Problem solved. It appeared to be caused by the presence of the old version and especially the old uninstaller. Once I had removed the latter the installer proceeded as expected. Curious.

While running, the installer seems to work fine. Once it reaches the point where it says it needs to uninstall the older version and I click OK, the installer gives below message, which I cannot make out. Can anyone help?
