Out of curiosity, what do you guys think is wrong with Steam?
-
Not needing the DVD just to run the simulator. Always have an up to date simulator without giving it a thought. Be able to download and install on other computers, if I'm say, at a friends house hours away who'd like to know what it's about, without me bringing the big bad computer case with me on the train. Or plane.. Chat in-sim with other pilots a heck of a lot easier than now. In the long run, perhaps this will make for a GOOD and reliable way of "multi player" without the need for 3rd party tools, port forwarding and sharing IP addresses.

So.. um.. Is there a plan for those of us who purchased on DVD to get a Steam key to activate there? That would be awesome. If not, I won't be purchasing it again just to get it on Steam.

Aviation related, for once. Something I'm tinkering with in between other things. A big task. 70 individual buildings and reference images is hard to get. But it's a fun project.
-
Not related to aviation. But still a fun thing to show off. I was recently hired on a job to do some visual effects on a few shots. I trained and practiced my skills for a while. Below is one of the tests. Last week the job was due. A total of five shots were made. Smoke on buildings in a city view, and the grand finale - a buidling exploding to bits. The challenges weren't on my side: ONE computer to do it all. Sim, render and compositing.I was not informed prior to the job that it would be mastered in 4K. HD would've made the job a LOT easier and much faster to complete.I had only three days to complete ALL the shots. That's ONE DAY for the grand finale shot, which was the hardest.I had to cheat a bit. The fluid dynamic sim was very low res, and had to be rendered asap. It still wasn't more than halfway through rendering the scene I had set up after I left work and came back 12 hours later, which was a huge surprise. (They have a monster computer) But here's the result of that shot (from 4-10 seconds). Someone else did all the other VFX. The plot is basically a super hero using an app to overcome different challenges.

Too bad it requires an account at Flightsim.com. Ignorant, lazy, whatever. I just don't want to make another account just for a couple of files.

You do realize this is a very old thread?
-
That depends on the region. There's different standards as far as I know. On the farm we've had three different kind of builds and sizes delivered with the fertilizer. But usually they came with this kind I remember the smaller ones had extra planks on the bottom like the ones shown in the renders above, while EUR pallets do not and are massive in comparison.

Custom PC, any final thoughts before purchase?

I've been using Windows 8 for about 6 months. Have nothing to complain about. The biggest concern for many is that the usual Windows Start menu. In Windows 8 it's a "full screen start menu", where you can place and reorder shortcuts and gadgets in whatever fashion you like. I actually like it. The usual desktop with windows and explorer and whatever is intact. The biggest visual difference is that everything is flat. No shading and fancy color effects. It looks very clean and easy on the eye. Best thing Microsoft has done in a long time for me. My short experience with Windows 8 has in general been more stable than Windows 7 on the same hardware. -
I have no idea how to deal with terrain in XP. Would be great to make Norway look a little more detailed. Terragen's got different tools. World Machine is for heigtmap/texture generation whereas Terragen can do animation and rendering too. So I could take what's made in WM into Terragen if I wanted, to create a nice render with lakes and so on.

I tried upping it to 8K resolution. Took a while to build. Almost 9 hours to be exact. But it added some nice subtle details. Compressed JPEG attached. If you want to see an uncompressed PNG.. 7MB. Click the image for full resolution, 3840x1302px!

You can't use tiled textures inside World Machine. You'll need to bring it over to CryEngine, Unreal Engine, Unity or any other 3D software, using "splat maps" in order to distribute different types of textures to different slope angles and heights. A splat map is R G B and Alpha in one image file, where you can tell the game engine or 3D app to distribute say R = Sand G = Grass B = Rock Alpha = something else The textures should be tileable, and will then repeat over the surface of the terrain, but will be visible only where any shade or hue of the color is present. And it's absolutely confusing in the beginning. I've had WM for one day now, but I really like to explore and try new things. I'll probably go for the upgrade to the pro version so I can utilize the future PC with 8 or 12 cores to the full potential.
-
The Basic version is restricted to 512x512 texture maps, which isn't a whole lot. To get details like the on I posted, you'll need bigger texture maps. I used 4096x4096 which took about an hour with all the devices I had going. I'm building the terrain in 8192x8192 now. Takes a lot of time. I'm very interested in finding a way to utilize splat maps from World Machine in LightWave. That would definitely up the quality of any terrain.-

It's a tool to design, generate and work with DEM data, and export different maps (height maps, color maps, ambient occlusion+++) for use in game engines and 3D animation.

I'm unemployed. I'm looking for someone to offer me a job so I can pay the bills. Doing new stuff when I'm bored (and sometimes, not always, that can result in creativity) helps me build a portfolio.
-
Not sure why this became only 480p, as it's rendered in 720p.. Something I did friday morning in a moment of boredom. Will be bringing this to a PR guy at a local cycle race and see if they want to do some more and better quality work for their website and possibly a live stream online.

Perhaps I should add the differences at night time. The lighting is dramatically better at night with HDR on.
-
If I could afford to get the Saab now, I would. But again; I think the CPU power would be the real difference.

This might be interesting for some of you ? http://forums.x-pilot.com/topic/5775-to-you-guys-asking-about-hdr-vs-non-hdr-performance/

CRJ 200 and Wilmington scenery from X-Aviation. A brief look at the visual qualities of the two rendering options - "normal" and HDR.
-
I've never had performance issues using the latest drivers and games, including simulators such as X-Plane. The issues arising might be graphical glitches or poor optimization which has nothing to do with the GPU. Don't worry. If you for should get an issue, you can roll back to an older driver.
-
I still cross my fingers they'll make the simulator driven or accelerated by either by CUDA or OpenCL. I see a lot of use with these two in professional video apps where processing needs to be done in real-time in order to deliver on time, in the highest quality, at frame sizes larger than you can imagine being used for film and video.

I don't understand why Windows 8 get so much bad press. There's absolutely no issues with games or X-plane for that matter. If you want Windows 8 instead of 7, no problem! You could also think of getting a liquid cooler. I got an Intel Liquid cooler, and I can barely-if at all-hear it. It's almost half the price of that fan you have set up too.
