Jim Kallinen Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 Have for the last 48 hrs trying to figure out what happened and afternumerous diagnostics checks I find I have lost my main WinXP HD fried.Which in turn cascaded into my Motherboard, I tried to switch my newernewer HD into the place of the dead one to install a fresh copy of WinXPonly to find that it won`t read the disk, it spins up and all but goesno further then that. Just hangs. :'(Have a lot money invested into the old XPS 700. Bought it from the DellOutlet store back in Nov. 2006 Refurbished. So it had a guarantee like anew one. The old video Nvidia 7850 GX2 died a couple years ago so I boughta BFG GTX280. Then a couple extra 1tb Samsung HD`s and a LG Blu ray burner.Guess its time to look over the Outlet store again. Just bit the bullet and bought another XPS.XPS 730x Desktop: Intel Core i7-920 (2.66GHz, 8MB cache) M414JCertified Refurbished 3E476Label D455M640 GB SATA II Hard Drive (7200 RPM) D469FUSB Keyboard DJ332Power DVD Software F382DDocumentation F6403No Raid F6405Operating System Label GM493Audio Jacks For X-Fi Sound Card GP061500 GB SATA II Hard Drive (7200 RPM) 2nd Drive GW2756 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz (3 DIMMs) H288JShipping Material H547MSoftware J019DNVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 1024MB J084CDell USB 6-Button Logitech Mouse J662DSound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer (D) Sound Card K236J64BIT Operating System DVD K423JAluminum with Clearcoat Chassis M408JSoftware CD M433HSoftware N270HCopper base Heat Sink with aluminum fins P004KGenuine Windows Vista Home Premium P166FMicrosoft Works 9.0 T013CResource DVD U732K16X DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability W574DWindows Live W871N19 in 1 Media Reader with Bluetooth XX658Roxio Creator 10 Y573CXPS 730x: 1Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, In-Home Service after Remote Diagnosis, 24x7 Phone Support (Included In Price) Qty 1Unit Price $0.00TOTAL: $1,479.00Additional Discounts and CouponsFree 3-5 day ground shipping with Any refurbished desktop system!Expires Friday, January 28, 2011View DetailsTotal PriceSub-total $1,479.00Shipping & Handling $29.99Shipping & Handling Discount -$29.99Tax* $109.08*Exemptions reflected in final checkout page onlyTotal Price2 $1,588.08So I will be taking my Bluray burner and GTX280 and 2/1TB hd and installing them into the new 730X Quote
alexgeo Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 Jim,I hope you kept your dead HD backed up. Sending it in to retrieve data will cost you a fortune.Anyways, I hope you enjoy your new computer...Looks like a great XP 10 set up .Alex Quote
crs Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 It might be hopeless but try to download any Linux LiveCD, boot it and try to mount your old hard drive within Linux env. Is has been proven that sometimes Windows says 'no' while Linux can still easily mount partitions. It might be worth to try. If in doubt do not hesitate to send me a PM.Good luck!Kind regards,Kamil Quote
Jim Kallinen Posted March 15, 2010 Author Report Posted March 15, 2010 I might be able retrieve the data on my new computer, the old XPS 700 mobo is history so there is no hope in getting any info from itwith any other method. I have 4 internal HD`s in the old XPS and the one with WinXP pro was the one indicating problems to, but thatcould be caused by the mobo not reading it correctly. In the process of striping it down and preparing to part it out, even though its dead, its still worth a lot money. 750watt PSU is in great shape along with the drives that came with it. The case alone is worth big money, its huge and weighs in over 75lbs,heavy duty Aluminum. I plan on keeping it anyways in case I want to build another for myson in the future. Will be getting the new one next monday if the tracking info is correct. Quote
Jim Kallinen Posted March 16, 2010 Author Report Posted March 16, 2010 Cool, just received the FedEx tracking numbers and it will be here Friday. Going to needmy cart to haul it up though. Box weight indicated by FedEx was 97lbs. Quote

Jim Kallinen Posted March 19, 2010 Author Report Posted March 19, 2010 Its here, arrived yesterday.Stripped down my old Dell XPS 700 removing the Hard Drives,BFG GTX280, and LG Blu-ray burner to install into the 730x. These cases are amazinglysimple to change these items out. Did notice the new 730X case you will need a screwdriver to re move any of the PCI cards. No biggy. Took all of5 minutes to remove and install. The hardest part so far, getting use to Vista Premium. After all those years of XP pro. Might just go out and upgrade to W7.
