OlaHaldor
Some times I just model to kill some time and test new techniques, or maybe just a concept. I'll make this thread as a showoff or a collection for inspiration if you'd like. First up: a huge office building.

OlaHaldor
One more. This time presenting the modeling process with it's trials and errors instead of a render.[vimeo]15559014[/vimeo]
Goran_M
Maybe we should have a "modeling screenshots" thread in the 3D forums.
nimi09
OlaHaldor I realy like your work.I started the terminal building from Bremen - Germany, a year ago. but i stoped modelling because i don't know the real hight of the buildings and lack of information about the gates - i want to build it as real as possible.here is a screenshot - modeled with blender 2.
OlaHaldor
Wow, looks nice. Gotta look out for the smoothing there though. Have you used Bing Maps? Zoom in a little and use "Birds eye" view. It can give some more details, but not all. It comes in handy!I've never known exact height myself. Buth LEMU and LEAL were modeled based on what I saw and scale in relation to other things, like planes. I could see a B737 next to a gate. Fine, I dug up some info about height on different places of the plane, and compared it to my model, then adjusting accordingly. It's not perfect, it may be tedious and can cause problems - BUT it's a step forward.
-TheoGregory
There's actually a easier way than that providing you have some side on pics. Model the base against the image. Measure it. Then count the units, x or y, and compare them to the 'z' units. most terminals are maybe 5:1 to 8:1...Its how I do my buildings but its quite difficult to describe through text
OlaHaldor
I understand what you're writing there. I've hardly come across images of the terminal in profile though.Something I've usually done is use Google Earth to measure width and length, then adjust height and compare it to the height of known airplane types I see in the perspective views. -TheoGregory
Hmm I have seen quite a few photo's that show at least some part of a terminal that you can match to Google earth. It doesn't have to be the whole side profile. But when it comes to scenery. If it looks to scale, no-one will complain. Just don't make your terminal the size of Big Company Inc
Simmo W
Scenery work= tedious, never a truer word said!So Theo, what sceneries have u done, would love to check them out
nimi09
yeah, i used Bing. but i would like to go much more into detail. I miss some side on pics, would love to do it like that. 'till now i don't know how to texture it, because the bings bird's eye view doesent provide good texture quality.

Simmo W
Oh well, maybe you'll do some 10 stuff! What u can do to a cockpit can be done to an airport.
nimi09
the terminal building of a small airport in the north of europe.in the process of texturing it right now.
OlaHaldor
Good! But I'm not sure about the rounded edges. It's not really necessary. Adds more polygons, and won't do much good except giving the GPU more to chew on.Like the detail with one of those whatever-it-is leaning onto the wall, to the right there.
