  1. I am planning to release it all at once (more or less ... I hope more) .... at least thats my current plan. But neither is this a small/easy thing - as you can imagine - which includes many hundred hours of computation time and also managing the roll out itself is not simple (bringing 60-80 Gbytes on the net is still not a trivial task).
  2. Then you are correct in saying, 10.25 is not so much for you (but neither would it hurt).
  3. Hi Cameron, I have listed it some time ago here http://forums.x-pilot.com/topic/5341-x-plane-10-hd-mesh-v2-preview/ Effectively (to bring it up to date), I expect to cover this: USA (complete)Canada (I think everything south of 60N ... the rest I will decide on case-by-case basis)AlaskaEurope (complete)And this will bring us already somewhere around 60-80 GBytes I think ....
  4. It depends ... if you are interested in DSF re-cuts, especially my upcoming HD Mesh Scenery v2 (in about 4-6 weeks), then you might be interested in 10.25 (as its a prerequisite) ...
  5. And to add to the big zoo: I am on OpenSUSE since 7-8-9 years (and all the time run X-Plane on it: XP8/XP9/XP10) ...
  6. Yes, but this was not the only reason (they even told me to prepare and get myself a windows installation .... just in case). The Linux porting efforts helped them a lot in the long run with their mobile porting .... so it payed off quite well (even if indirectly). And by the way, the Linux porting was mostly done by an "external" guy ... Oh, and just as another side note (yes, this is very very special and nothing which one could use for generalization ...) ... the kind of scenery work I do (with many open source tools, scripting etc.) fits really really well in the Linux environment (I think, many of the things might have been a bit more cumbersome on Windows).
  7. Do you guys know the Humblebundle (pay as much as you want game bundles) Indie Games sales: https://www.humblebundle.com/ (yes, I have bought most of them, as I find this is a cool idea and many of the games are good too) Now there are statistics about previous / ongoing bundles: http://cheesetalks.twolofbees.com/humble The interesting thing is, that they usually have far more than 1% Linux users (I looked at the number of packages, not just the price - because the Linux users pay much more on average than the Windows users). They usually go around 5-6% Linux users, but some of the bundles went even as high as 9-10% ... So yes, its still not mainstream .... but the niche is growing ...
  8. All of my scenery work (and the flying too) was done under Linux ... Ever since X-Plane 8 came out and was the first commercial sim supporting Linux (that was the time when I deleted Windows from my HDD). PS: me working with Linux only was an additional factor for Ben Supnik to continue the Linux support (which was questioned for a short time when they moved from XP8 to XP9)
  9. Looks really good ... and this might be an important milestone scenery in X-Plane, because so many people would like to - finally - have some large cities covered by custom scenery (which is quite common in FSX nowadays ... but rare in X-Plane ... even though X-Plane is a perfect platform for this type of scenery ... but of course, its a lot of work to create).
  10. And because others asked: yes, these screenshots already use the new textures!
  11. Hi guys, Yes, STILL NOT A RELEASE but at least some new screenshots - and proof that this project is alive - from Canada which received a very nice landclass update over the last weeks which will make it a worthy addition in the HD Mesh v2 regions! You can check the pictures out here: https://picasaweb.google.com/101666907909842492197/XPlane10HDMeshV2CanadaPREVIEW For the final (I don't even dare to say, but I now really really hope for this autumn) release I am still waiting for a few things to happen: X-Plane 10.30 needs to become available, as it will bring a quite large set of texture updates and a few important new terrain types which the HD Mesh relies on. Without this, it won't work. Some final code changes in the scenery generator are in the makings which - I hope - will further improve the cities (but I don't want to tell too much)And some final data tweakings (but most of this is now done - thats why I can showcase Canada)And because of the postponed release I will also do one more complete OSM data import for the entire project in about two weeks (around the first days of October), so who ever wants to do some improvements in OSM, then this might be a good time to do so ... I would also repeat (before you ask) the planned coverage: Europe (this time, entire Europe)USA (complete)AlaskaCanada (possibly not all of it, but definitely the South and West ...)
  12. Jim, here is part two :-) (we ended up somewhere else than originally planned, but it we did not regret)
  13. Hi Jim, My first trip is over ... and it was ... quite nice (even if weather was far from perfect):
  14. Wow, now you surprise me Jim ... I never thought that my pictures can have this "effect" :-) but of course I am glad to hear. I really hope, that my plans will work in August, because if the do, then they might yield some more, nice pictures.
