  1. The problem is that on linux the updater/installer that they have on the x-plane.com site doesn't detect that I have X-Plane installed on my NTFS drive. When I tell it that I want to use the same location and install... I get an "X-Plane Already Exists" error. I'm thinking I'm missing some flag on my system or something.
  2. Hello - I'd like to give XPlane in Linux a try, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the installer to realize that I've already installed the whole world's scenery, and that I just need the bits that are different for linux vs windows. Is this possible to do? Or do I really need to have two different installs with a bunch of simlinks for the scenery going from the linux install to the windows install? Thanks
  3. 1. Yes, displays are dark 2. Windows 7 64bit 3. 2x Nvidia GTX 570 1280Mb (SLI) 3a. Nvidia 185.85
  4. I've been thinking about how scenery systems actually work, but I can't seem to figure out exactly how they do. It seems like the most common way to create terrain from scratch in a video game is via a height map, where black is low and white is the highest terrain on the map. You can create such height maps from USGS data that's freely available, so it seems like a reasonable approach... you'd just load the "next grid" as the plane approaches it and then unload the one behind you as you pass by. Does XPlane work like this... loading a grid of height maps and showing you the one you're currently inside? Is there a different way that this all works? I know this isn't really a "how to make scenery" question, but I've always wondered.. how does a flight simulator show accurate terrain for the real world without having to put a huge amount of stuff in memory. How does it all work?
  5. I'm probably going to pick this up to practice some IFR maneuvers with.. thanks for getting the VOR indicator fixed! Is that live update on X-Aviation at the moment?
  6. Hello - I always thought to myself.. oh, there's no way that this is actually what it sounds like in an airliner during the takeoff roll.. and then I saw this video. Check out the video from Vimeo.. Holy cow.. it does actually sound like that! (and it's a pretty awesome A330 video too!). Just a random thought for the day.. Going to be enjoying a flight in the CRJ tonight in my fresh copy of v10!
  7. You could model the river into OSM and replace the line river with a polygon river. In theory that would enable it to get into an upgrade at some point for you. Or maybe Austin et al will release a tool where you can import your own map data..
  8. I also get that error when I install. I ignored it and the plane runs fine...
  9. USPS is pretty bad about updating their tracking information. I wouldn't be surprised if once it left the US you didn't see any updates at al. I'd think with the holiday mail in full swing they have extra capacity right now, but it might further slow their tracking updates. I've had USPS show a package not delivered for days after I've had it in my hands...
  10. +1 same with mine. So the USPS shipping takes about a week to deliver?
  11. No worries at all. I updated the page regarding trips.. gives a bit of text there when we don't have anything to show. Slowly but surely. Gotta start promoting the site I think..
  12. I did a lot of work tonight trying to make the site easier to use. What do you think of the new Trips alert on the Airports page? I was trying to call out more attention to that. I also need to work on a landing page for the Trips page when there are no trips near you available. Something like "Help us get pilots near you involved" or something. I'm horrible at creative copy =\
  13. IFR ground school - fun! I did that two months ago. Good luck! I'll be working on it tonight. One thing that I'm also trying to figure out is the best way to make the site useful for people who are new to the site, and the first in their area. I should add a "find planes near ____" form like I've got for the trips, I think. Thank you for helping to beta test this site, and for all the feedback.
  14. Good point! Right now, once you've added the aircraft you have to go to it's information page in order to upload photos. I'll work on letting you upload photos from the initial form tonight.
  15. Hello folks! I've been working night and day on a project I'm calling SocialAero. Basically, it's a way for the public and pilots to link up and get up in the air. I'm a private pilot (working on my IFR cert), and one of the things that I wish was easier was finding people who just want to get up and fly around. It's expensive building hours yourself! I was wondering if anyone might give some feedback on the site. It's still quite young, there's no one using it yet.. so things can be changed! The site works based on your world location - so you'll only see things on the site if you're in or near Las Vegas. Feel free to add aircraft, etc to the site if you want to see how it works (try to make them real planes that can be rented from someone though). If you go to the trips page and search for Las Vegas, Nevada at the bottom, you can see a trip I put in to see sort of how that works. There's also a good amount of airport information imported into the site. KHND is an example for you. Anyway - I wanted to get your opinions, ideas for what would be cool, what you hate.. etc. Mind taking a look and helping out?
  16. So, of course - and I apologize for this - it's not doing it now. Every time I had flown the plane previous to this test flight it would shut down and "black out"... but not now. When it does it again, I'll post the logs. I haven't changed anything.. maybe it likes flying around in thunderstorms? I've never flown it in weather like that before.. hah
  17. Hello! I have been having a problem where the G1000 and engine shuts down a few seconds into flight, or will never start up if I start the plane "cold and dark". I've heard that this is most often due to Gizmo versions being out of sync.. I have nearly every X-Aviation plane - is that causing a problem? If so - how do I ensure that the CRJ has the proper version (I assume, the newest) - while the Corvallis has it's own older version and that they don't collide? If it helps, I used the installers for the installs and I've tried reinstalling everything. I'm pretty sure I'm running a new version of Gizmo - I have the little "drawer" over on the right side of the screen. Any tips would be great I can post logs if it'd help. --Matthew
  18. (watch it in HD!) is the source video. I ran across this video this morning, and wow.. I normally am not one to really like air to air videos - but this one is different. Amazing shots, and good relaxing music to go with them. It's amazing how something so big, so heavy, can just float through the air so gracefully.
  19. Now I want to know what that thing is that you're working on that no one has mentioned yet...
  20. Thank you for the response. I did want to get the Lufthansa livery.. though I do admit to mis-reading the posts before me. I was at GoogleIO last week, and so sort of skimmed them. What should I do in order to download the CRJ again? It almost seems like on your end I should be able to, but on my end the link gets filtered out the HTML somehow. I'm happy to help in any way I can.
  21. So.. I just uninstalled the CRJ, and went to my account where I cannot download it again. I show 2 remaining downloads, a note that the link expired May 12, and no way to download another copy. I see my CRJ order, #4210, I click "View". I see that I originally downloaded it on 05/08/2011, and a line that says: Take Command!: CRJ-200 Link expires: Thursday 12 May, 2011 2 downloads remaining And a "Back" button. That's it. No links. =\ I tried this in Chrome 11 as well as Internet Explorer. I've actually been trying to download the other planes that I bought before as well - I built a new computer and didn't back them up like an idiot - I've tried contacting via the Contact form (twice) and even direct messaging Cameron here. No luck =\ I never got, either in my main email, or in my junk, an email about any update to the CRJ, just as an aside. I was not signed up for the spamy sounding "announcements" lists, but I was signed up for the Product emails that I've bought in the past. I'm guessing something is messed up with my XAviation account =\
  22. Sorry if this derails this thread.. could anyone give me a link to a good "how to clean up bad scenery" type document? I don't mind doing the work, but I'd like to know what I'm getting myself into.. I've never done any work on XP scenery. (I deleted OpenSceneryX and am reinstalling it as I type)
  23. Hmm, when I run the installer it says all is well with the opensceneryx install.
  24. That was spot on.. with lower scenery rendering I'm able to fly around just fine. Too bad I can't max it all out =p
  25. Ill try setting the scenery lower and flying around the area
