Thanks again for your nice comments! RealScenery uses 1/3 and 1/9 arc second elevation data, which is roughly an elevation point every 30ft/10m (1/3 arc second) and 9ft/3m (1/9 arc second), which renders very nicely in-sim. Laminar has to produce scenery on a world-wide basis, so they have probably taken the approach of using a courser (less detailed) resolution, so they have the same consistency of detail world-wide.

Early morning flight over the city of Mount Shasta, with Black Butte in the background.
-
More of the beautiful Pacific coast. This is near the city of Arcata.
-
Flying over Tomales Bay, just a few minutes flying time north of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco Bay Area. The Point Reyes National Seashore nature reserve is to the right as we head south toward the Bay Area in the early morning. The Nicasio Reservoir is in the distance on the left.

Flying over Redding, California, population 90,000. Redding is surrounded by mountains on the north, east, and west, with agricultural farm lands to the south. In this image, the Sacramento River is on the right. Enterprise High School is below and to the right of the airplane. The Redding municipal airport (KRDD) is in the background to the upper left. The major highway seen on the right side of the image is Interstate 5, the major north-south highway on the U.S. west coast, which stretches from Canada to Mexico.

Flying over the beautiful hills of the Lake Del Valle recreation area, northeast of the city of San Jose. The water reflection and atmospheric effects of X-Plane 10 are amazing with photo-based scenery.

Thanks, Raven! Reid-Hillview (KRHV) and South County airport of Santa Clara County (E16) are both included in NorCal.

Flying on the west side of Mt. Shasta in far northern California, near sunset. Mt. Shasta dominates the northern California landscape as it rises to over 14,000 feet (4300 meters) above sea level, and has an elevation rise of 10,000 feet above the surrounding terrain. Interstate 5 (I-5), the main north-south freeway that runs from Canada to Mexico, passes right at the base of Mt. Shasta on the west side of the mountain. I-5 and Mt. Shasta are great landmarks when flying VFR in this area.

Crossing over Harry Sham Field and the city of Modesto, a city of about 200,000 people in the heart of California's central valley, about 100 miles east of San Francisco.
-
Enjoying the area north of San Francisco, looking down on the far north end of Lake Barryessa, just east of the famous Napa Valley wineries. This flight is heading west toward the Napa Valley and the city of Santa Rosa - beautiful day to take some friends up for some VFR site-seeing!
-
Flying over the city of Woodland, just west of the Sacramento Int'l Airport (KSMF), and northwest of the Sacramento metro area. Many of these central valley towns have a very sudden change between the urban area and the surrounding agricultural landscape, such as shown here.

I appreciate your excitement, Robert! Your file size guess was very good! Please see this post about file sizes and a map of the scenery areas available. Eric

An X-Plane newbie becoming uneasy with X-Plane 10
RealScenery replied to OldAirmail's topic in I'm New To X-Plane!
Hi OldAirmail, Welcome to X-Pilot and the larger X-Plane community. Yes, it is a bit different than MS Flight Simulator and other sims. Another new X-Plane user had the same question here just a few days ago. You can see the discussion here. While this is part of X-Plane's history, the scenery is a much higher priority now in version 10 and will continue to be so in the future, with both Laminar Research and third-party X-Plane developers making scenery a top priority. In general, many of your comments above are correct, however, there are also many quality non-payware options as well, depending on the airport you're interested in. Many people, just like you, are creating their own airports, with tools available now for version 10. It's not difficult if you're willing to spend a bit of time learning. Good luck Eric -
Yes, it doesn't get much better in terms of variety of flying; from very rural mountainous and agricultural areas to densely-populated urban landscapes. The rural areas of northern California are some of my favorites for flying.
-
The great agricultural lands of the San Joaquin Valley, south of Sacramento. This is the heart of California's croplands and is often referred to as the "Food basket of the world."

You, too, will have fun soon! Thank you for the nice comments!

RealScenery Washington State - anyone using it?
RealScenery replied to Tyler Smith's topic in General Discussion
Here is a table listing the differences between enhanced and legacy scenery, all of which work with v9 and v10. Cameron summarized the differences well. Enhanced Scenery Legacy scenery is great for higher altitude, daytime VFR, or commuter/airline flights around the state. Look at the galleries on X-Aviation.com for images of the scenery in-flight to see how the scenery looks in-sim. -
Flying over east San Francisco Bay looking down at container ships and the old Alameda Naval Air Station. Sun reflects off the water along the city of Oakland's inner harbor.
-
Flying in the South Bay, north of San Jose, over the large and colorful salt evaporators. A beautiful sun glint appears in the distance off the San Francisco Bay in the late afternoon. Moffett Federal Airfield (KNUQ) is in the background to the left in the image.

Strange graphics in xplane - unexplained blotchiness
RealScenery replied to Nicola_M's topic in Help!?!
Is that green 100% green (RGB 0 255 0) or some mix of RGB values? This goes back to my original post. If you haven't already, you might try a red that's not 100% pure, like RGB 250 0 0, or 255 1 1, or some other reddish hue until you come up with a mix that works. -

How about removing the gold completely, or trying another similar color, like yellow-brown. It's a simulator. Due to limitations of computer hardware/software, you may have to "get close" but it won't be an exact match with the real livery. Maybe you could have some others with the BK try it and see if they get similar results as you?
