SAA only operates JNB-IAD, so what is the mistery? I'm sorry for this poor lad, he probably did not know that landing gear bays are not pressurised, not heated and have little space... According to wiki, SAA currently has no fewer than seventeen A340s. And it may not have been that this aircraft flew to the US directly from SA, as SAA serves 37 international cities. Ah yes, i'm quite familiar with scenarios like this, they happen at airports where the general level of security at airports is lower. Typically, a person or people fleeing their country will climb into the gear wells and die from exposure or hypoxia.
