boleyd Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 I have played with the XP-10 Demonstration but I am disappointed in my FPS versus the elderly FSX. I have a train simulator (Trainz) that has a choice of OpenGL or DirectX. OpenGL is very poor in this instance with 1/3 the frame Rate (FPS) of DirectX. I suspect the disappointing performance I see in the demo is because of OpenGL. Are there some nVidia control panel settings I should look at?Windows7 32 bit, 4gb memory, e8400 3ghz dualcore, nVidia gt240 512mb - overclocked. Quote
Kesomir Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 Check that your drivers are up to date. Quote
OlaHaldor Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 Your graphics card could without a doubt be replaced with something that actually gives better performance. Even though it's supported, you would benefit with a better gpu. A new CPU would help a bit too. Since you're on a E8400 today, you can upgrade to a quad core CPU without changing motherboard and ram. Quote
boleyd Posted December 9, 2011 Author Report Posted December 9, 2011 Ah, now XPlane 10 may cost me several hundred dollars. Hmmmmm.Yes, I understand keeping current with technology but the price/benefit is a consideration.May pass until there is a bit more product maturity.Thanks.... Quote
TOBS Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 (edited) For sure DIRECTX10 or 11 is much more powerfull as OPENGL on WIN machines, but as xplane works on every platform Austin will stay with OGL - and we hope for the developers of the videocards and drivers. I was very surprised of the very low framerates with the latest FURMARK bench test (stress test) for OGL on my machine with Win64, I7 3Ghz, 8GB Ram and a nvidia GTX580 fired from a very highend powersupply - OGL is not very strong on WIN!!!only 1070 points!Benchtest:http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/ Edited December 9, 2011 by TOBS Quote
boleyd Posted December 9, 2011 Author Report Posted December 9, 2011 My GT240 is only 530 FurMark points so I will have to look elsewhere for flight simulation. Quote
TOBS Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 My GT240 is only 530 FurMark points so I will have to look elsewhere for flight simulation. No wait - this Furmark Test is very very intensisv, do not give up and see what is coming up. Ben will work on FPS improvements as well as nvidia and ati will work on OGL they cannot only be for DirectX - and to be fair MSX is very slow on high resolutions. So play with the prefs in XP10 you have to find out what is best for your configuration. But surely very modern computer games and other applications are requesting a lot of power in graphic, cpu, ram and electricity :-)Do not give up - XPlane is the better simulator!!!Cheers Tom Quote
boleyd Posted December 10, 2011 Author Report Posted December 10, 2011 I will look periodically but this is one of those situations where you pay $80 but cannot use all that you pay for. To use everything you must spend Hundreds of dollars. This is not unique to X-Plane and has become a fact of PC life. Obviously my video card is not useable with this product. However, I complement X-Plane for releasing a demo that saved me $80, for now. Hopefully they continue to keep it patched so if any improvements help me I am aware of them. Quote
