Flying_pig Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 I am thinking about upgrading to one of these cards soon and was wondering which one is better for programs like blender and x-plane Quote
krl Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 I believe the 7970 has specific issues with x-plane, wondering if they've been sorted out (last update was medio 2012).. Quote
Orcair Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 I like NVIDIA so GTX680. Cameron also has this card and he often says how well it works with X-Plane. Quote
sqrt(-1) Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 The issues are not necessarily with X-Plane. It is a driver issue, specifically OpenGL implementation. The Nvidia drivers have been much better than ATI's for Windows machines. So, for X-Plane, you would be more satisfied with the performance of the GTX 680. Quote
Flying_pig Posted February 9, 2013 Author Report Posted February 9, 2013 (edited) Ok, so i guess i'll have to pay $100 more and get the 680 now what manufacturer should i get it from evga gigabyte etc. Edited February 9, 2013 by mj12345 Quote
HarryCYUL Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 get the 680, I have a 670 3gb and a 680 2gb and they are amazing in xplane10. Quote
chris k Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 nVidia on Windows AMD/ATI on OSX, if you wanted to make a Hackintosh as the primary system. Quote
ktomais Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 (edited) nVidia has far better drivers in general, and support. I would go for the GTX680, AMD produces good cards on a technical level, but they lack support and compatibility as far as I know. Edited February 10, 2013 by ktomais Quote
sqrt(-1) Posted February 11, 2013 Report Posted February 11, 2013 AMD produces good cards on a technical level, but they lack support and compatibility as far as I know. ... only for OpenGL, which is what X-Plane uses. For DirectX applications, AMD is quite strong. Quote
larjeet Posted February 11, 2013 Report Posted February 11, 2013 I have been using AMD for years and have seen no problem with Xplane . My current Card is a Gigabyte 7870 OC . They always say that NVidia does OpenGL better but I have never had a problem . May be someone can let me know what I am Missing as far as OpenGL is concerned . As far as I'm concerned AMD works just fine with Xplane . Quote
niebieski Posted February 11, 2013 Report Posted February 11, 2013 I have just upgraded from GTX 580 to GTX 680 4GB (Gigabyte overclocked model GV-N680OC-4GD) and the card is awesome. For Blender you'll also want Nvidia card if you're using Cycles rendering engine. Quote

What has been stated often both here and at the .Org is that Nvidia OpenGL driver performance has been proven to be better on Windows machines, and for that reason my next flightsim rig will have an Nvidia GPU. If the performance of your AMD GPU is meeting your expectations, then by all means, enjoy it! Edit: Fixed a couple of typos... Edited February 11, 2013 by SqrtOfNegOne Quote
Tr182md Posted March 7, 2013 Report Posted March 7, 2013 Have been using older 5770 and just ordered a 7970 based on reviews stating better with triple monitors which is what I run. Hope I do ok! Quote
Flying_pig Posted April 3, 2013 Author Report Posted April 3, 2013 Decided to go with amd 7970 do to the fact that A. It's $100 dollors cheaper B. I own a render farm that now has a gtx 560 in it so as long as the card works fine in solid view mode I Don't care about rendering as Nvidia still handles that C. i Currently have a 560 I will see a boost in performance bad drivers or not Also I should mention that it currently is in the mail so good luck changing my mindHere's a link to the actual card i boughthttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125413Also i already have plans for my 550 TI and the games are heading to ebay Quote
Flying_pig Posted April 30, 2013 Author Report Posted April 30, 2013 Ok little update, Bad news: I have recieved to 7970's and both were DOA i have since requested a refund and am going to buy a nvida based card Good news: Turns out newegg lists their game coupons as seperate items when you buy your video card so neweg gave me $180 for my inconveniences also just learned that cycles doesn't support gpu rendering with amd cards so I really dodged a bullet by recieving 2 DOA cardsUnrelated: is it normal to receive two doa cards in a row from Gigabyte? Flying_pig Posted April 30, 2013 Author Report Posted April 30, 2013 Good because I really liked some of the Gigabyte 670's I was looking at Quote
Flying_pig Posted May 3, 2013 Author Report Posted May 3, 2013 Quick question does anybody here know how much faster EVGA's FTW cards compared to an open shroud cooler from asus to better take advantage of gpu boost as my case is overkill for what i have right nowHeres a link to the asus card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121707 Quote
Benedikt S. Posted May 3, 2013 Report Posted May 3, 2013 Spend the Money on an FTW Card, more Performance, better for X-Plane! And don't forget to buy 4GB RAM! Quote
sqrt(-1) Posted May 3, 2013 Report Posted May 3, 2013 If you were to compare the reviews of equivalently clocked 670s given the same amount of VRAM, you'll find the results to be within typical sampling error margins. There isn't a significant difference. Generally the support from EVGA and ASUS is considered pretty good. Just find the best deal you can. Quote
