LED DC3, Swissair, wip

This is another livery-paint for the LES DC3 i'm working on.

It is one of the early Swissair liveries, which are one of my really

favorites with their overall bare metal skin, reduced lettering and

the red/white swiss-cross on the fin.

Although i'm aware that real reflections on a shiny bare metal skin

can't be exactly reproduced, i'm trying to give it the appearance of that.

I'm still checking out with some wrapped pictures of landscape, modified with

distortion-filters, layers of lighter and darker metal sheets and some detailed

painting by hand.

That's one of the reasons i did the work with the detailed rivets and joints,

as just for a bare metal skin these determine the appearance a lot i think

– and i wanted to have it as realistic as i could get it.

Thanks for your reply, appreciate that.

I looked for your MD 82 on the .org - looks nice - on Zurich Airport, i suppose.

Exciting to hear, that your grandfather flew that aircraft,

think i'll dedicate it to him, once work is finished.

Maybe you could answer me a question, concerning the colours

of the interior. There are a few good photos on the ETH-Bibliothek to

be found of the HB-IRD of the cockpit and the cargo-cabin.

But they are black+white, so one can only assume what colour the interior had.

Think it could be grey, or as the airplane was bought from the USAF and

used as a freighter, the original colour - probably military green- was left

as it was. Would be nice if you could help or had any information about that.

keinen flckr-account (und möchte mich auch nicht anmelden).

Ich konnte aber auf der allgemeinen flickr-seite viele DC3 Bilder finden.

Fotos von Kabine und Cockpit der DC3 im Verkehrshaus Luzern wären tool!

Ich bin mir aber nicht sicher ob der Innenraum zugänglich ist- auf Fotos ist

in der Tür eine Acrylscheibe montiert.

Thanks very much.

Unfortunately i didn't find much time during the last weeks to get on with it.

Due to your hint, i took a trip to the DC3 on exhibition at Munich Airport, which made me

revise the pattern of rivets and platelines. So progress is mainly in the details at this time.

Besides checking out a beta-programm for creating normals on the mac (reviewed in the forums)

and looking what can be achieved with it.

Looking forward to continue during the christmas-weeked,

will keep you informed and post some further screenshots.

i guess i'ts a airplane still flying,

obviously operated by swissair

as it's crowded with passengers on most of the seats.

Did you fly with it?

So i'm still workin' on it, and there's still a lot to be done.

I used to be part of a group of people that tried to run again the Swissair. HB-ISC was unfortunately not holdable and sold again. Hugo Matys is the current owner and the aircraft is based in St. Stephan.

thanks for your support, really appreciate that. Pictures of the actual HB-ISC would be great.

I read, the airplane was brought to the USA to get a US-registration there,

in order to avoid actual tightened EU-regulations that would make it uneconomical

to operate the airplane here further more. So is it back in Switzerland now and still flying there?

As pointed out above, the livery i'm planning to reproduce will be the HB-IRD, operaded by Swissair in the late 1940s. I think it fits the LES-model very well with it's oldstyle cockpit-configuration, such as the Sperry-autopilot.

But maybe another livery of the actual airlplane will follwoe later on.

Leen de Jager made a wonderful livery of the HB-IRD still in the Classic Air colours, with the blue Alrodo-paint all over the left side.

Yes, N431HM  (Formerly HB-ISC) is flying around Switzerland, mainly for airshows.It is privately owned. I have no idea if the aircraft is flying on a regular basis.

it's been some time, and i'm still working on the Swissair-livery. Almost finished the exterior, maybe with some little things to be done like transitions between fuselage and wings. Will then move to the interior, cockpit and (cargo-) cabin. So i wanted to show some screenshots of what it looks at this time.
