Need to reload, often, when starting to use the DC-3 to get the trim to bind to keyboard/joystick (both)

When I start up a session in X-Plane I seem to need to reload, often, when starting to use the DC-3 to get the trim to bind to keyboard/joystick (both)... [so when it does work, great and otherwise not so much.]

what can I do to get it to consistently work as designed?
