Blender Rendering Scenes?

I would like to save lights and camera to a scene of sorts, so after thoroughly messing up the good thing I had, I can reload it.

Problem is, I find a camera angle and light situation I like, then I play with my mesh some more, shoot a few renders from different angles and lighting, then can't ever seem to get my original camera angle and light set up. Undo won't work as I would like to have different scenes to which I can go back and forth.

Any idea how to save a camera and light set up as a scene?

To save the lighting and stuff I go to File/ Save Default settings.  Make sure you set up everything with a blank Blender file. I saved the whole scene with meshes and all on accident. Once I launched blender I had my old mesh sitting there at launch; it was kinda confusing!
