  1. I stumbled upon this post and, has I am working in the game industry on graphics engines, I feel that I have to put things straight.

     

    It's quite the opposite, and has been for a while, all top professional game engines are multi-threaded. Given the fact that game companies want to get the best results and cram as much as they can in their games, why would they leave 75% of the processing power (in the case of a quad core CPU) unused in the first place ?

    • Valve presented their work on their source engine in 2007, here are some interesting slides.
    • Volition also presented their work in 2007, the presentation can be found here. This one is especially interesting as it presents the whole design process leading toward a multi-core engine.
    • The same goes with DICE, a presentation can be found here.

    I had quite a long email discussion with Ben, back in 2008 probably, explaining him why the job architecture was the way to go with a multi-core hardware. So who knows, may be one day this will happen.

    There's a part of me that recalls a comment being made by one of the X-Plane developers that GPU drivers are single-threaded, hence the single X-Plane rendering thread.  (Disclaimer: I could be very wrong about this.)

     

    Have you been in contact with Ben lately regarding any progress?

  2. Then after some minutes my monitor turns black and it looks like the GPU-driver restarted. After that the screen turns normal again (I have this problem very often with the DC-3 although less frequent with my new GPU (GTX 770) than with my old one (AMD 7950). 

     

    Problem4: Is the DC-3 the cause of GPU driver faults?

     

     

    The DC-3 has absolutely nothing to do with your GPU faults.

     

    There is a known issue with TDRs (Timeout Detection and Recovery) with the NVIDIA drivers after version 314.22.  Since the GTX 700 Series GPU cards require drivers from 320 and higher, they are affected.  NVIDIA is working on this and should have a remedy for this issue relatively soon.  The 326.80 Beta is available for testing, but a small percentage of users are still experiencing some problems.  There is a theory circulating (only a theory) that some recent Windows updates may be at the root of the problem.

  3. I bet you're proud of yourself for finding that one.  But you entirely missed the point.  I never intimated that criticism doesn't serve a purpose.

     

    The unhealthy state of things here is that you spend too much time throwing stones at other people's work and don't get enough of your own done.

    Appreciate the concern about Log pollution. 

    We'll tidy it up, but it's not something I think you need to worry about while you fly.

     

    Here's why:

     

     

    60 * 60 = 3600

    / 5 = 720 reports an hour.

     

    Log packet is approx 244 bytes.

     

     

    244 * 720 = 175,680 bytes per hour

     

    175,680* 24 = 4,216,320 bytes per day

     

     

     

    So your exposure is about 4 megs per day of continuous sim use.

     

    Fair enough.  But it is the highest resolution license check I have ever seen.  :)

  5. The update is much appreciated!

     

    I do have a couple of questions though:

     

    1.  Is it really necessary for the DRM to check itself once every 5 seconds?  A long flight will really fill up the log.  Even if just left at the end of a runway, it'll fill up the log.

     

    2.  If I quit X-Plane with the CRJ loaded, the CRJ Avionics plugin occassionally hangs and prevents X-Plane from closing.  I need to force quit X-Plane.  If I switch away from the CRJ to any other aircraft before quitting X-Plane, no problem.

    The point I was trying to make is these days we see and hear about every little wart and pimple about everything because countless news outlets and bloggers need something to fill time and space.  And the more sensational, the better.

     

    It would be fair to say the media is hypersensitized to issues with the 787.  Because of the well-publicized lithium battery problem, it has become a favorite target.  Now, a fuel pump alarm goes off and all of a sudden there's another "major issue" with the Dreamliner.  In 35 years of airline business travel and even in my own aircraft, I can't tell you how many times a flight was delayed or an early landing was necessary due to some issue deemed by the PIC to be worthy of some investigation.  None of them made the news headlines, much less with the hysteria seen today.  There is a reason why there are redundant systems on an aircraft.  S--t is going to happen.

     

    In other words, we need to step back and look at the bigger picture and keep matters in proper perspective.  Boeing does not need to rethink the whole aircraft.  [using your words]

  7. Just imagine what it would have been like had the internet and hundreds of worldwide 24/7 news outlets existed when the 747 was initially released.

     

    Every new aircraft, particularly one as radically different in design and construction as the 787, is going to have its teething problems.
