landing gear pins

The latch / lockout mechanism is just a series of cleverly designed levers and the pin is an additional fool proof layer on top of everything else.

Temperature fluctuation in hydraulic lines could change pressurization levels which can change actuator positions.

Placing a pin through the holes means any possible variation in the hydraulic system is nullified. The lockout levers/latches cannot change position unexpectedly.

thank you very much for the detailed explanation
The picture above is self-explanatory but I can't quite see it on the CL650, do you also have a picture of the real CL650

Check it out in sim. The gear and gear pins are exactly as they are in real life.

Just guessing: The main gear does not have an overcentering like bigger jets, but I think an internal lock in the actuator. With A pin installed you can force the internal lock to stay engaged.

That is exactly right. The lock is internal inside the actuator, and the pin prevents it from moving to the unlocked position.

it IS a wonderful sim that Hot Start have created here!!!!

See the drawing (sic) below for the main gear locking mechanism. Claws that are part of the upper portion of the actuator (in black) grab the top of the lower portion of the actuator (in red - this is the shiny part of the actuator seen in the picture of one of the previous posts).

The locking mechanism is a "hat" (in green) that positions itself over the claws and prevents them from releasing.

When the gear handle is down, hydraulic pressure is continuously applied on the down side, which will (should) keep the gear in the down position, and the "hat" over the claws, even when the pins are not in.

When you select gear up, hydraulic pressure lifts the hat, and pushes the lower actuator up a bit. The claws will spread and the actuator moves to the retracted position.

Before you switch off hydraulic system 3, you have to put the pins in. The pin locks the "hat" over the claws, thus preventing actuator movement.

If you forget to remove the pins and take off, the gear will not come up because the hat remains in place and the claws can't spread. People have tried...
