#53824 Saab 340A Preview - New Variant! - April 2nd, 2013

Posted by Cameron on 17 May 2013 - 06:15 AM

I take it the small modifications for the cargo model in the cockpit are there. (the smoke detectors and removal of one recircfan springs to mind).

I'm not 100% sure here, but there are many variants of the Saab rolling around, and we've had to stick to "one". So many different panel configs, etc. It may be so that Saab standardized the Cargo variants, but I don't have any clarification on this.

Please be aware this is modeled after the A. Our primary concern is the passenger variant, and if the cargo variant has mods in it where smoke detectors are removed then we're not really concerned about that. The cargo version is thrown in as a bonus, and these are small factors that will have to be lived with.

Minus the cabin differences visually, if it's in the 340A passenger systems, it's in the cargo version. Non-issue, really.

#53821 [SOLVED] Fwd: X-Aviation customer looking for help with CRJ-200

X-Aviation defines the meaning of "patient."

While Steven is off being his childish norm, my thanks to birdy.dma and Kris.

This customer also sent in an e-mail to us the same day he posted the original thread, and we took care of him there.

So does that mean that geometry the user sees in the sim is not the same geometry that X-Plane runs the calculations on?

That's correct.

My own guess would be that the approach X-Plane takes (i.e. give it a model and get the result "for free") works reasonably well for standard aircraft configurations and flight regimes. While that is a major strength of X-Plane (anyone can create aircraft or you could even use it as a priliminary design tool) it doesn't really cut it anymore for the precision that IXEG is looking for.

That's essentially verbatim what Tom stated, so you have that assumption correct. For an $80 sim it is quite impressive in its ability to provide realism and enjoyment within the realm of reasonable expectation for the price. It can be debated all day long, but of all the sims out there in this price range, many of us feel X-Plane provides the most realistic approach you can get.

Morten, what you write makes we wonder: If you have to create some "strange" airfoils and models in order to get it right, isn't that in a way against the philosophy of X-Plane? Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of the approach X-Plane takes, I'm just interested in how things work and why things are done in a certain way.

Morten can answer this further, but I view this answer as a 'yes' and a 'no' one. We already know that X-Plane's approach by itself is not 100% there, but does quite a good job for any enthusiast or developer. In the instance of Morten and the IXEG guys, they want more out of X-Plane (going off of what he has already said) and they know how to get it, even if it takes reverse engineering. They are bending the sim to be even more realistic than it's intended to be, and above all, we can't expect these guys to share every secret they have in their inventory. :)

How close is close? Close enough for writing a news in a magazine issued in August?

Absolutely!

Hello, all,

This will serve as a formal forum announcement that we have released the version 2.0 update for Wilmington International Airport. All customers who have purchased the scenery up till now have been sent an e-mail by X-Aviation with complete installation instructions on how to update your product. We have made this a very simple process! For those that purchase the scnery from today forward, your purchased download will already be updated to version 2.0 for you.

What if I didn't get the update e-mail?

If you did not receive your update e-mail don't fret! X-Aviation has updated our system to allow all customers to update with ease, regardless of whether you received an e-mail for the update! Here's what to do:

1. Login to your X-Aviation account here: https://www.x-aviati...talog/login.php

2. View your past order history invoice that contains the Wilmington Airport purchase on it.

3. At the bottom of the invoice you will find a blue highlighted link to your update that says: "Wilmington International Airport".

The new installer will detect whether this is a new install, or if you already have any Wilmington scenery version installed. Depending on your current situation, the installer will run through the appropriate paths with you, including uninstalling all unnecessary items from the previous version!

There are some important fixes and requests implemented in this update.

The following is a list of additions/fixes included:

- Added 6"/pixel imagery for the runways, taxiways and tarmac's.

#53269 NORCAL Scenery Preview - January 16th, 2013

Posted by Cameron on 05 May 2013 - 09:06 AM

I have never seen a piece of software seeded to the public that took soooooo long to get to release.  What's the deal?  Will we ever see NorCal in the wild?

If not, please stop with the tease already!

Plenty of recent posts in here keeping everyone up to date, including the fact that Laminar has been actively involved in fixing bugs in an effort to get this out the door.

#53163 American US Air merger

Posted by Cameron on 02 May 2013 - 03:30 PM

It's US Airways buying American, not American buying US Airways. They are merging and keeping the American name, but US Airways management will run the show. One World will be the alliance of choice. All aircraft will be painted in a new paint scheme, and it has not yet been finalized which livery (either an entirely new one, or the new AA one) will become the brand of the new airline.

#53035 Making X-Plane 10 usable

Posted by Cameron on 29 April 2013 - 09:12 PM

- The selection of actions at joystick setup is painfully missing some obvious operations, like cycle through views, zoom in/out, etc.

Cycle views has never been in X-Plane, but zoom in/out is. Simply go to the joystick settings, then click the 'Buttons: Adv' tab. Hit the button on your joystick you would like to assign something to, then hit the radio button that says 'general/'. You will then see various options for zoom.

- I wanted to set looking around on the joystick on my gamepad, which resulted in a jerky, oh-my-god kind of movement in the 3d view. No smoothness at all.

