azpdec Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 I am new to xplane and learning as I go. I am flying the 172 while I figure it out. Does anyone know how to expand the GPS to a readable, workable level. The closest I can get is in the 3D cockpit view, but the controls are hard to control because everytime I move the mouse to make and adjustment, the view on my screen moves. Does x-plane have a way to expand the gps screen the way it can be done in FS. (For the record, I am not a FS convert. I tried a friends and noticed the ease in working the gps because the unit can be expanded and left in that mode during flight.) Thanks. Quote
tkyler Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 This is not a feature that xplane currently has in it's default configuration. I very much agree with the difficulty of operating the GPS. Whenever I use my mouse to move stuff in 3D....get the mouse near where you want it and then tap the 'q' or 'e' key a bit. What this does is wrestle the camera control from the mouse and gives it to the keys...specifically 'q', 'e', 'w', and 's'. By tapping q or e...you basically tap the camera slightly to the left or right, but then you'll be able to use the mouse to mess with the GPS. At this point, you either use the keyboard to move the view..or you hit "CTRL-o" to once again have the mouse control the view. It seems like a lot of hassle, but the best I can tell you is that after a while, you get used to it. it's not ideal, but until more navigation friendly options come around, we do what we can.It seems though...that very recently a feature was put in xplane...so that when you use the mouse to move around the view...that whenever you press the mouse button down, the camera stops moving the view while the mouse button is down. This lets you change things in 3D without moving the view. When you release the mouse button, the view is again controlled by the mouse. I am not sure which version of xp this is in, or if it's an option..I do know that it works for me in 9.40. Quote
Flyingtak1 Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Did you guys find the way to enlarge the GPS? I also new to X-plane and I thought same thing as you.I am trying to enlarge the GPS using the plane-maker. It is not perfect yet, but my 172sp has 150% big size GPS on 2D cockpit now. I haven't find the way to modify the background illumination image yet, it is still original size, and 3D cockpit was destroyed... probably it is possible to fix somehow. You'd better to make a copy file of 172SP for modification, if you try this. Quote
JB_XUSA Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 Flyingtak you are probably on the best track. Thats the one thing that x-plane does poorly. It doesn't really give the user full control over the view and zoom of things. Some have figured this out and I would try downloading planes from the org to see if you can find one with an enhanced view and maybe try to see if it helps you out. I'm not sure if in x-plane you can change the values of the gauge in the 2d and then get a different resolve in the 3d. Try it. Its been awhile since I messed with Planemaker. I'm not sure if the new version is supporting anything like that at this time.Oh and when you upscale the GPS the whole thing should get bigger including the screen, not just the controls.JB Quote
bjbeix Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 If you can get the plane trimmed to fly level, and you are flying with a joystick, you should be able to use the arrow keys to move to the center of the cockpit and then zoom in using the + key. Otherwise I use the same procedure on the ground, if you are having trouble trimming the aircraft, pause the sim and do the above. At least that is what I have been doing, unless I didn't understand the question.BJB Quote

Some freeware, some payware.Unfortunately, they are only usable in 2D, and you need an external monitor.Free: http://ross-park.net/xgps/Pay: http://www.reality-xp.com/flightsim/gns530-xpl/index.html-Jason Quote
garrettm30 Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 As for external monitors, you can pick up the old CRTs for cheap. I got one at Goodwill for $14, and I use it to show all my navigation charts. I love it. Quote
lepilot Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 I wonder if anyone knows where i could get a working plane version of the garmin 430-530, by working i mean rnav approaches can be loaded. Quote
OldAirmail Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 I'm still so new that I'm embarrassed to ask this, but is anyone working on drivers for the DesktopAviator.com GPS Panel - Model 2450B ($228)? I know that there are others that cost a lot more, and they probably do have X-Plane drivers. I just can't spend $480+ to get one. And while I'm very good at some things, programming isn't close to being one of them. I have most of the Saitek panels and with a bit of searching I found something that was supposed to let them work with X-Plane. I had no luck with it though, and gave up. Quote
