(CNN) -- A man's body was found Saturday afternoon inside the landing-gear wheel well of a plane that had landed at a suburban Washington airport, authorities said.

Ground crew assigned to the aircraft -- an Airbus A340 operated by South African Airways -- discovered the body around 1:30 p.m. in a remote parking area of Dulles International Airport, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said in a statement.

Airport police, fire and other personnel went to the scene, joined by FBI agents and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers.

The location of the flight's origin was not immediately known.

The Fairfax County, Virginia, medical examiner's office will handle the case, according to the airports authority, which said that "an active investigation is ongoing."

The discovery did not affect any operations on runways or in terminals at Dulles, which is one of the nation's busiest airports and is located about 25 miles west of Washington, D.C.

I'm sorry but what type of BS is that? SAA only operates JNB-IAD, so what is the mistery?

I'm sorry for this poor lad, he probably did not know that landing gear bays are not pressurised, not heated and have little space...

Ah yes, i'm quite familiar with scenarios like this, they happen at airports where the general level of security at airports is lower. Typically, a person or people fleeing their country will climb into the gear wells and die from exposure or hypoxia. If memory serves, a similar scenario took place on a flight to london not long ago.

Yes, he expired during the flight and his body fell out when the landing gear was extended, landing in a residential street in West London.

You forgot the option that the person gets crushed by the landing gear...

I was shuddering at the grotesque idea of being crushed by a landing gear, or even worse, sliced by one of the legs *shudders*

Its (sadly) life.
