Nano Posted January 2, 2017 Report Share Posted January 2, 2017 It's a small Ram Air Turbine (known as a RAT) used in the event of a dual engine failure. It provides electricity to the emergency bus and has a small hydraulic pump for gear and flight controls. Usually deploys automatically given certain criteria, but can be deployed manually for ops checks. I have deployed one in real life for an ops check and it makes a heck of a loud racket.
