Simmo W Posted September 4, 2010 Author Report Posted September 4, 2010 I see my old bud Kiofka's here too! Thanks to him for some tips he gave me for the scenery. Jeeze I hate WED! I just don't use it enough...So after forensic investigation of LESA, and heaps of trial and error today, I finally got some more subtle textures onto the daytime aprons and taxiways, as well as worked out how to paint on decent looking lighting on the ground textures. Thankyou to Javier for inspiring me to get better! Now I'm stuck - I'd love to know how to make night lighting textures on the taxiways/runways, but just couldn't work it out. Javier and others I notice use an .obj file, flat on the surface, but with sketchup I just can't work out the scale. How do you scale say a 100m stretch of runway and apply the textures without going Wacko? Can you still use a draped polygon somehow, as I did with these day shots? I went max with photoshop & the roof textures on the lineshack, very pleased with the result and not fps hit (well, with Jasons great T6x at least, smooth as silk). Quote
Simmo W Posted September 4, 2010 Author Report Posted September 4, 2010 One more for good luck - a close call, I hope I didn't scrape what is possibly the most beautiful livery on the planet... Quote
OlaHaldor Posted September 4, 2010 Report Posted September 4, 2010 Sure looks like a busy airport! You should be able to add night textures to a .pol by adding "_LIT <filename>". Haven't tried it myself though. Will try this on the Alicante scenery when I get there. Quote
Oliver Posted September 4, 2010 Report Posted September 4, 2010 Looks Great Simon! I'd love to fly there! Quote
Simmo W Posted September 4, 2010 Author Report Posted September 4, 2010 Thanks Oliver! it's available at the.org (and you can vote for it for scenery of the month if u like!)I'll post this texture update tomorrow if I get time, they really make a difference.Ola, yeah I tried that, I wish it was that simple. The underlying Tarmac dominates and stops the lighter texture from showing..might be some scenery group layer setting, really not sure Quote

Simmo W Posted September 4, 2010 Author Report Posted September 4, 2010 hope u enjoy, and as I say the lineshack and better textures should go up today. hehe, sound like Goran! but without the skills.. Quote
Simmo W Posted September 8, 2010 Author Report Posted September 8, 2010 good to see more scenery chatter! All bow to the almighty Draped Polygon!A new scenery review just posted to our Blog, but I was embarrassed with Chip's review of my KMPI! Since I've now shown Chip how he can adjust the texture files, he's getting the scenery bug too - we'll announce our new collaborative project very soon. he's the ex-pilot/draughtsman so his renderings should be sweet..http://xplane10.wordpress.com/2010/09/08/scenery-review-our-own-others/ Quote
cw7 Posted September 24, 2010 Report Posted September 24, 2010 An interview with Eric at RealScenery has been posted at:http://xplane10.wordpress.com/ Quote
Simmo W Posted September 27, 2010 Author Report Posted September 27, 2010 I only completed the western hangar complex, but when you see it - it's huge, mammoth even! Chip built the hangars, with my usual tweaking and adjustments. I'm playing with AC3D, but have to admit that after getting quite quick with Sketchup texturing, it better be majorly improved for me to give up SU.Still humming at 30fps, in C74's BX430 chopper. Simmo W Posted December 29, 2010 Author Report Posted December 29, 2010 X-Aviation's storage shed complete.Just the VERY fiddly touches happening now. Jeeze that last 5% takes the longest, if things aren't to look comical. Quote
Oliver Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 Awesome work Simon! Love the shed! Quote
Simmo W Posted December 31, 2010 Author Report Posted December 31, 2010 My most satisfying texturing effort yet.Hopefully you don't need to use it in 2011. 30 mins to 2011 here, HNY to All! Quote
Simmo W Posted January 22, 2011 Author Report Posted January 22, 2011 Goofy screenshot of the day, experimenting with .for forest specification. Whoops.. Quote
Kaphias Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 Hi Simon,Do you still use google sketch-up? I think it would be great if you wrote a little tutorial or made a video of how you create your scenery… right now I think we have a distinct lack of tutorials for sketch-up because it's only used for scenery design. As it's probably the easiest to use application for scenery design, it would seem to be a natural starting point for those of us wanting to try making our own stuff. Would you be up for trying a tutorial? Quote
Simmo W Posted January 22, 2011 Author Report Posted January 22, 2011 Good Idea Kaph, chip has been onto me for awhile for one. But I haven't been in the condition to do it until now, but I have to kill KMMH first, and before the MASSIVE LFPN starts. What aspects are u interested in? I assume how to apply textures compatible with xplane? There are many good video tutes for basic s.u. use, but few for xplane application. In case everyone is wondering, no, it's crap for aircraft design. Quote

There are many good video tutes for basic s.u. use, but few for xplane application.Texture application would be great and is most definitely the most difficult part of sketch-up, though I would like to see the whole process, along with some hints or tips you may have that you have learned form having many hours in the program. Again a video would be wonderful, it wouldn't even have to be narrated. I can only speak for myself of course, but I learn very well just by watching... and sketch-up is simple enough that one could figure out the "why" by themselves. I don't know how long it took you to make something like the X-Aviation shed you posted earlier, but that seems like it would be ideal for a tutorial.Thanks. Quote
Simmo W Posted January 23, 2011 Author Report Posted January 23, 2011 Exactly what I guessed you wanted Kaphias, good, so I'll do it.Oh dear, do I ever FLY in xplane? Between scenery, videos, blog work, not often enough! A broad hobby at least. I must be sick, I get a real buzz when a new building or grass looks good. Quote
Kesomir Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 In the past two years I've logged untold hours at my VA developing the new website, doing repaints etc, but very few actually flying.Probably holds your interest longer this way I think. Quote
Simmo W Posted January 26, 2011 Author Report Posted January 26, 2011 Ok, enjoy your flight over the new grass/flowers! This is the link to the instructions & example files for 'growing' ;D grass Quote
Kesomir Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 definitely looks better from the fixed cam than from the cockpit. Quote
UH-60 Blackhawk Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Not to detract from the amazing quality of the grass, but that is some smoooooooth heli flying! Quote
Simmo W Posted January 27, 2011 Author Report Posted January 27, 2011 Ha, until I landed! That's C74's 206, a smooth handler, did my first oil rig landing in her. Quote
Simmo W Posted February 8, 2011 Author Report Posted February 8, 2011 It's cooked, eat it here.Glad that's over! Next... Quote
