[Famous question] Will my PC run XPlane?

I'm considering switching from the rather horrible MSFS to X-Plane, so I'm thinking, what sort of performance should I be expecting?

N.B. Keeping in mind the worst case scenario (everything at max), some complex addons, lots of clouds (+REXPlane)

Here's my PC

Intel Core i5-750 clocked @ 3.9GHz
4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 @ 2000MHz (CL7)
Radeon 5770 1024MB

Resolution 1280x1024 (though switching to a 24'' wide soon - so 1900x1080).

You'll run it fine. Performance will be much, much smoother than in FSX.

I run at 1920x1200 with most settings up high (texture res is my main feature, the others I'm not too bothered about) and your GPU is faster than mine (4870) and your i5 is clocked up at the same as my i7 is. You have less ram than me, but it prob wont be an issue.

Just make the effort to stick with it, It took me a little while to go from missing the things FSX has that x-plane doesn't to where I am now - missing what x-plane has that FSX doesn't and not caring about the rest.

Yeah Ivan you'll run X-Plane fine. Hell you'll run it more than fine!

I run X-Plane rather good and I am using a Radeon 2600 Pro with only 256mb vram and I run X-Plane at 1920x1200 with all settings set to medium-high.

X-Plane has a tendency to be frame rate friendly, even with the most frame sucking add ons.

Good Luck

Reviving a slightly old topic - how does XPlane work with SLI/Crossfire?

Would it be better to add another Radeon 5770 into the combo, or replace the existing one with a more powerful single card?

I'm asking strictly from the performance standpoint  - since I don't want to go through the hassle of selling my current graphics card and buying a new one (still got a near-new E7500 and 4GB of HyperX DDR2 RAM :) )

I couldn't answer that myself, but how about I point you to a blog post on the subject written by the guy who programs X-Plane's graphics (and perhaps other things; sorry Ben for my ignorance!). I also recommend you read the comments on that post. My take is that you might not even have ANY benefit from the two cards. A more powerful card, on the other hand, will surely get you something.

Well, I just sent in my 5770 for RMA (cooling issues) and decided to take a GTX460 as a replacement while I wait for the ATi to get sorted.

One thing I was quite surprised about was just how horrible my performance was - I had 19FPS in Innsbruck, where with the 5770 I had 25+ easily. Since a lot of other people say they're getting quite good performance with their nVidias, could I be doing something wrong? XPlane was installed while I had an ATi, could there be some setting that was applied that hits nVidia cards hard?

Did you get rid of all traces of the ATI drivers before you installed the GTX 460?

I'm running a ATI 5870 in one i7 setup and a GTX 480 in another (specs below), the GTX 480 walks all over the 5870 with X-Plane and just about every thing else I run.

The biggest problem I have with the 5870 is the usual poor OpenGL support from ATI which with X-Plane is obviously not good.

Out of curiosity, why do you have two near identical top-spec machines?

Near identical except for the video cards.

I've been keeping up two machines one with highest end from ATI and one with the highest end from Nvidia for a while. I play a lot of games/sims and having just one video card from one manufacturer doesn't cut it.

Some games/sims run (optimized) better on Nvidia and some run better on ATI, very seldom do they run well on both.

If ever there were a hard-core gamer, I'd say you'd be it!   ;D

Not really, I do more with sims then anything else. A lot of times if it's just a “shoot-em-up” game with a good looking game engine I'll grab it for my PS3 or XBOX360 instead of the PC.

As of late I've been mainly using these systems for beta testing with Windows XP, Vista and Win 7.

I've also got a mid range system that consists of a Q9650/4GB of 1600MHz RAM, ASUS Rampage Extreme (Intel X48) motherboard and a EVGA GTX 285 so I can see how well the Core 2 architecture stacks up to the i7.

Maybe when AMD releases the “bulldozer” architecture I'll give them a try again.
