No Mayan text has ever referred to the end of the world at the end of their calendar. It is the end of the current long count which began in 3114 BC. The equator of the Milky Way galaxy (Galactic Equator) and the path of the Sun (the Ecliptic) cross each other at exactly 11:11 am GMT on December 21, 2012. The Sun on the solstice will be almost perfectly aligned with the plane of the galaxy (the Milky Way galaxy). This precession of the equinoxes goes in a complete circle and happens only once every 26,000 years. According to the Mayans we are entering a new age ... evolving into the shift towards a more Eastern, or spiritualist, way of life. The Western way of life, and the worship of material goods, progress, and capitalism, has accelerated its way headfirst into battles and wars for hundreds of years. it is Time to Activate & Transform.Their civilisation did not end, unless you consider the invasion and conquest by the spanish. They did not vanished or disappeared, they still live and in large numbers, they don't build pyramids any more, now they build hotels. And the picture above is NOT Mayan, is the Aztec. The Aztec Calendar even though it has similarities has significant differences. The one depicted was actually used to count the passage of time in a 360 day cycle (plus 4 days out of time which were used for meditation and cleansing). The Mayan Sacred Calendar, which is the one being referenced for the supposed end of the world (end of time for them) is a smaller version that measures cycles of nature in a 13:20 ratio, this creates a 260 day cycle which is more related to lunar and solar activity, this in conjunction with the 360+4 calendar creates a 52 years cycle (of our gregorian calendar). The Gregorian Calendar was established in 24 February 1582 and with it's institution all other calendars were only kept for religious and ceremonial purposes (like the chines and the jew calendars). Before this date most civilisations counted the cycles of time in moon cycles (13 months of 28 days) which are more acurate in measuring cycles in nature. The calender consists of several digits, the largest being a b'ak'tun. at the start of the mayan long count, it read 13. 00. 00. (i think) and as the time went by, it slowly rotated, to 13. 00. 01, 13. 00. 02, much like the speed selection knob on the 727. in any case, this system mean that eventually, the counter would read 13. 00. 00 again, which is today that is why the mayans celebrated or made big news of this day, because it would be the day the long count calender reached the 13th b'ak'tun. so let's all celebrate the resetting of the Mayan long count calender 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Still, it's not first EoW and it won't be the last I suppose. There are still some 7 million Mayans about. Well,at least there was yesterday. To think about a more recent example...there was a whole bunch of people who thought "nobody in there right mind will be using this in the year 2000!" ...so they didn't bother putting the century in the dates of their computer systems.
