johnlvpl Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 Hi guys, I've finally made the decision to migrate from fs9 and fsx to xplane. I am also changing my operating system to LInux. Fed up of paying MS for the same thing when I can get something better and more secure for free. Anyway Im trying to find a supplier in the UK that can provide me a copy of X-Plane for Linux. I know I can get it from Xplane.org or xplane.com but Im a bit wary of ordering stuff that has no tracking and 6 weeks is a long time when Im accustomed to receiving stuff withing 1 week. Any help with this would be mostly appreciated. Quote
Goran_M Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 AFAIK, ordering from x-plane.com using express shipping provides tracking. In any case, you're in good hands with either method. Quote
john82088 Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 Whenever you get it set up, please let me know how you did it. I downloaded Linux and downloaded the x-plane Linux beta from their website and I was never able to get it to work. I would be interested in what version of Linux you plan on using and how you got it to work. Thanks so much.John Quote
johnlvpl Posted May 5, 2010 Author Report Posted May 5, 2010 Whenever you get it set up, please let me know how you did it. I downloaded Linux and downloaded the x-plane Linux beta from their website and I was never able to get it to work. I would be interested in what version of Linux you plan on using and how you got it to work. Thanks so much.JohnIm already using Linux, Ubuntu 10.04 X64 as I've had the best success getting that working. I downloaded the Linux Demo from the website and got it working without too much difficulty. Here's what I did. open up the synaptic package manager and install the following librariesia32-libs (if not already installed)libopenal1 (required)opened up terminal and changed to the following directory using following command cd /usr/lib32then type sudo ln -s libopenal.so.1 libopenal.so.0don't forget to enter your passwordthen install and have fun. the demo worked fine with this. I have ordered the linux version so will have to wait for this to arrive. When it does I'll offer all the help I can. I don't have the beta version so can't help you out with that. If you need any further help I'd be more than happy to help. Nice talking John Quote
crs Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 Hi there,I am running Linux (Gentoo Linux) and x-plane too. No problems at all. john82088 Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 I also meant to ask what type of fps that you get and how high are your settings? I had heard that Linux has some of the best framerates possible? compared to windows/apple with similar hardware? True?John Quote
johnlvpl Posted May 7, 2010 Author Report Posted May 7, 2010 hehe your gonna love this, I have the rendering set to extreme and Im getting a steady 70fps :-) need to churn more stuff upNice talkingJohn Quote
john82088 Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 Wow! That is impressive. What video card did you use? Thanks.John Quote
johnlvpl Posted May 8, 2010 Author Report Posted May 8, 2010 Oh it's nothing special really, A radeon 4670 I think it is. but I am using an asus crosshair (gaming mboard) with an unimpressivee 5200+ and 4 gb of Geil low latency memory in 4 banksYea I was so suprised myself when I check the frames. I could never get this on that apparition that microsoft came out with. On the same system with vista and fsx and all manner of tweaking I was lucky to get 20 frames, that was both at locked and unlocked modes. I think that the key to good frame rates is not so much your graphics card buy what is beyond it. Motherboard / processer / memory etc.Nice talkingJohn Quote
Goran_M Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 Looks like I'll be re installing Ubuntu again. Quote
crs Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 Hi there,You can see ma HW spec in my footer. I am easily getting more than 70fps when flying high and way over 30-40 on low altitides. Here is my configuration (I am running maximised window in 1680x1050 because for some weird reason it locks in FS).Flying over Sola (ENZV) with Javelin 1.3 at very low alt I am still getting around 40fps.Kind regards,Kamil Quote
john82088 Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 Thanks, that gives me a good idea. I am going to try to get x-plane to work again with Linux this coming week. I will let you guys know if I am successful or not. Thanks for sharing.John Quote
crs Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 I am sure you will be fine. Two common problems are:1) openal shared lib not being found (simple link can fix it)2) network not being recognised (make sure you have a proper FQDN set up in your /etc/hosts - or at least localhost being mapped to your hostname)If in problem, give us a shout - I am sure someone will be able to give you detailed help.Good luck!
