SWA4420 Posted March 21, 2013 Report Posted March 21, 2013 Wow, having just seen FIFI fly today @ KCMA, I'm so glad you're doing a B-29 for XPX! The progress shots look GREAT! Quote
Flying_pig Posted March 26, 2013 Author Report Posted March 26, 2013 (edited) Turns out there was also a Post war revision of the B-29 called the B-50 the only changes i could see were external fuel tanks and better engines so I've decided to make the B-50 Variant as well since it won't be that hard to make one here's some pictures of the external fuel tank and B-29 in general Also the Top Front and Right Views would be rendered But I ran out of Vram Edited March 26, 2013 by mj12345 1 Quote
clavel9 Posted March 27, 2013 Report Posted March 27, 2013 The B-50 had a larger vertical stabiliser and rudder than the B-29. Most of the other changes were structural as well as the upgraded engines and additional fuel tanks you already mentioned. The B-50D also had a revised nose with a single plexiglass dome replacing the individual panes of the earlier variants. Quote
Flying_pig Posted March 27, 2013 Author Report Posted March 27, 2013 (edited) The B-50D also had a revised nose with a single plexiglass dome replacing the individual panes of the earlier variants. you have NO idea how awesome it was to read that. Given the fact that modeling all those panes was a really big hassle for me, in fact i'm still not happy with the way they look. Also thanks for telling me about the rudder and elevator being bigger otherwise i would have probably never have noticed that. Edited March 27, 2013 by mj12345 Quote
clavel9 Posted March 27, 2013 Report Posted March 27, 2013 You can see the arrangement clearly in his picture. Boeing B-50 Bomber by big_pixel_pusher, on Flickr Quote

Flying_pig Posted April 15, 2013 Author Report Posted April 15, 2013 (edited) Redid the turrets and reduced the polygon count on them in the process. also I managed to find a reprint (well sort of reprint) of the training manual for a B-29 commander conatining B-29 CHECKLISTS! you can read it HERE Edited April 16, 2013 by mj12345 2 Quote
Flying_pig Posted April 16, 2013 Author Report Posted April 16, 2013 Today I was doing a render of one of the engines and managed to get this result not bad considering the engine has no materials applied to it 1 Quote
Zaffa Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 Love this, but isn't it a little too High poly for x-plane? 1100000 polys are really a lot! Quote
Flying_pig Posted April 18, 2013 Author Report Posted April 18, 2013 Actually no, though some parts of the plane are high poly i make sure that other parts are far less poly for example the engines bomb bay and cockpit are the three most intensive parts of the model equating to about 75-80% of the total amount of polygons however when you are in extireior view i can remove most of the cockpit detail and when you are in interior view i can remove the engines entirely and i can make a low poly version of the bombs in the bomb bay for the extirier view which makes my poly count actually pretty reasonable not to mention the elevators and wings contain less than 500 polygons each and the entire fuselage takes up no less than 600 Quote
Zaffa Posted April 18, 2013 Report Posted April 18, 2013 (edited) Great to head this. I just worried when i saw the blender screenshot Edited April 18, 2013 by Zaffa Quote
Flying_pig Posted April 20, 2013 Author Report Posted April 20, 2013 My BEST render to date.NOTE:lights added for effect and do not exist in real B-29 Quote
BWolf7 Posted April 21, 2013 Report Posted April 21, 2013 Very nice render! Love the lighting effect, the B-29 is looking great! 1 Quote
LA Posted April 21, 2013 Report Posted April 21, 2013 I'm always thrilled to see a B-29 project. Has been my favorite multi-piston aircraft. It helped knowing a gentleman who was a B-29 flight engineer, and later maintained one for a museum. It gave me a bit more access to the inside. I also met both pilots who helped the USA end WWII, with the B-29. I'm an old guy (born after WWII), but swear I flew one of these in my former life. A friend say's I was just a tailgunner...... Flying_pig Posted April 21, 2013 Author Report Posted April 21, 2013 Redid the nose section (again) finally made it one mesh this time (well sort of) unfortunately it's a bit high on the poly side. Here's a pictures showing a wireframe viewnice renderzoomed out versionAlso, LA do you happen to have pictures of the interior of the B-29? As I need more for the areas behind the engineers panel and in front of the pilot/copilot stations. 3 Quote
