teeps Posted January 8, 2010 Report Posted January 8, 2010 Flying around my home town I note that x-plane doesn't really give a very good picture in terms of urban areas versus rural areas. In FS2004 I'd look for a new landclass to sort this out, but what is the x-plane equivalent? Thanks,Mark Quote
Cameron Posted January 8, 2010 Report Posted January 8, 2010 Mark,Currently there is no product that does what you are seeking unless you go about making it on your own, however, I can tell you a landclass-like product is in the works. Quote
teeps Posted January 9, 2010 Author Report Posted January 9, 2010 OK thanks for the info Cameron. I'll wait and see what comes out then ...Cheers,Mark Quote
Alex_Michael Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 Hi there,Will the x-plane landclass be any similar to this demonstration of this FSX payware scenery? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrXsDDdWv2Y&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrXsDDdWv2Y&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrXsDDdWv2Y&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="425" height="385"></embed></object>CheersAlex Quote

There is certainly no harm in it. ;D And yes, I do have this FSX payware scenery. It's very good, and gives me an urge to take the real plane up there someday. I'm only a few hours away in a neighboring state. At the same time, X-Plane is great at replicating mountainous areas across other parts of the mountain west, where scenery designers for either sim haven't reproduced the area by hand.LA --- X-Plane9/FSX/FS9/N328SL Quote
MdMax Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 Hi all !Yes you can make your own scenery, but you can also make sure that OpenStreetMap is complete and looks good near your home town.OpenStreetMap is for maps what Wikipedia is for the encyclopedia. It's not only free, but it has an open licence allowing you to edit and export to the format you want. This must be confirmed, but I have read somewhere that X-Plane 10 may use OSM data. This would be great ! Forests, villages, roads and rivers would be at the right place near my home town.http://www.openstreetmap.org/http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/FAQBut you don't need to wait for X-Plane 10. Today you can use XPOSM.Happy flying ! Quote
Cameron Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 Hi there,Will the x-plane landclass be any similar to this demonstration of this FSX payware scenery?Hi, Alex,Still to be announced. I can tell you that the detail of the mesh is multiple times higher than what you get with stock X-Plane, but until I have more stuff ironed out (this is more or less a product of my own), then I won't be saying much. Soon, though! Quote
MdMax Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 A good mesh is important, but it changes only the terrain elevation.Did someone test this tool ?http://www.x-scenerybuilder.com/home.html Quote
Cameron Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 A good mesh is important, but it changes only the terrain elevation.Did someone test this tool ?http://www.x-scenerybuilder.com/home.htmlI've played around with it. Rather good for personal use, but for a large, widespread area it's a tedious task and not very FPS friendly. Quote
inktomi Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 I've wanted to try out OpenStreetMap for some time now, but am too lazy to install GCC on my mac just to try out a scenery package. This may be slightly off topic - but can anyone who uses it post some screenshots and feedback? Is it significantly better for VFR flight? Quote
