Hey All.

Soon I shall be upgrading my computer, making a big switch from Mac over to Windows, mostly because of the lower price and better specs available. I have decided on all my other parts except for my video card. Initially I thought of going for the Radeon HD 6970, with two GB of VRAM. Recently, however, I learnt that nVidia's counterpart, the GeForce GTX580, is a faster video card, beating the 6970 in all PC games, in terms of FPS. However, the 580 only has 1.5 GB of VRAM. My question is, should I get the slower video card with more VRAM, or the faster one with less VRAM?

Many Thanks for suggestions!

I personally would get the nvidia GTX580.

The real difference is

ATI for 3 screens

nvidia for 3d (as in nvidia 3dvision)

Both cards will be great for x-plane.

Hi karingka,

I'm using Macs but I have my big system on the PC i7 OC to 4.2GHz. ATI 5870 Eyefinity 5xHD vertical monitors, 12GB RAM, 256GB flash drive. My resolution (with bezel correction) is huge 11Mpix and I'm very happy with my frame rate... 30-60fps.

If you're using extreme resolution and sceneries like Reno, Oahu - 1.5GB od VRAM is very limiting factor IMO. I can easily break the 2GB barrier on my system...  GPU speed it's not a limiting factor for X-Plane with hiend cards (when I look at the clouds I can easily go up to 200fps). Also we need to wait for the 64bit version of the X-Plane...

regards

How about for x-plane 10, considering I do not upgrade the card?

Good to see you jump on the good value bandwagon K!

Both Kesomir and I have been very happy with our Nvidia cards for the last few yrs. My weedy little 560 OC 'only' has 1.28gigs and is freakishly good, so the 580 has more than enough memory and grunt! I only ask that you don't get it, so you don't totally smoke me!

But I opted for a cheaper card, the right sweetspot for price/performance, so that I could upgrade again in less than a yr without guilt when even better cards come out (one of life's certainties!). Check your prices out, if the 560 or 570 is half the 580 price, do the same as me. The 560 is such a good value buy. Either way you are in for a treat! Today's cards are seriously powerful.
