Have for the last 48 hrs trying to figure out what happened and after

numerous diagnostics checks I find I have lost my main WinXP HD fried.

Which in turn cascaded into my Motherboard, I tried to switch my newer

newer HD into the place of the dead one to install a fresh copy of WinXP

only to find that it won`t read the disk, it spins up and all but goes

no further then that. Just hangs. :'(

Have a lot money invested into the old XPS 700. Bought it from the Dell

Outlet store back in Nov. 2006 Refurbished. So it had a guarantee like a

new one. The old video Nvidia 7850 GX2 died a couple years ago so I bought

a BFG GTX280. Then a couple extra 1tb Samsung HD`s and a LG Blu ray burner.

Guess its time to look over the Outlet store again.

Just bit the bullet and bought another XPS.

Jim,

I hope you kept your dead HD backed up. Sending it in to retrieve data will cost you a fortune.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy your new computer...Looks like a great XP 10 set up  :D .

It might be hopeless but try to download any Linux LiveCD, boot it and try to mount your old hard drive within Linux env. Is has been proven that sometimes Windows says 'no' while Linux can still easily mount partitions. It might be worth to try. If in doubt do not hesitate to send me a PM.

Good luck!

Kind regards,

Kamil

I might be able retrieve the data on my new computer, the old XPS 700 mobo is history so there is no hope in getting any info from it

with any other method. I have 4 internal HD`s in the old XPS and the one with WinXP pro was the one indicating problems to, but that

could be caused by the mobo not reading it correctly.  In the process of striping it down and preparing to part it out, even though its

dead, its still worth a lot money. 750watt PSU is in great shape along with the drives that came with it. The case alone is worth big

money, its huge and weighs in over 75lbs,heavy duty Aluminum. I plan on keeping it anyways in case I want to build another for my

son in the future.

Will be getting the new one next monday if the tracking info is correct.

Its here, arrived yesterday.

Stripped down my old Dell XPS 700 removing the Hard Drives,BFG GTX280,

and LG Blu-ray burner to install into the 730x. These cases are amazingly

simple to change these items out. Did notice the new 730X case you will

need a screwdriver to re move any of the PCI cards. No biggy. Took all of

5 minutes to remove and install.

The hardest part so far, getting use to Vista Premium. After all those

years of XP pro. Might just go out and upgrade to W7.
