  1. IMHO, I don't think X-Plane 10 will ever be as "easy" on a computer as X-Plane 9 was.

I agree that you could never have too much power.  But as our friend Crashmax found out, you could have too much GPU given the rest of your computer's infrastructure.

  2. Hi James,

this is only a quick info about my experience with the Titan. More to come if I have the time.

The Titan is a beast and you can run HDR 4xSSAA+FXAA without any issues. I tested it at KSEA with B777 1.4 on X-Plane 10.20 64bit.

GPU was running at 80-95% load and used 4,3 GB VRAM. Shadows at medium, water reflection at default, resolution 2560*1440.

BUT! I also got a new issue. My CPU (3770K@4.9GHZ) was now the bottleneck. So I bought a new x79 mobo with 3930K which let me now fly with my preferred settings. At KSEA I still get "only" 22 FPS but as soon as I let the Airport behind my FPS are shooting through the roof.

Thats not much Infos I know but I have to find the sweet spot and report back.

I can clearly say, that if you not plan also to upgrade your mobo, CPU and memory you should buy the GTX680 4GB because Titan needs a very fast environment. Even faster than my current system.

    Best!

    Patrick

As one putting together some specs for a new X-Plane machine, I found your post interesting...

Given the single thread performance comparison between the 3770K and 3930K, it might actually be the memory bandwidth (dual-channel for the 3770K vs quad-channel for the 3930K) providing the difference in performance.

    Memory bandwidth of 3770K = 25.6 GB/s;  3930K = 51.2 GB/s

  3. We do, by buying their products.

Thank you for stating the obvious.

However, it is rare that a company will invest in additional full-time personnel before the actual (not projected) sales revenue justifies their expense.  Hence, Laminar's current model using contractors.

  4. i.) Hire more full time developers or artists to help them actually meet some of their goals.

I'm sure Laminar has a handle on their human resource allocations.  They are already trying to stretch what they have by using contractors.

Full-time employees are more expensive than you think.  Do you want to help pay for them so they may grant your other wishes?   ;)

  5. You could convert the XPJ 777 to function by using plane maker and then converting it to the latest format.

Or, you could peek into the "X-Plane>Extra Aircraft>Aircraft From Previous Versions>Heavy Metal" directory in the latest build of X-Plane 10 and find a free 777 there.

  6. I think I must be the only person to ever go from Mac to Windows.. For developing, I love my PC. It crashes a little more sure, but the amount of programs that I can use in Windows 7 that aren't available on Mac makes the clear winner, a PC.

Though i'd rather use a Mac for day to day use.

I came back to Windows as well.  And that was after over 7 years of giving it my best shot for personal use.  TBH, is was Vista made me switch to the "Dark Side."

As a trader for nearly 3 decades and a fund manager, I need a reliable platform and have yet to see a single trading floor or prop desk anywhere with even a single Mac on it.  I build my own machines now and install a clean copy of the OS on them.  It's the prebuilt machine with all the preloaded BS on them that give most the bad taste.  Before I built my own machines, I learned to simply bring the prebuilt machine home, format the drives and start over.  I had much better results that way.

As with PhM's experience, I can't remember the last time any of my equipment crashed.  Believe me I would remember, because it would have been an incredibly expensive event.

The kernel panics and SBBOD's on the Mac were no less annoying.

  7. 1.  I get to Hong Kong once or twice a year on average.  Perhaps the next time I'm in town, we'll make arrangements to hook up.  Talking to your parents about this won't be the top priority, though.  There's plenty to do in HK.   ;)

    2.  That point has been made countless times in countless blogs and forums.  Add-on support for different X-Plane versions is what it is and, for better or worse, solely the discretion of the add-on developers.  After all, it's their effort and time.

    3.  I'm just excited about Chris's work on Toronto and look forward to reading about its progress.  Let's call it quits on this, okay?   :)

  8. People still don't understand....no point purchasing something that is useless on my laptop, (1) i don't have and never will have a good desktop to run XP-10, and people still tell me to buy XP-10 and assemble a good desktop. Never will happen, why? (2) Ask my achievement-centered parents....

    1. Never is a pretty strong term.  Will you ever move out of your parents home when you get older?

    2. Put them on the line then...

XP9 already has little to no support from add-on developers, unlike FS9-ers there are still quite a few people still developing for FS9 and FSX...

Given #1 above, why are you still here grousing about it?

  9. XP? Old? tsk.   I gave up on security updates YEARS ago.  It was getting ridiculous having to download and install updates every time I switched it on.

And MS issuing end of life status? They do that with many things which run perfectly fine.

No to Win 7, too many issues for my liking.

Odd thing is, some of my music software requires (and runs) .NET framework (perfectly), iirc. Just Plan-G needs version 4.  So if you're running XP, forget Plan-G.

    Suit yourself...

  10. There is no proper one with orthos, but its fine if you don't support XP9...just like FSDT, ORBX and the others...no Fs9 support

It is evident, then, that they realized that producing two versions is too much work just as Chris did.

Perhaps this is a sign for you to move on [to XP10] as well.   ;)

  11. Just meant that anyone selling planes exclusively at the concentration camp known as the org won't make this list.

This completely neuters the purpose of what I thought would become an excellent centralized reference for those wishing to update their aircraft to 64-bit compatibility.  It's too bad you are letting your personal experiences [biases] with the Org get in the way.

That said, I offer the following suggestions:

    1.  Ask the moderators to edit the title of this thread to include "except those available exclusively at the Org" so that we'll know in advance the list will be incomplete.

    or

    2.  Add an indication to items in your list stating exclusive availability at the Org and let the readers decide for themselves.
