Hi Greg, Glad you liked KPVD and thank for the kind words. So you made the default global airport?? Thanks for that, it was well done, and was great staring point! As far as modeling tools go, I use sketchup and of course marginal's excellent sketchup2xplane plugin. For really complex curvy stuff, I may use rhino, or 3dsMax or even autocad, but it all winds up back into sketchup for texturing and export. For about 98% of what i need model, i can do in sketch-up. It's very intuitive and great place to start dabbling. I tried using blender, but i really struggle with the interface I'm still plugging away on KIND among other things. _Chris

Which plug-in / workflow are you using?

Just an update to let you all know that works continues on this and our other projects (VHHH, KJAC). I've done most of the modeling of the concourses, including some interior work. With these huge expanses of glass so prevalent in today's modern airport design, looking over the glare shield into an empty box kinda would take away from the immersion factor. Still very early WIP (with temporary textures): Exterior: Tug Underpass (too low for trucks): The apron lighting "tilts" with the building: Holdrooms: Get some shopping in while you wait: Legs tired? take the moving walkway!

Man that is a bummer, I really tried everything i could think of to debug it. I will definitely look at it further! In the meantime I have since joined ABSim as a developer and this is now an official AeroBridge Project. With our combined experience in making scenery, I am hopeful we will not have a repeat of the crashes with KPVD.

Looks awesome! Love the title treatment.

Worked a bit more on the Main Terminal Building. The roof is going to need some optimization...the mesh is way too heavy.... but I did get the roof edge simplified enough to the point where i am happy. The best part about this building is that it is a mirror image of itself! I only have model half and then flip it.

You got it!!! KIND voted the "best airport in North America for 2013"

So, against my better judgement, I've decided to start another airport Any guesses as to which one? HINT: it's ICAO code is an adjective. Veeeeerrrry early WIP:

I don't think UltraWX does anything at all to art controls, it just injects weather. In the docs it recommends using SMP and Fly with LUA to get the look in the screen shots.
-
I moved it to 5, and it seemed to be OK, but I was flying a different plane (CRJ200)...it could be very specific to the plane...not sure.

Very cool indeed. Well it seems to work well. But the weather was extreme where I was flying today. Yes, there were storms in area in real life, but i don't think they were this extreme....my 727 was knocked out the air twice, like blown upside down, completely unrecoverable. I wasn't in a deep stall or anything either. The poor thing looks like it was being bent in half from the outside. Winds said about a 20k crosswind, turbloc was at .5. Now I can't tell if it was that weather engine, or my rookie abilities with the 727, but once i went back to the default x-plane weather engine, "downloading" real weather, things went smoothly. looking at the docs, I think i need to move the challenging weather factor more to the left then the default 10

Picked up the FJS 727 over the weekend. Amazing plane, I love it. En-route over the Altantic KPHL-KPVD. Was going fine until i lost engines 2 and 3 10.25, SMP, FJS721

Did you guys ever get this figured out? A few people have had the same issue with my scenery. Sent from my SGH-T769 using Tapatalk

Ok, it is not completely done to my satisfaction, but I decided the pull the trigger an post it anyway. I'll continue sprucing it up, and I still need to add the ground traffic, but that will come in v1.5 It's up at the org and pending here at x-pilot. Thank you everyone for the words of encouragement and the feedback! -Chris

File Name: KPVD - T.F. GREEN INTERNATIONAL File Submitter: czoog File Submitted: 19 May 2014 File Category: DSF Scenery Packages X-Plane Version(s): X-Plane 10 This is my first attempt at creating an airport scenery pack. I choose KPVD for several reasons, but above all for its size and sophistication. I felt a small “full size” airport would be interesting to create, and not too overwhelming to complete in a reasonable time (took about 5 weeks). While it’s not my home airport (KPHL), I have flown into it several times as a passenger, and have always loved its ease of use and it’s proximity to Boston, MA. Being my first airport, I had much to learn, and thanks to the posts of others on the various forums (X-pilot, AvSIM and the .org) and Ben’s work on the x-plane development blog, I was able to absorb an astounding amount of info about X-plane development, so thanks to you all! Also very special thank you to Marginal, whose excellent tools I have relied on so heavily to complete this project. I’ve done my best to optimize the scenery, but it is very detailed and contains many custom objects, you will need a decent computer to run it well. This scenery come as two packs. The first is required and contains the airport and buildings. An optional but highly recommended package contains the photo real underlay. These .15m orthophotos are very high res 4k tiles and there are about 12 of them, so you will likely need little more than 1gig of VRAM, but if you have got the system, they look great. I have done some editing so that the change to x-plane default scenery is not so abrupt. Also note, that this project was built for X-Plane 10.25, and relies on HDR for night lighting. I am certainly open to feedback, and I expect some bugs but hopefully not many. I hope you enjoy using it as much as I did making it. Please see the PDF for additional information. Requires: · OpenScenry X · RU Library · R2 library · Autogate plug-in by Marginal THIS IS PART ONE OF A TWO PART SCENERY PACK. If you want the photo-scenery, please go here: Click here to download this file

Wow, very nice work there, I love the interior! Unfortunately i do have basically the same workflow, you still need to use that same texture file. i typically model in areas of the same material, then break them up if i have too based on image scale and repetition if needed (eg bricks). I also try to "bake" in some AO by adding it to the texture, by hand painting in some shadows, etc. I would love to actually bake the ambiet occlussion in 3dsMAX and then use a UVW unwrap to get the texture file, but i have not been able to do that yet. One thing is if I have a really good photo of something, I won't model in the detail, and if i don't.... I'll model it in and try to "color" the objects based on the material (making color patches in the png). If you want I can send you the sketchup file for the old term building, and you can see how I did the textures if it helps at all. Not sure if its anything you don't already know based on your work, though. I'm surprised the lights are so hard in Blender, I would think they would be accounted for in one of these plugins. Like you said Marginal's plug-in has made it soooo easy in sketch-up. So how do you do it now...Place a helper or something in blender to get the XYZ coordinated then hand code it into the OBJ file?
-
Thanks krogerfoot. I agree, texturing is the worst The old terminal is Sketch-up, I am not very good with blender yet. The light are actually named lights, I found the building uplight in the lights.txt and tried it out (you can see it in the screenshot). Worked perfectly, got lucky on that one. I find it difficult to use Lit textures on buildings, beacuse of the shear size of a typical building...it's tough to get lights lined up, unless you really plan it out well, which i did not, ha

Amazing images! Truly incredible what can be accomplished!

I am sure you guys are getting sick of all these updates, but...I am having too much fun with the photo-scenery I am still adding little details here and there (new segmented circle) combined with the orthophoto's things are looking pretty realistic: I've just about finished up the backside of the north concourse: I am going to have to crop the photo's at the road...looks a bit weird like this: Dusk is the best light Good night from PVD!
