No-DVD USB dongle?

I was under the impression I had seen with my own eyes that you could order a USB dongle for home use, so you don't need DVD1 inserted. I had accidentally forgot DVD1 at my own home, over two hours drive away.

Now I'm at my parents place for the holiday and, well, I can't fly. Having a USB dongle attached to my cluster of other dongles and USB drives would've been easier to remember to take with me.

I was shocked about the $750 price tag being the only choice. I'm not interested in a FAA approved boot sequence, nor do I need that.

Am I dreaming or did the option to purchase a USB dongle for home use exist just a few weeks ago?

I have one for 9x , but they have not made any for 10x. No idea if they will or not to run the home desktop version.

It's not true. Laminar will sell v10 non-commercial dongles for approx $50 (spring '12). Many developers are using them already. Ask Randy at info@x-plane.com

I think you can make it yourself. Just copy the contents of disk 1 to a usb stick.

Hmm if it's that simple, sure, I'll do that. Won't have the chance to test until January though. If anyone can test it and report back before that time..

Andrzej, I emailed Randy. He said they have no plans for such.

"There are no "retail use" keys (that is, only to unlock the sim, not to unlock any of the Pro features) at this time. Expect this (maybe) in about spring 2012 and for the retail key to be $50 or so.

You could also create a disk mounted image of the disc, works perfectly and very easy to do, at least on a Mac - not sure about windows.

MagicISO for Windows does the trick, I have a ISO of DVD 1 of X-Plane10, and MagicISO mounts it as D:/, works perfect, even still mounted after a reboot. For sure the way to go, saves leaving you DVD in the drive, and it spinning away.

As far as I am aware, USB keys are not on the slate. The developers, including myself, received the commercial level keys for use during beta pre-release phase. They were not the standard dongles.

Perhaps they had initially considered this over again, but last speaking I have had indicates no dongles in sight for the moment.

I'd be second! Maybe even first! I have two USB keys for 9.7. One that stays in my USB hub and the other goes with me in my laptop bag.