Can't say I've ever used a gamepad with X-Plane, but I can't think of any logical big reason why it wouldn't work unless the gamepad is registering as a button click in an awkward way. With a joystick hat switch the pan is very smooth.

- No looking around in 2d panel mode.

Sure you can. Press 'Q' or 'E' when in 2D, or use the arrow keys to pan sections of a large 2D panel if it's not all in view.

- The virtual cockpit mode is ugly beyond description.

That's a baffling statement. Are you using some old aircraft? Check out the new default planes like the Baron, Kingair, 747, etc to see what 3D cockpits look like. You can see other examples of images taken in 3D cockpit mode on our Saab project here: http://forums.x-pilo...cember-10-2012/

(Really, the Laminar guys should just take a look at FlightGear, and the kind of cockpits they did. Terrain in Flightgear looks like crap, which on the contrary is good in XPlane 10. So I guess the two sims should just learn from each other.)

You surely must be using an aircraft not intended to have a 3D cockpit then.

Is there any plugin that might help me get a "better view"? It would be awesome to get a proportional shifting view control (ie. the joystick controls the movement of the viewport, not the viewport itself - push it up a little, view shifts upward slowly, push it up a lot, view shifts upward fast).

You can certainly assign this type of stuff already using the button advanced section of the joystick. It's a matter of finding the datarefs you want to assign to buttons. Otherwise, just use the keyboard. Use '<' for moving backwards, '>' to move forward, use either with shift held down and this will produce faster movement. Do this in 3D cockpit mode (Shift 9) or in exterior (Shift 4) mode. Again, use 'q' or 'e' in the 3D cockpit mode to "walk" right or left.

Also, since 3d cockpit doesn't look usable, at least not in the Cessna 172, it would be nice to be able to look around in 2d mode. In Flightgear, the panel just disappears if you look in some other direction except straight ahead. That would be fine...

As said, already exists. Use 'q' or 'e'.

Also, any plugin or tool that is generally known to improve user friendliness would be welcome. The UI of XPlane 10 has been exceptionally unwelcoming so far...

It's a new platform for you and you're just going to need a little time to warm up to it. It's not unlike a lot else, and with flight sims you take what you can get.

OK .. I'm announcing formally that I won't be buying ANY planes, addons, plugins or scenery until I get hold of this aircraft.

Lies. All lies! :)

#52973 Gizmo 64bit beta

Posted by Cameron on 28 April 2013 - 10:53 AM

So, I'm missing part of the Gizmo picture. I've been digging around and as far as I can gather it's a licensed product that one needs to purchase to use in development...? (I can't actually see it being sold anywhere) So I'm guessing it's not suitable for freeware development? I am/was a little confused because the H500 thing is GPL, and the plugin is a free download, as is the H500D. Then I realised there is the Ben Russell link, which would account for this. What is the actual process for using Gizmo? Development, distribution etc?

We'll get more into licensing as the time comes for it, but I'll clear up a few of your questions...

1. Gizmo is not currently sold anywhere

2. It's primarily been used up to this point in some aircraft sold at X-Aviation (Saab, C400, MU-2, etc), and now IXEG is also using it on the 737.

3. When this beta period is over for Gizmo 13 there will be three levels of licensing options. One of those levels allows for freeware developers to develop and distribute at no charge.

So, to answer your question in a sentence: Yes, Gizmo is perfectly suitable for freeware development!

#52850 Gizmo 64bit beta

Posted by Cameron on 26 April 2013 - 03:17 AM

Having just upgraded to 10.21rc2 I thought I would give the Gizmo 64bit beta a try.

I just moved the old 32 bit Gizmo plugin out and moved the new file in it's place.

I start XP and it loads fine but no plugins are loading. I reverted to the 32 bit plugin and all was fine again. I have attached my Log.txt.

I am on Win8 64bit.

Thanks

Simon

Hi Simon,

Your log shows you are missing a DLL file. When I get a little more time in a bit I will PM you and help you figure out what is missing.

#52520 Gizmo 64bit beta

Thanks for the thorough info, Kris, and for taking the time to further test against other products! It's very much appreciated! :)

#52474 Gizmo 64bit beta

Posted by Cameron on 20 April 2013 - 12:19 PM

Hi, All,

To further elaborate on Ben's original posting here, we are seeking general feedback and issues you see with Gizmo installed in your X-Plane/resources/plugins folder.

Please note that this version of Gizmo will NOT run any X-Aviation add-ons, but will run any scripts someone makes. Even if you do not have products that currently use Gizmo, we would highly appreciate your participation in testing this out. We want to know of any sound clashes you see, if you have any issues when running SASL driven aircraft (777, Carenado, etc), and any performance or crashing issues you may see, if any.

Thanks all for taking the time to download, install, and check this out!

If you are an X-Aviation customer and have our products currently installed:

Please go into your X-Plane/resources/plugins folder and temporarily remove your current gizmo.plugin folder prior to installing this new one. This will allow you to replace your old Gizmo folder back when you want to run X-Aviation products in 32-bit again!

#52165 What did you fly today?

Posted by Cameron on 14 April 2013 - 04:42 PM

No I was banned from here mostly because of my virtual airline

No, you were banned here for your rude attitude and constant cussing. Your virtual airline never had anything to do with it. Enough.
