X-Plane 10 Tree Lines and Farms Scenery released
alpilotx replied to alpilotx's topic in General Discussion
Just the continental USA (without Alaska - ok, that wouldn't make much sense anyways) for now ... (maybe, just maybe, I might add Canada at some point in the future). -
Today I have something new for X-Plane 10. A scenery, which tries to improve the look of the less “populated” areas of the default (or HD Mesh) Global Scenery, namely the agricultural areas, grasslands and pastures (the place, which can be wast and empty … especially in regions like the US Mid West etc.). This new scenery will add random tree lines along many-many roads and some – hopefully – well placed farms in the landscape (at least in the continental USA and Europe). After the download, you might be quite surprised by how some regions of the Global Scenery look (as a starter, try some random location in the US Mid West). To learn more and download this freeware (while considering a donation), follow this link: http://www.alpilotx....ines-and-farms/ If you want to go to the screenshots first: https://picasaweb.go...eeLinesAndFarms Or see some before / after comparisons (use the slide show in picasa, then you will see the difference quite "easily") https://picasaweb.go...ISONAfterBefore

Oh dear ... yes, of course I remember that issue. Well, problem is, I can't fix it until I don't have some newer OSM data in our "data repository". And until now, Ben is the "master" of OSM data extraction (at least when it comes to our scenery generator) ... I have already queried him about such an OSM data refresh, but until now he is completely buried in the 10.10 roll out. I am "afraid" I won't have much input from him until he has 10.10 out of the door (which will include the beta phase too) ... and even then, grabbing and pre-processing OSM data is something that takes some time. So, I can't promise a quick fix ... but it will come with time. (heck, even I do wait on an OSM refresh, as I don't really want to create further HD Mesh tiles with the old data .... but at least I have something else in my pipeline).

Thats an absolutely "normal" error, which essentially tells you, that RAM was exhausted ... (with the currently 32bit X-Plane limited to max 4 Gbyte, and depending on OS usually somewhere between 3-4 GBytes). For example this Blog post from Ben Supnik (an X-Plane developer), talks about this: http://developer.x-plane.com/2011/12/bad-alex-bad-the-road-map-for-memory/ Whit the 64bit version of X-Plane, this type of messages should be far less common.

After the quite successful first release of the X-Plane 10 HD Mesh Scenery, I have added a few new regions to the download section. I hope you will enjoy them too: Iceland Scandinavia UK/Ireland East Europe Madagascar Hawaii New Zealand A 5×10 degree area in the USA (around Texas) You can see a lot of new screenshots here: X-Plane 10 HD Mesh 2 IMPORTANT: the old scenery tiles did not change, so you don’t need to re-download what you already have! You can download the new regions from here (and there is a donation button on the website )

Wow, absolutely impressive stuff!
-
Very impressive ... well, this is how photo scenery should look :-) Especially if the also manage to drop enough 3D clutter on it (like we can already see with the OSM city objects).
-
Yes, just "simple" singing up (its free) ... I already "collected" 8 GBytes of extra space, so it works
-
Yes, I am fully aware of such offerings (with dedicated servers etc.) .... but that price point would be entirely outside of my scope (or I would need to make my stuff payware ... which is not really my intention). So, I think, the file hosters are an acceptable compromise as long as they work (even if they only work 95% of the time).
-
No, I won't ... at least not until Minus.com works ... I have already uploaded over 15 GBytes ... and redoing takes days with 1 MBit upstream (so, I try to avoid it as long as possible ... and rather use the bandwidth for new stuff)! And it seems, servage.net is a paid service ... which is not generally wrong, but at the current rate of donations (hrhrhm ) it wouldn't be covered for long. Ah, and are you sure about the unlimited storage and traffic? I do have all of that already at my current web provider (where my website is hosted), but you very quickly find out, that almost NO webhosting has a real unlimited traffic. Somewhere deep in the fine print you always see, that they mean some kind o "fair use" ... which in the end means, that the traffic is really not unlimited. I have already run into that limit a few times with my webhosting (usually the webhosters do not like this) ... thats why I went to the free file hosters.

