Newbie question

I know from various reading that SkyMaxx Pro renders it's own cloud formations, but I'm wondering if it uses any of the default XP11 cloud textures contained within the X-Plane/resources/bitmaps/world/clouds folder?

I previously had been playing around with various HD Cloud textures, and after reinstalling SMP I've found that once above the clouds my FPS drops from 25-35 down to an unhealthy 13-15 using SMP setting set to Fast clouds.  I also don't notice a difference between Solid status or Broken Status when switching in the settings.  Does SMP use it's own cloud textures exclusively or could my HD clouds textures in the XP folder be having an influence? Should I reset the XP textures to their default resolution?
