Generator fail

I'm doing a cold and dark start and when I get to the point in the start engine procedure where it says verify standy for the generator and click on gen I get a gen failed message. The startup procedure seems pretty straight forward but I can't figure out how to fix this.

The generator fail message would display if the engine isn't currently running. Does the message persist post-start?

I think I found the problem. I moved the throttle slightly forward and the gen fail message disappeared. The prop was spinning, but I may have been close to or in Beta range.