Hi! Please read this if you would like to help me get a bit more storage space (for more downloads!) at Minus.com: http://www.alpilotx.net/2012/04/16/help-me-to-get-more-storage-space-at-minus-com/

So, you are messing with the grand Canyon ...
-
Sorry ... even though its not too far from me, I will not make it to Munich over the weekend. I have other commitments, and add to this the shortened weekend (we will be changing the clocks because daylight saving) ... it would have been too much. But next time (where ever that will be) ...

Happy birthday from me too! Andras

Well, if the mountains slopes, edges are "soft", then there won't be so big differences. But not only the elevation structure changes with HD mesh, but also the landclass assignments. And as bokepacha told you ... it doesn't do magic in all places
-
Alejandro, your screenshots are great! thanks for doing them. And about the landclass ... well, its not so much the landclass I think (as it is from the very good source of the European Environment Agency ... the CORINE data). Its much more, the question what kind of textures are currently assigned to those triangles. And they are definitely not perfect. Our texture artist Albert already noticed this, and told me few days ago, that next he will start working a bit more on the south (because he finds it too green too). And all his updates to textures - which you get trough XP10 updates - will also benefit the HD Mesh (it uses the same artwork). So, be patient a little bit (but never ask for time frame) ... I think, the texturing will improve in this region too
-
The good fairy has listened to Alejandros wish ... so we have now a HD Mesh Canary Islands (Ultra HD that is, with even higher mesh resolution - which really only works on islands, as they don't have much land mass to contribute to the filesize ). You can't miss it at the bottom of the download page: http://www.alpilotx.net/downloads/x-plane-10-hd-scenery-mesh/
-
Yes, a beautiful region (was there during my test quite often) ... And if we are already talking about Spain: what works very well too with HD Scenery, the "Picos de Europa" (http://en.wikipedia....Picos_de_Europa) . And no, even there I haven't been in real life (but at least in the Spanish Pyrenees last year: see photographs here )
-
Yes, that would be possible ... but I did not want to go in great hassle with the forests, as I really only see them as an experimental(!) replacement. We are intending to overhaul the default (in XP10 that is) forest definitions anyways over the coming months (don't ask for a time line!) which will hopefully obsolete this little "extra" pack.
-
Alejandro, I think I might do the Canary islands at some point in the future (as I like them in X-Plane too ... never was there in real life though) ... we will see ...
-
This will definitely NOT work in XP9! The HD Mesh is identical to the XP10 Global Scenery when it comes to artwork use (textures etc.) ... and most of it (and many new technology) is/was not available in XP9.
-
Hi Bokepacha, Have seen you comment on x-plane.es (even if I can't read spanish - could have asked my wife maybe). And well, its very improbable that anybody else can reproduce this in the next time, as I used our existing tool chain from the Global Scenery creation. For me, this meant, that it was quite easy to do, as I had everything set up, and "only" tuned the mesh parameters ... (but the preparation was essentially the 3 years I worked on the Global Scenery ). But now that you say ... Canary islands might really be a nice addition. I will consider to add them at some time (I just don't want to promise anything).
-
Strange ... because if I try it just now, it seems to work (as I tried to do my best with linking to the file hoster - which was not trivial at first). But I can imagine, that the file hoster is "playing" around with their software, and maybe hoses it from time to time ... But obviously, you got what you wanted in the end

I have just made available the experimental X-Plane 10 HD Mesh Scenery (as freeware). It covers these regions (screenshots are in the gallery on my page - and posted here in previous threads): European Alps and Pyrenees (and all land in between) USA West (Rockies, Grand Canyon … you name it) Alaska Canada West PLEASE: READ ALL THE INFORMATION ON THE DOWNLOAD PAGE BEFORE YOU START! There are quite some things to consider, before you start testing this scenery. I am in no way liable if you blow up your machine! Here is the direct link to the info/download page: http://www.alpilotx....d-scenery-mesh/ (it also contains a little bonus - an experimental, dense forest replacement ) Previous threads about this topic: http://forums.x-pilo...3072-alaska-hd/ http://forums.x-pilo...-scenery-shots/
