Can someone help me get to grips with stab trim?
bpcw0001 replied to ezfrag's topic in Flying the Challenger
I use that, too. What's your experience? Have you found this tool to yield values that work well with the Hot Start 650 in all cases? -

Yes, it seems to be a bit of an issue. Trim too much nose down, and the aircraft may climb nicely, but you can't get it off the ground. Trim to get her easily off the ground, and she'll shoot up in the air at a high pitch angle. We're essentially missing a W&B tool that matches the HS650. Also see From watching some Challenger takeoff videos, it appears that the pilots always trim the nose a little down soon after liftoff, which indicates a compromise in the TO trim setting between getting the aircraft off the ground, but not wanting to climb too steeply. Maybe some of the real-world Challenger drivers can comment on that. Meanwhile, I've resorted to flying with a fixed payload (4pax + 1FA 200lbs each, and 250lbs baggage). My usual trips take around 6.000-8.000lbs of fuel, which I can handle with a 29% trim input into the FMC, yielding a trim value of about 4.6 More fuel will require more nose-down trim. It's not perfect, you'll have to kind of pull her off the ground, but the ensuing climb is not as brutal and only requires little nose-down trim after liftoff to ease her into a reasonable climb rate. -
Thanks. I really appreciate you real-world pilots sharing knowledge here.

Very good insights, thanks. Seems that the ALT LEGS functionality would merit some implementation in the HS Challenger then. Since we don't have it in the sim (yet), what about setting up SEC PERF for the SEC FPLN beforehand? Would that not mitigate losing all the PERF information when a quick switch is required? Surely it would mean double work in setting up PERF, but you wouldn't have to do it only when things are getting hot and you need to switch to SEC FPLN quickly.

Sorry, I thought everybody knew except me. Yes, just click the filler cap.

Wow. Thanks for this comprehensive explanation. And a bloody good simulation from Hot Start if they took this into account. This would basically render the FD useless for ILS approaches, at least for lateral tracking, and we have to do them "raw data" just flying the needles.

Opening aft equipment bay - engine oil fill - how?
bpcw0001 replied to FYG001's topic in Flying the Challenger
I found the oil consumption of my current Hot Start crate to be quite high. After about 6h air time each engine gulps a good quart of oil refill. Got into the habit of checking on oil before each multi-leg day. -
Yes please!

Yeah, there's also been some older discussion over at pprune with people discussing the somewhat unreliable/unpredictable behavior of autotune and nav-to-nav transfer in the real-world Proline system. Seems the HS Challenger simulation is spot on even here That stuff seems to be quirky in real life as well. With the knowledge that the system does not work any better in real-life, I can well settle with it being the way it is.

Yep. Preselect is always VOR/LOC for both sides. I go to great lengths checking this since I understand its importance. I'll see if I get something reproducible.

Came across several more occasions of autotune/ghost needles not working/showing up. It remains somewhat hit and miss for me, even at the same airport/approach (e. g. LIRA), and even if the procedure is always the same (Capt and FO nav sources carefully checked to be FMS1/FMS2). I'm quite at a loss here and resorted to pre-setting ILS frequencies and courses in case the autotune does not kick in. No big deal, but not really as it is supposed to be.

Does this apply to the flight deck as well? Seems to be pretty worn and scratched in the HS Challenger. Thinking of popping out my old Photoshop and doing a little touchup work on those scratched and smudgy cockpit elements.

That wheel well looks remarkably clean. Very new bird, or recent wash? Or is it that it just doesn‘t get that dirty?

In my experience, if you need to divert at your destination , the route given by ATC is pretty ad hoc anyway. Most of the time they‘ll throw some waypoints at you and you need to set up the flight plan on the go, including negotiation of the runway at the alternate airport. Imho not much to set up already before takeoff. preplanned sec flpn comes in more handy for having one engine out departures or immediate returns to the departure airport ready at hand and preplanned. Other than that, when diverting, enter a hold at your actual destination (active fpln), copy diversion route instructions from ATC and set up your diversion route in sec fpln. When done, activate sec fpln, and direct-to first waypoint (or whatever atc wants). When not holding, e. g. direct diversion right after go-around, same thing. Be on HDG, prepare/activate sec fpln, then direct-to first wpt, and back to NAV. Surely there are many ways to skin a cat. I found diversions to be highly dynamic in nature. Usually ATC asks for intentions after GA and will accomodate.

I see.

Hi, according to Smartcockpit lighting documentation for the Challenger 605, the center pedestal integ light control knob should also regulate the backlighting of the standby compass above the glareshield. However, in my installation, that thing remains dark. Is this different from the 605, or not modeled/a bug? also, btw, the landing alt analog gauge backlighting is very dark. You need to crank up the overhead integ lighting to unpleasant levels at night to get decent backlighting for that gauge. What‘s up with this?

Crawling along at M0.72 maxing out range, our just saving fuel?

Interesting. Thanks for the info. At least they know about it.

Great pictures! How did you get them to look so close to the Hot Start Challenger The only thing I am wondering is about the blue color of the ADI sky on the PFD with SVS on. On all these shots, it seems to be a much darker blue than in the HS Challenger, where it looks very light blueish and washed out. Is this a camera / lighting thing?

MSFS can at least do some satellite weather overlay in some avionics, e. g. in the Citation Longitude Garmin 5000.
-
Actually, it's not a switch, but a crank.
-
My guess is: pedal adjustment. But I am still not sure what exactly you are talking about. Maybe a screenshot with the thing circled in red would help

The yoke of the Challenger has many switches and buttons. Which one exactly are you talking about?
-
Ah, ok. Thanks for the clarification.

It's been a while, but I just stumbled over this thread. Would it be asked too much if you explained in which way Acronis interfered and caused crashes of X-Plane and the Challenger? I run imaging software on my machine too and would like to understand any possible implications of doing so.
