Hi All,

I am new to X-Plane, not to simming though :)

I have just purchased Skymaxx Pro V2, I had been running with HDR on with 8XSSAA+FXAA and 4X Anistropic. With these settings I locked the FPS at 30 with NI and every scenario was silky smooth.

With Skymaxx I noticed some scenarios would drop the frames to the low to mid 20's and that would introduce some stuttering. I do understand that by introducing clouds the GPU will have a higher workload. I have still to experiment with the settings to find the sweetspot for my system but as a quick test I turned HDR off. Straight away I was back to a nice smooth sim. Should HDR be turned off when using Skymaxx Pro ? The funny thing is I couldn't see any discernible difference with it turned off

Regards

Welcome to XP, Richard.

The most obvious advantage of HDR is that it will give you massive real time lighting at airports without much of a performance hit.

Most airports will be mostly dark at night without HDR turned on. In general the lighting with HDR is more complex and allows for some special effects (doesn't mean it looks better in any [edit: every] case). HDR is generally meant to be the choice for XP10.

Most obvious downside is that HDR does not work well with MSAA and thus needs SSAA for a high quality antialiasing. And SSAA really hits the GPU. So turning off HDR means jumping to the faster MSAA and hence you recover FPS (HDR itself is not the point).

My guess is that you have some options enabled in Skymaxx that hit the GPU. You might want to post a screenshot of your skymaxx settings. To make up for a possible GPU hit you might also want to try to dial back your AA to FXAA+4xSSAA.

Regards
