that interested in air combat anymore .. much prefer to fly a regional route IFR than tango with the MiG's It wasn't always the case .. but one probably settles down a bit with age .. lol!
-
Regarding IL-2 .. realistic? Not really. DCS .. is still a game .. with some impressive FM work, but quite a few other limitations IMO. lol Truthfully .. they're all games!

True .. but there's already some good free options available that do just what you say .. And here's the reason (from the dormant Goodway devs), why one that intergrates with X-Plane would be most welcome ... The first goal of GoodWay v5 is to provide flight planning for X-Plane 10 (and X-Plane 9). Another important goal is integration with this fantastic flight simulator. This is why this new version comes with 2 parts: the plugin (GoodWay On Board) and the standalone program (GoodWay Alone). Here is what you will be able to do the plugin: Create flight plans manually. - can do this in Plan-GModify your GoodWay flight plans.Follow your flight live on a map. - can do this in Plan-GDisplay the navigation data from the X-Plane database. - can do this in Plan-GProgram your Flight Management System (FMS).Submit your flight plan to X-Plane Air Traffic Control.Tune your radios on the navigation frequencies of the flight plan. - can do this in Plan-G with Submit your flight plan to the XQuawkbox world wide network.

People often appear to forget that the vendor has to make an income out of this as well. They'd have to be some masochistic beastie if they developed just for the heck of it .. considering the amount of criticism that they seem to regularly cop; I'd hate to be a developer! From an impartial statistical perspective though, this figure is skewed because of the addons that do support Linux, there are only a subset of Linux users who will buy that addon. Consequently the numbers become vanishingly small! E.g; Of the Linux users in the X-Plane community, how many of them were motivated to buy the CRJ-200? My point is .. that if Linux users want to make their presence felt, they need to organize and mobilize ... so when an addon appears that does support Linux, they can skew the stats in their favour by uniting/mobilising to make every purchase to count. This is the only way Linux users can provide a positive message that they are a purchasing power that requires consideration .. IMO.

Is this tool X-Plane compatible? It looks like it's for FSX!

I think it's a joke .. delivered dead-pan style

I feel your consternation my friend and I TRULY appreciate what the LES Team and X-Aviation are doing! Forget the negativity ... it's just squashed bugs on the windscreen on the long haul through a development cycle . You are ALL doing a bang up job .. no doubts in my mind and anyone who's attempts to hold you to a schedule is a fool! Don't fall for it ... Cheers, Kris P.

Same here mate!

C'mon fella's, obviously it will be ready when it's ready. I'm sure that psychological baggage (e.g. unnecessary guilt) is the last thing that we, would want the people who are making our toys to experience at this late stage of the game! I can guarantee that your collective existence is not in jeopardy because the SAAB is a tad later than you all expected!

Lol! Hey, I'm a hand-line specialist too.

It looks like you developers get paid too much .. with that kind of lifestyle!

OK, own up! Who's been spreading furfee's about me?

Now that's what I call a bombshell of a news item there Cameron! Excellent timing and brilliant content ... I think I've already said (multiple times) that I'm really looking forward to this plane.

Breathe Mario ... breathe ... time is just an illusion!

Similar to what they say in Queensland .... bewdy mate .. eh!
-
I'll be in down south (Armidale) over the weekend ... away from my flight rig. Obviously I'm more than a little tee-ed off by your lousy timing Cameron .. unless of course you wait to release the early part of next week ...