  15. Hi Jim, I followed your trip - at least a little bit - on your facebook account, and it definitely looked like a good one ! For me its also always a joy to see impressions from other mountain ranges (I love mountains) than our European Alps ... as it shows the great diversity of the mountains around our planet. With a little luck (well its planned, but life has always some uncertainties) I will spend some time in our Alps in August and begin of September.
  16. Try GDAL_utilities (GDAL is a geodata library, and has already a few command line tools which can do a lot of magic). http://www.gdal.org/gdal_utilities.html There are versions for most common OSes too but its originally from the Linux/Unix world: http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/wiki/DownloadingGdalBinaries And then search for "GDAL jp2 geotiff" on google.
  17. Just wanted to give you a little heads up on a new interview - with me - over at flightsim.com. Might seem a little bit surprising to read it on that page, but they are working hard to increase X-Plane coverage on their site ... so, why not (and its a good sign for our hobby). If you wanted to know a little bit more about me, you might check it out at: http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/content.php?13946-Interview-With-Andras-Fabian
  18. UPDATE: I have just re-uploaded all pictures after I finally found the - well - hidden setting in Google, which over saturated all of them (why did they set this as default at all ... argh). Now everything looks normal ....
  19. Here are some first PREVIEW screenshots (mostly from the European Alps) of my upcoming new X-Plane 10 HD Scenery Mesh v2! https://picasaweb.google.com/101666907909842492197/XPlane10HDMeshV2PREVIEW (it seems Picasa has somehow blown up the saturation of the images ... don't know why) A short list of the improvements: increased mesh densityimproved forest representation (in Europe, reprocessed/improved raw forest landclass data)all new OSM data (streets, railways, power lines, water)linear OSM rivers included (Tag:waterway=river)some - minor - landclass tweaking (like strip mines or riverbeds etc.).Planned coverage: Europe (this time, entire Europe)USA (complete)Alaskapossibly parts of Canada (like the West)... etc. (depends on the data size ... but this time the single DSFs will be even larger, so ...)Release? Hopefully this summer (most of the things are already in place, but there are a few things - partly not in my hand - which need to happen before).
  20. Yes, in about 1-2 months, there will be a new version 2 release of HD Mesh .... And I suspect, you already know my NZ Pro scenery.
  21. OK, but now they seem to be there in OSM ... which is all we need. Then with the next re-cut of the DSFs, the islands will show up in X-Plane too (as its true for all other changes in OSM ... thats why Greg is doing so much - great - work). By the way - a little, unofficial heads up - I think, the OSM deadline will be around the last week of May! But this doesn't mean, that new scenery will become available immediately after this date. This only means, that the data in OSM around this deadline will form the basis for the upcoming scenery updates (and quite likely, I will also use it for e new version of my HD Mesh ... for the entire USA / Europe etc.)
  22. That would mean 67.982 flashing warnings .... and with a global scenery, which must be processed unattended (kind of ... of course, many tests, experiments etc. try to avoid a lot of issues, but there is absolutely no way to validate the entire planet ... thats impossible), this is not a good option (as many of those roads are usually bridges - even if they don't have the tag ... and who are we to decide, if that small road in Tibet is now really a bridge or a data error ).
  23. Yes, I am sure that lake existed much longer, but it was not ADDED to OSM before July 2011 ... and thats what counts for the scenery. As all vector information is now (since XP10) sourced from OpenStreetmap (for good reasons - even if some people might disagree), the scenery can only contain features, which are already in OSM at the time when the data gets pulled and processed.
  24. NR, I think you did not read too much about the OSM topic, didn't you? Otherwise you would know why your lake is until now missing in XP10 ... Before I go in depth, here are some quite detailed posts by Ben Supnik (one of the X-Plane devs) on his Blog: http://developer.x-plane.com/2011/12/where-is-my-water-the-roadmap-for-osm-and-vectors/ http://developer.x-plane.com/2013/04/dsf-recuts-some-basics/ From the latter you will see, that the simple reason is, that the current Global Scenery is based on Data from July 2011 ... so, if your lake was not in then, then its of course still missing now. But as the latter link shows you, Laminar is just in the process of doing some DSF re-cuts (well, effectively I am doing most of the raw, basic data processing), which will step-by-step bring the scenery up to date (in respect to OSM features). And thats what this post from Greg was about. Asking for places, where people are still missing some water (and don't feel fit to add them themselves in OSM).
