Need help with development.

I am a new aircraft developer but I have been creating 3D objects for over 3 years and am VERY good at it now. There's just one problem: How do you create buttons in a 3d cockpit, and how do you tell it where to put different gauges, etc? If you could walk me through it it would be even better... anyways, I really want to create extremely detailed 3D cockpits for aircraft, so please help if you can.
