but no clouds anyway

- Did the smp installer run without error?

- are all files in the silver lining plugin folder (if there are only 2 folders and no files, there's something wrong)

- did you use the vc 2015 that came with the smp installer?

Yes, it did!

There are 5 files and 6 folders, looks populated...

The Mac version contained the installer only, I think the vc is for Windows only

Thanks for your hints anyway!

It should appear once at sim start unless you decide to turn it off in the preferences screen.

Server error Cam fixed is unlikely to reoccur. Not sure what's going on.

Getting to the end of my day so I'm going to leave it for Cam to dig into with fresh eyes in a couple of hours.

Well, that sounds like it's good news. However, I don't think it terms of "Gizmo" as I didn't buy anything with that name. I bought SkyMaxx Pro and so no preferences screen for it that made mention of this box. I'll look elsewhere as an option to disable it is all I was hoping for.

UPDATE: Under Gizmo64/Windows/Preferences I have an option to "Automatic License Update at Sim Start".

That sounds less than optimal to me. It's not the same thing as disabling the splash screen. It reads as if it disables a feature. If I turn this off, what's the impact? Will I need to manually update my license? If so, how often?

I don't see any indication of a SkyMaxx Pro license in your log. Cam will have to look into this when he gets onine.

"Gizmo" is X-Aviation's plugin that we use for license management. If SkyMaxx Pro does not detect a valid license, then it will not render clouds.

Thanks for this clarification. Just fyi: On the X-Plane screen I see the SkyMAXX box indicating that the license was 'updated', whatever that means.

For further analysis I'm adding the SkyMAXX  part found in log.txt:

Well, for my case I turned off that option and the pop-up is gone. Still concerned about what turning that off does other than that and if it means some other potential distraction later.

bstratmann, can we see your entire log.txt file? I'm starting to think there is something unusual about your setup.

Probably best to open a support ticket with X-Aviation at this point honestly, as they'll have to get into the weeds of the details and it'll be easy to lose track of things in this giant thread.

Thanks, I have attached the log.txt here. I will open a ticket asap.

Log.txt

Let's let this go to a ticket, but some parting thoughts:

You've got a fair amount of third-party plugins and scenery installed - I think I see signs of HD Mesh, which may be consuming your available memory. If you haven't already tried it, see if temporarily removing your add-ons and custom scenery brings your clouds back.

You're also flying in a very stormy area, which further strains your system's resources. If you manually set up partly cloudy conditions, do the clouds return?

I know you've got a decent system, but it's still possible to overload it with too many add-ons.

Thanks for coming back on the missing clouds. I have temporarily removed all plugins (except the SkyMAXX family) and custom scenery and switched to a area with less turbulent weather, same problem.

Perhaps it might help that turning on SkyMAXX in PluginAdmin has influence on the framerate (lower with SMP, as expected), but clouds are visible if and only if SkyMAXX is turned **off**.

We do not give you the option to disable the splash screen. The reason you are getting the splash screen ONE TIME at each startup is because the option for allowing the license to automatically update with the server AT SIM START is selected.

If you de-select "Automatic License Update at Sim Start" then your license will run out in ~ 14 days and you'll need to activate again.

The splash screen serves as a purpose to remind you we "phoned home" without doing it behind your back. Privacy is an important aspect to many of our customers.

Cameron, I guess what I'm requesting is one level of even more privacy. Go ahead and phone home and don't tell me about it. This destroys the immersion factor to a large degree for me. I'm sitting in my cold and dark plane ready to flip some switches and I have this silly message about a license that I'm required to make go away every single time I load the game.

It reminds me of the 1980s all over again with my having to do something because I didn't steal your product. Trust me, I won't be the last person griping about this annoyance and, for me, I will not consider buying another X-Aviation product as long as this requirement is here. I'm also already looking to replace SkyMaxx Pro as a result of this.

Very disappointed.

So far you are the only one. There have now been thousands of computers activated.

Do you realize how petty this actually sounds? You're griping to THIS extent over a notification that you only have to click to dismiss when the simulator loads. Does the X-Plane configuration screen make you this upset too?

It's a little over the top, dude. Especially considering you can stop it from doing this every time when you de-select the update at every sim start option.

Cameron, as I've said elsewhere, the options you give are all one-sided and benefit only you. Sorry, but I prefer to deal with companies that don't assume from the get-go that I'm a thief out to get them. Sure, I can turn off this option and then be nagged EVERY TWO WEEKS for the privilege of having bought a product from you.

Imagine if you bought a TV and every time you turned it on you had to turn off a license screen that came up each time. You'd be livid. Are you going to actually sit there and suggest to me that this isn't the case? That you'd be perfectly fine with doing that?

What other provider nags their customers like this? I own dozens of pieces of flight sim software and the only nagging I get is from X-Aviation.

Actually, one-sided and benefiting me would be connecting to my server behind your back without you knowing. It would also be borderline malicious. Explain to me exactly how this benefits me in any way.

This is not a TV. Poor example. But, there are many games I play, even console games, which require me to click 'start' continuously. This is a simple mouse click. Whoop-dee-doo. It's even more whoop-dee-doo because you're in here making a fuss of something you can turn off. Talk about petty!

What other X-Plane provider allows you to manage your licenses? A nag implies we are requesting you or forcing you to do something. Neither is the case.

Again, you're make something of nothing.
